It seems like it has gained popularity in recent years, yet 90% roguelites that release on the market are complete garbage.

90% of everything is garbage. Roguelites are still awesome, though I don't really keep up with many.

I've had my fill of Spelunky and Risk of Rain. FTL and Rogue Legacy were a little disappointing. Binding of Isaac still gets fired up on occasion (Antibirth>Afterbirth+ muahaha) though.

Any good ones I'm missing? Iirc Janway is the guru of roguelites.

Risk of Rain and FTL are great fun but the randomness can get frustrating at times when you do everything right but then something goes wrong and all your time was for naught.

You missed my favorite rogue lite to date- Enter the Gungeon. By far the most well optimized, beautiful, deep, and fun roguelite I've played.

None of these are really good though. Rimworld was OK but it can get very boring quickly. Also not an intuitive game, at all.

I never found them that interesting. Playing the same thing over and over again to grind to the eventual end-game never appealed to me. Part of the reason I hate MMO's as well.

Darkest Dungeon,Don't Starve and Rogue Legacy are neat imo.

I want to like Dragon Fin Soup,but damn that one has so many problems.

This is one of the many issues-- they also lack any sort of meaningful gameplay, progression, and often seem more like lazy pet projects than fully fleshed out games. It's a shame too-- it's definitely one of the coolest genres in video gaming imo.

Aside from the ones mentioned, I also like Death Road to Canada, Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Nuclear Throne.
Dead Cells is looking to be very good as well.

It's funny, I'm super ambivalent about all of the ones you've mentioned. They each have potential but they're not quite enjoyable for me. Death Road I enjoyed the most from them, but it lacks depth and the RNG gets ridiculous sometimes. Nuclear Throne gets talked about a lot but I gave it one chance and didn't like it much. It felt like a downgrade compared to enter the gungeon. Dead Cells has shown improvement but it's still kind of stale to play. I dislike the whole music theme of CotD.

What did you play for it like two minutes? noobs first run with that game barely gets you past the first level I imagine

No thats untrue, and its a game that definitely breaks new ground with its release, combat is fluid and music is great, rpg mechanics are great, enemy diversity is stellar, whats not to like about it?

I forget now, I think I played it for an hour or so-- I may try it again but the animations weren't smooth and the gameplay was so-so IIRC. Enter the Gungeon has spoiled me-- most of these games don't really come close to it.

I unlocked like two characters but I have to say that this game has practically no depth. I got to the nuclear throne and got killed by the cheap beam because I had no idea what was going on. This is definitely not on the same level as Gungeon IMHO

the depth is in the character perks/abilities/guns combos

like running a melee only build with eyes and use telekinesis to pull in your enemies and wackem
(has bullet deflection and with long arms you can melee people through walls).

Dual Crossbow build is amazing with Steroid and ability homing bolt

Melting has great kamikaze ability with Mutation boiling veins and can blow so many people up even offscreen especially when paired Impact Wrists and Throne butt

I got to it on my 3rd or 4th try, it wasn't too hard with the shield character.

What you call depth is just what I call empty randomness-- I'm talking about real content (more weapon variety, more character variety, more perk variety, more bosses, more maps, etc.).

The biggest sin of this game, in my opinion, is the fact that you can die in a split second to something very stupid-- it's punishing but not in a good way.
