The current "religious liberty" debate in some states now is fasinating because it's two core American values, the right to exercise ones religious beliefs freely and the right to not be discriminated against, in direct opposition to one another. I'm a little tired of dealing with immigrants who have been here for years without even attempting to learn english. I just view it as a rudeness thing. Free college/housing/health care just make financial sense to me. college- more people getting trained for higher waged jobs have more money to spend and more scientists and engineers help advance our technology. housing- taking homeless people off the street saves tax payer money in the long run as the homeless who get them tend to be sick less, more likely to recover from drug addiction, and more likely to get a job health- Public insurance companies before obama care spent less than 50 cents on the dollar on healthcare and the rest on salaries and expansion. medicare spends like 90 cents on the dollar for healthcare and the rest on upkeep. Countries with centralized health care also have the ability to negotiate with drug manufacturers for cheaper drugs, so overall the public is spending a lot less on healthcare. Food- I've worked in retail, I have seen the abuse of food stamps, but I also don't think a nation can just let its people go hungry either. --- I am awesome and so are you. Nobody's really changed, it's just that people that didn't feel comfortable voicing their views before are having them validated by a prominent public figure, and further validated by the fact that enough people agreed with him to vote him into office. This way, the more harmful views are brought out into the open, allowing them to be identified and forcing proper discussion of them (even if they don't actually have any value, those holding them believe that they do, and that's a problem that can't be solved without engaging them). A lot of these views are still very harmful, and given the power currently wielded by the Republican party it's going to be necessary to fight tooth and nail to keep them from causing harm, but this is still necessary to moderate the citizenry's views. That goes both ways, too. When nobody feels comfortable expressing one side, the other side feels reinforced by the illusion that there's no opposition. Echo chambers don't benefit anyone either. I agree Adjl. While I enjoy all my LGBT allies I do feel trying to silence the opposition is not the best way to go about it. People have been a little too aggressive about shutting down these people without actually trying to encourage an open mind. everyone erroneously thought racism and homophobia was a thing of the past. Then BAM we got smacked in the face by our complacency. Also, everyone is entitled to their own shitty opinions so let them speak. --- I love people. If you are gay you should see that voting Republican isn't going you be the best way to get gay marriage legal in all 50 states. At the same time people should remember that Trump had a LGBT flag at one of his rallys and isn't against Gay marriage. His Vice president however thinks it is disgusting and should be against the law, as does the majority of the party. What I'm saying is people need to realize that over 62 million people voted for Trump and not all of those 62 million people are sexist, hate gay people, or are Nazis. But it still amazes me that after this election the people on the left have stayed to their Colbert, and CNN, and WaPos. And the right has stayed with Fox and Friends, and Breitbart. No one is willing to have a discussion because it results in name calling, and "I'm right you're wrong" type of reasoning.
