I will sometimes go see a movie I wouldn't have otherwise based on a RT score, but only if it's 90% or more

if it was a movie I wanted to see anyway, any RT score is unlikely to dissuade me unless it's like less than 10%, but I don't watch a lot of movies so it's really rare that I want to see an especially bad one

What about these poorly panned movies that still do gangbusters?

There is so much fallacy in their complaints it's ridiculous. However, paid reviewers are mostly trash and I'd actually be fine with having them be ruined.

But then what would happen is that they would just pay off other people who do reviews like on Youtube. Wasn't there one YouTuber that was paid to give a glowing review about the new Ghostbusters?

Every movie critic I've ever had the misfortune of reading or listening to is enormously arrogant. They expect every movie to be this insanely deep Oscar-winning piece. The quicker that job dies, the better.

Hey now, if it's getting 30%, you could still like it.

There's just a strong chance it might not be for you.

A 98% has a pretty good chance of being something worthy of your time, but there's still a margin that allows for you to not like it!

Captain Underpants books were brilliant when I was a kid. And it looks like they've got the visual style down, at least.

captain underpants was a fun movie

very imaginative, stayed pretty true to the nature of the books. would recommend.

Over the weekend, I heard that some studio insiders want to hold off critic screenings until opening day or cancel them all together (that’s pretty ambitious and would cause much ire, we’ll see if that ever happens).

Speaking as a journalist, this line here is really sloppy journalism and actually doesn't mean anything at all. Doesn't seem like anyone in the topic is taking it too seriously though, so that's good!

Alternatively i can start demanding compensation for sharing my opinions.

Criticism had a role in the pre internet world where getting information on a given topic was actually difficult and required someone to invest actual specialized effort into it.

That just isnt the world we live in anymore.

This shift has already happened in gaming.

And if you think people who are actual journalists have poor journalistic ethics, that's nothing compared to people who AREN'T journalists but nevertheless end up playing that role.

Only if your writing/critiquing skills were actually marketable.

Like I can demand compensation for any number of things I already do that are careers for other people, doesn't mean I'll get it.

But then, as the success of sites like RottenTomatoes proves, people still don't WANT to actually look for that information. "Give me the aggregate!" they cry.

Frankly, I think both amateur critics and professional ones have different issues plaguing them. But at least with amateur Youtube critics, they're forced to be up front if they were paid to give coverage now. I just find professional critics are too bogged down by many factors that causes them to be more untrustworthy at their jobs, and I hate the idea of movies having to live or die by Rotten Tomatoes scores (similar to how video games live or die by Metacritic scores).

I think you get a more honest review out of an amateur critic at this point just talking on Youtube. And it's much easier to gauge their validity because unlike professional critics, they aren't writing down the same buzz words in their reviews that makes a lot of them just sound the same. With Youtubers, you can actually hear them talking and discussing their points like any person would (often with examples in the movies that professional articles tend to lack) and it's easier to tell if they're full of it.

That's the way I see it, at least.

You do realise that film writing, criticism and critique are not just giving an opinion right? I mean, they can be, but if you work for a publication you're going to do a lot more than that.

If youre George RR Martin and you want to savage the ending of Battlestar Galactica then yeah write your critique and I'll read it and someone should maybe even pay you for it.

But if youre Joe Jerkoff whose only notable feature is that you consume a lot of media, then no you shouldnt be a professional critic.
