Cleaver for balanced
Cane for CC and looking fancy as fuck

You'll come across more weapons throughout the game, and basically every single one is viable in its damage output.
Axe is more strength based.
Cane is more dexterity based.
Cleaver is balanced between the two.

cleaver does more damage to beasts so it might help you more against early bosses. youll be able to buy all 3 of them if you find the right item so its not too big of a deal

I like the Axe as a starter because its charged two-handed attack can be used to cheese some enemies (though it leaves you vulnerable). The Cane has better scaling than the other two (meaning it gets more benefit when you level up Dexterity than the Axe does when you level Strength) and looks the coolest. The Cleaver is the worst of the three imo.

I will always recommend the Saw Cleaver. I hated the ax, and Saw Cleaver gives a damage bonus to beasts (which you fight a lot).

Can't go wrong with either gun though. Pistol is easier to parry with, but Blunderbuss makes parrying safer.

I thought the cleaver was the lamest until i actually used it. Its attack damage might not be as impressive as the other two but it does extra damage to beasts (which you'll encounter a lot of early in the game) and has a really slick moveset. It's nothing to be sneezed at.

Seriously you rarely have to transform it, you can r1 spam everything. Equivalent of straight swords in Dark Souls

Yeah, Cleaver is one of the few weapons to have this bonus, which is not explained well in the game. You get a 20% damage bonus to beast-type enemies. What are beasts? Basically, any enemy with lots of fur or feathers, like the werewolf you first encountered.

Parrying will take some getting used to. It isn't necessary at all and I myself didn't really do much of it my first time through the game. It can be really helpful though, and if you can get good at it you'll make the midgame significantly easier on yourself.

Saw Cleaver's my favorite of the starting weapons, but Hunter's Axe is very close behind. I always choose the Axe, though, since the first weapon you will likely find in-game is basically the same thing as the Cleaver, so it's kinda redundant.

Every enemy and boss are beatable without parrying. Does ignoring half of your abilities make the game harder than it needs to be? Sure. But if a player doesn't care to utilize it in their play style, then it's not like the game forces you to change how you play.

I was exclusively Cane for my first run. I wanted a Bloodtinge character for my second, so I tried to get the Chikage as early as possible, and LAWDY LAWD what a nightmare that was. Super fun once I actually got it, though.

minor update
rekilled the wolf, fought some blokes, found the first... not bonfire
then stupidly went after the big axe guy and lost my souls
started picking off some mob blokes one by one after that, but they got wise on me and ganged up on me
narrowly escaped and regrouped with almost as much souls as I had when I died the first time

and met Gehrman as well, I trust him completely
(I already know a lot plotpoints)

there isnt much to save echoes for at this point is there?

If you explore like a good little boy, you can find an item that will let you level up before fighting a boss

Since it's unlikely you'll know which item that is even if you stumble upon it, it's called a hunter's mark.

Okay I can get past the first mob, if I take it methodically
but then there's an area with a big guy banging on the door and I am not sure how to proceed without alerting him
Or am I supposed to sneak attack him?

Remember this advice and give it to yourself whenever you feel overwhelmed.

The big guy banging on the door won't notice you if you walk up to him slowly. If you fully charge up a strong attack and hit an enemy in the back, you can visceral attack them for big damage afterwards.

Edit: I may be thinking about a different big guy by a door. What kind of weapon does he have?

You can do either tbh, there's a big enough space around to avoid him. Just a heads up though if you do that, he'll eventually cycle around up to the next area.

Ah, I had that backwards. Hunter's Mark is the Darksign.

And I'm pretty sure the big guy he's talking about in particular will always notice you at a certain distance. The game "cheats" with that one.
