Maybe they should just stop selling more seats than they have available.

If they undersell, they can accept standby passengers.

Problem solved.

Couldn't giving too much have a negative effect as well? As the flight attendants raises the "bid" I can imagine some customers almost fighting for the extra money. Imagine if some passengers purposely wait on accepting the amount until the compensation reaches something they're satisfied with.

Waiting until the price goes up enough to make it worth taking the money is the whole point. Nobody is going to fight anyone.

My apology, I misspoke. I meant purposely waiting as in they're already fine with X amount but are intentionally forestalling the acceptance just to get more money outta it. Though I guess if said passenger gets too greedy and keeps stalling someone is bound to accept the amount before them.

Touche. Not everyone is gonna want to be delayed on their travels and I can only guess it will be first come first serve.

That offer would be to entice people to volunteer. If you wait for the compensation to reach a higher value, you risk having somebody else cash in earlier and rob you of your chance entirely.

So you risk... what exactly? Getting to your destination without interruption? The horror!

Well, yeah. Worst case scenario, you've lost nothing. If you're willing to take compensation instead of flying as expected, though, holding out for better compensation presents the risk that somebody else will take a lower price and you'll miss that opportunity. My point is that the nature of that gamble will keep compensation amounts from escalating too high in most cases.

It'd be cheaper to just hold 4 seats like the airline I use generally does. But, most of these companies aren't in it for the money.
