So I had to work on a car who belongs to this guy who said his transmission locked up. We get the car towed in, and I start looking at the trans. Mind you this car has 45k on the odometer. Right away I could tell it was the brakes. They were metal on metal for a while and they welded to the rotors. The guy refused to believe me and claims it should be covered by warranty.

How did they become metal on metal? Too much metal?

Seconded. I'd admit, I didn't enjoy working on our family car with my dad as a kid but years later I'm glad he taught me what he knew. It baffles me something as simple as switching out a flat tire for the spare is beyond the capability of some people.

I know with roadside assistance certain knowledge is probably not necessary but I'd rather spend the 15-20 minutes getting my hands dirty and doing it myself than waiting 40+ minutes for a professional to arrive and do it for me.

Though I have had my idiotic moments as well. There was a week where my engine randomly had trouble starting and I just couldn't figure out what it was. Called AAA one time only to find out the connection to the battery was loose. Of all the things I looked at I failed to make sure the connection was secure. I apologized to the AAA tech for wasting his time.

It was an elective at my high school but for real. Maybe they should make that a part of Home Ec and be like "Don't put diesel in your car. Make sure you check the oil every once in a while for gods sake"

I work on my motorcycle but I refuse to get under my car for fear of it coming off the jacks and crushing me to death. Basically I'm just a pussy.

Hah. This does cross my mind each time I get under my Subaru WRX to change the oil. Though with my Subaru Outback the rise might be high enough for me to slide under without lifting it.

He ended up needing 2 rotors, all front pads and calipers. They were fucked. I got paid for 4 hours of labor and it took me about 2 and a half.

I would say to buy some ramps, use your e brake, and chalk (chock?) all wheels. And for gods sake, don't do it on the side of the road if you can help it. If you must, find some orange cones and put as many as possible around you amd your car.

You should have overhauled his muffler bearings with that extra hour and a half.
