Amen. I'm studying public policy for this very reason. It's about actual cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analyses, not inaccurate feels and misinformation.

Nobody's really changed, it's just that people that didn't feel comfortable voicing their views before are having them validated by a prominent public figure, and further validated by the fact that enough people agreed with him to vote him into office. That amounts to a pretty considerable confidence boost.

I don't know how accurate that is but it seems a lots of the media is making that claim. For a while after trump was elected anytime something racist happened they tried to blame it on the election. Hell there was so much going on during the election that they tried to spin to being racist it was just getting absurd to the point where people didn't know what an illegal immigrant even is.

It is and it isn't. It is actually good for everyone to get a chance like that to express their views, because otherwise they fester in secrecy until the opportunity arises to act on them. It's easy to forget that, say, there are still people who seriously think interracial marriage should be made illegal again, and if you pretend that opinion doesn't exist and shut down any attempt at discussing it, those holding it will be drawn to fringe extremist groups where they can feel validated. This way, the more harmful views are brought out into the open, allowing them to be identified and forcing proper discussion of them (even if they don't actually have any value, those holding them believe that they do, and that's a problem that can't be solved without engaging them).

A lot of these views are still very harmful, and given the power currently wielded by the Republican party it's going to be necessary to fight tooth and nail to keep them from causing harm, but this is still necessary to moderate the citizenry's views. That goes both ways, too. When nobody feels comfortable expressing one side, the other side feels reinforced by the illusion that there's no opposition. Echo chambers don't benefit anyone either.
