Whenever people ask about why I like wrestling, I just explain that it's just a performance art. They're acting and telling a story in the ring, like a big movie fight scene.

I don't know if there are any Rooster Teeth/Funhaus fans here but they recently released a one hour documentary about two of the Funhaus guys doing a week long crash course so that one of them could fulfill a long time dream of competing in a real match.

I really enjoyed it and it definitely showed how tough and physical wrestling can be.

Also they get training from Johnny Mundo at one point. Who has a wrestling ring in his backyard.

I think you have to be a FIRST member to watch it but there are always free trials going if that is all you are interested in. Its called Haus of Pain.

Yeah there are plenty of people who are reasonable about it and that's generally the kinda explanation I give as well if I'm asked. It's nice because it automatically answers the supplemental "why don't you watch UFC instead" question.

But yeah it's so widespread that pretty much every wrestling fan has met a condescending douche in their life, so if you see or hear a comment that leans douchey on first inspection then it's natural to lash out at that person while having no real insecurities about wrestling to speak of.

Oh, it also helps to say that you have to accept it's really dumb. Which, let's be real, you can't take this shit that seriously. Like, we have conversations and stuff and we get heated about how they book this stuff, but most of the stuff we really like is totally dumb. Like New Day? Breezango? Dean Ambrose? Y2KO? That stuff was all really dumb. Even Braun Strowman is so dumb! But that's wrestling! It's a bunch of dumb stuff they put together to make an entertaining show.

I will say given the right cast of wrestlers and the right writing wrestling has in the past been less dumb than Twilight. The difference nowadays is Twilight at least has a reasonable amount of consistency and continuity despite the ideas being ridiculous and the acting generally being mid-tier wrestling level which gives it some marks from me.

American Wrestling at minimum is dumb. WWE, ROH, TNA, CHIKARA, Lucha-- all are dumb for varying reasons. Some being less desirable reasons than others.

Actually I've seen enough Mexican wrestling to know that's dumb too. As are a lot of Japanese feds. DDT probably has the highest concentration of absurdity I've seen in wrestling and I've seen like two shows. Not to say it's all comedy feds either-- Oz Academy, man, what the hell.

NJPW is probably the best at not being dumb but I'm sure with more familiarity there are things to be found there too. And no Yano doesn't actually count.

Not always a bad thing to be dumb. WWE is usually dumb for the wrong reasons lately, but with stuff like Strowman it's absolutely the right reason. Stuff like the House of Horrors or Miz winning a match by way of his opposition randomly getting destroyed and luck not being a superpower of his, not so much.

Anyway yeah I think it's kinda impossible to take wrestling seriously moreso than things like movies, books, TV, even video games. It's just a combination of the presentation and the content.

Japanese non-comedy feds are the closest to having it right in that it feels more like a sporting event. Early nWo era WCW was surprisingly solid at this too. Even then some of the gimmicks or matches put together are kinda absurd. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing as I like absurdity, but it's a limitation of the genre as I've seen it I guess. I feel like Lucha Underground could've done it if they were a bit lighter on the supernatural elements mixing so willy nilly with the ones grounded in reality, but again I'm not sure that would actually make it better.

I used to be so high on Sasha Banks. Then it was like they were trying to ruin her. The feud with Charlotte just soured me on her so much. I still like her but its nowhere near as much as I used to.

Did Emma just get herself set up wrong, or was she not given enough time to get safely set up for that? At least Sasha didn't end up landing on her own head somehow, I know she has a knack for that.

Yeah, pretty much. Sasha missed when putting her in the corner and either should have corrected it or waited, but she kept going and did the move, so Emma didn't have time to correct it.

Not sure if she wasn't paying attention or what.

But I was always right about Damien Sandow, which more than makes up for any of that.

Also, Sasha's issue is that she moves too fast and doesn't think. That's why she always botches. She doesn't take her time on spots where she needs to.

Definitely do not take that as an endorsement of other fanbases though. There are plenty of insecure people who need to defend their hobbies because their self-identity leans heavily on what media they consume.

I'm not sure why anyone would take the double knees spot anyway. It's a short drop to be sure, but you fold yourself up against tight ass ropes. As Emma found out, there's not much room for error. Aside from the whole, "My legs and knees are bent as fuck," even Del Rio's finisher seems safer.

Also the worst part about that stupid knee spot is it doesn't even look good when it's not injuring someone. Overly contrived spots like that are no good.

Spoilers for RAW.

* before the match starts, Braun grabs a mic and says Dean can shove it and he isn't accepting this match because he's injured thanks to Roman Reigns (his arm is actually in a sling.) Kalisto rushes Braun as the bell rings and Braun destroys him. Roman's music hits and he makes his way out. Roman is being booed out of the building btw. Roman gets the upper hand and hits 3 Superman Punches to take Braun to the outside. Braun then kicks a rushing Reigns and attacks him. Roman regains the upper hand and attacks the injured arm of Strowman wrapping it around the post multiple times. LOUD dueling Roman chants as he takes a chair to Strowman. Braun finally retreats through the crowd.

Roman Reigns is seriously the most obnoxious character.
