At the time it seemed like Playstation was doing bigger things but looking back, it's so inferior to Nintendo 64.

The N64 had awesome first party games but the Ps1 had more third party titles that interested me.

It's hard to choose for me but I'd have to give it to the Playstation.

I wouldn't say 10, I'd say atleast 20 classic titles, just off the top of my head.

But PlayStation had like 40-60 classics easily

N64 was one of Nintendo's worst systems, the only home console I might rate lower than it is Wii, and...no, I wouldn't. N64 was bad. Literally "the only Nintendo home console I never bought for my own home" bad.

PS1 meanwhile is Sony's 2nd best console, and there's no shame in being 2nd place to the PS2.

It was no contest then, it remains no contest.

My favorite PS1 games: Suikoden 1, Suikoden 2, The Legend of Dragoon, Command & Conquer Red Alert Retaliation, Eretzvaju, and Wild 9.

My favorite N64 games: Smash Brothers and...that's it, really.... OoT and Majora's Mask were ok, but if I include games I found just "ok," the PS1 list would grow a lot more.

The thing with the N64 is if you don't like 3d platformers, well then you are pretty much shit out of luck. With the PS1 though, there are still a ton of great games even if you don't like 3d platformers or JRPGs. Even the Sega Saturn had more variety then the N64.

Or yea, and if you LIKE JRPGs, then you aren't going to find anything on the N64.

The ps1 had more software, but the N64 had better hardware. The ps1 had massive loadtimes, the graphics are so bad on some games that they're nearly unplayable (although part of that could be trying to play some of the games on my ps3), and the controller would fuck up your hand on fighting games. I tore open my thumb so many times trying to play X-Men vs Street Fighter which, by the way, was a terrible port.

The N64 was also amazing at the time for multiplayer. Played so much 3p and 4p Smash, Goldeneye, Cruis'n USA/World, Mario Kart, Turok, etc. I think the ps1 had an attachment for some 4p stuff, but it wasn't the same.

Second best selling fighting game franchise next to Street Fighter, sounds like a good game to leadoff with.

I also like how you don't even try to mention any N64 multiplayer games because other then GoldenEye THEY ALL SUCK.

That's not really true. The N64 had a ton of non-3D platformers, including a lot of racing games, sports games, shooters, puzzle games, and well, pretty much everything you'd expect on any console. The JRPG selection was smaller than the ps1 although... eh. The first RPG to jump to mind for the N64 is always the so-so Quest 64.

Because apparently multiplayer only involves a modem now? It's like the N64 natively supported 4p local or anything and was pretty much known for being a group-play console.

My own list for both systems:

PS:
Symphony of the Night
Suikoden
Final Fantasy Games (including tactics)
Xenogears
Chrono Chross
Mega Man X series (the later ones, which are inferior to the SNES ones but still great games)

N64:
Perfect Dark
Majoras Mask
Star Fox
Smash Bros
Jet Force Gemini (my friends hated this game. Whatever, I loved it)
Paper Mario

My problem with PS1, overall, was that there were so, so many games and if you go to the store and pick a random one that sells a bunch, you are likely to get a Crash Bandicoot or Spyro game (or a knockoff like Gex) and it's going to suck. I'd get so many games for my PS as gifts and they while the good ones were very good, there were so, so many that were not.

For me, N64 was more consistent. If I had only been able to have had one (I had both) it'd be the N64.

Numerous other people listed other N64 multiplayer games, most of which were great. Even the so-so ones like the Pokemon Stadiums were fun between Magikarp Splash, etc.

The problem with the ps1 is that not only did it not natively support 4p play, but a lot of games couldn't support it anyway. And only having 2p play at a time is kinda lame except for fighters.

Wow, there's so much rampant fanboyism in this topic. Even more than usual.

Personally I prefer the N64 as it has some of my favorite games of all time, but the PS1 also has some pretty great stuff. PS1 has amazing RPGs and the N64 has amazing collectathons. I can go back to games from both quite a bit, like Castlevania: SotN and Banjo. Many games from both have't aged well, but some from both did. I generally prefer the ones on the N64, but I can see why other would pick PS1.

I voted PS, but really, most or all of the games that I assume are better than N64 games I haven't even played. N64 is definitely clunkier, though.

favorite N64 games include:
Blast Corps
Body Harvest
DK64
Doom 64
F-Zero
Goldeneye I guess
JFG
KI:G
OoT
Pilotwings 64
SM64 I guess
Mario Kart I guess
Star Fox I guess (not really)
Space Station Silicon Valley
Tetrisphere
Wave Race
Top Gear Rally
Turok games

great thing about N64 was that it was actually experimenting with what you could do in 3D. the games were simple and clunky but often pretty innovative. way more innovative than what motion controls gave us.

favorite PS games include:
Crash Bandicoot 1 and 2
FFT
maybe Harvest Moon
FF7 and 9 I guess

Why Spyro isn't idolized up there with Banjo I don't know.

Spyro was way better than Crash or Banjo Kazooie. It looked better and felt more polished than SM64 (though at the time it SM64 did seem better).

There's so much "stuff" to do in the last two games, they were also probably the two best looking games on the ps1 or n64.

The only reason I can think of (that people don't oggle it as much) is that Spyro was a game that should have been on the N64, where all the kids were. Ugh, but then the textures would look horrible. Every game on the N64 looks horrible with those crazily compressed textures.

PS1 is much, much better. N64's controller is terrible, and it's hardly got any games. On top of that, most of what it does have has been made obsolete by later entries in the series. The PS1 library as a whole hasn't aged that well either, but there's a lot more to choose from there and it's got a lot of solid RPGs that have withstood the test of time pretty well.
