Also crosses showing up in the various early games, the bible being an item in the original(hilariously changed to "Spell Book" in the NA version), etc.

I don't doubt that it was influenced by it in some ways, the crosses on the NES Zelda shields attested to that.

The thing is, it was never relevant, and outside of this thread I've never seen it discussed in my life.

Be honest here, do you really care about this topic?

I'll give you my honest opinion. I don't like real-life religions directly placed in fantasy settings, since it makes no sense at all. Indirect references to it are fine, in fact excellent when done well (see Lord of the Rings, for instance); but Zelda is nowhere near deep enough for that -- it's a great game, not a philosophical wonder.

As far as I am concerned, it was never directly implied, let alone stated, so it never truly had Christianity in it to begin with. The closest reference was the Sanctuary in Link to the Past, which wasn't even called a "Church". It just was themed after one.

Pretty much how I see it, too. I think the idea is quite a stretch, despite slight references early in the series.

And some large group of non-christians claiming to be protectors of feelings, along with a small minority of Christians would no doubt cry about it.

Eh, nothing I'd really call strong evidence that they intended to use Christianity. Obviously that's where they got the crosses from, but it could have just been the game depicting its own stand-in for Christianity that wasn't meant to be the same as real-world Christianity. The use of "Bible" could just be a weird literal translation of Japanese, and the word "Bible" is sometimes used for books besides the Holy Bible anyway.

The biggest piece of evidence is that artwork, but official artwork back in those days often had inaccuracies and stretched the interpretation of how Link is supposed to look.

I think I'd hate the series if they kept it, because they'd expand on it like they did with the story they chose.

A lot of it sounds like silly speculation. Japan is big on secular appropriation of iconography and, within the games themselves, no mention is made to any religion. The alleged crucifix is really the only major arguing point and I don't remember seeing that anywhere.

More importantly, the *same game* that supposedly presents the best evidence for this argument is also the one that has a completely alternative take on religion since it introduces the idea of the sacred realm.

This, pretty much. For a so-called atheist, Carl is pretty obsessed with Christianity.

Plus it's historical and similar to a lot of other works of fantasy where a downward sword is used as a cross proxy. In the case of shields, a lot of people will draw them with crosses without even knowing that the symbol was meant to be a Christian cross; instead, they just saw it was on the shield.

Whoops, my bad. "Bibliotheca" is Latin for library or a collection of books (including an anthology, apparently, when you look at the Bible). Latin words for a book include "liber" and "codex." <_<

Sorry guys, but your argument doesn't hold up.

http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/zelda/images/2/2a/Book_of_Magic.png/revision/latest?cb=20091022144725

Very clearly a bible and not some random book. Unless you really want to argue that it's just some normal book that happens to have a cross on it, but you're not that stupid.

Checkmate, atheists. Do your research next time.
