There is no rule for this

The rule is for passengers who haven't boarded yet.

No way it's random. They're not going to forcibly remove a first class passenger or a child, for example. I'd love to see what criteria they follow, as it's bound to be insightful.

Yeah I don't necessarily think it's random either. If what they're claiming about using a computer is correct, they probably install some algorithm to decide who should get the boot. Though I don't think they'll ever reveal the process in how they do it because it's probably something really stupid.

- No first class
- Then you go down the frequent flyer totem pole, e.g. no platinum travelers, if possible no gold travelers, no silver travelers, etc.
- No unaccompained minors.

After that all bets are off. Usually they pick the elderly and minorities, so that's suspect.

When they mentioned the computer, I thought of the employee just using a computer to scan through passengers' info to reveal which ones were travelling alone, which ones paid the least due to redeemed miles, and things like that. I'd be really surprised if there is any algorithm in place. I've worked for large organizations before and sometimes (Ok, many times) decision making for sticky situations involve some vague policy and is discretionary on the part of the employee. I don't know if it's done that way because it's hard to anticipate all potential scenarios or if it's because the organization wants to be able to blame the employee when things go wrong.

I've flown in Australia lots of times (most flights are full) and I've never heard of this overbooking thing. Maybe it's different because the fare restrictions on these are quite strict and you need to pay more to have the right to cancel with a full refund.

Hey guys, let's have some fun!

Do you think my biggest fan here would be willing to take an account bet?

- If I am able to post proof that I held a high airline status (e.g. gold, platinum, diamond, etc) at some point, he has to close his account.
- If I can't post proof, I will close my account.

I'd obviously edit out my account # and name, since he'd use it to harass me in real life, but I could post a picture of the status card, perhaps with a nice note like "close you account now :3 , 4/10/2017"

Will he take on the best? Would he welch once again? ;) :)

It's just an entertaining thought, he probably won't take the bet LOL

I got a bit worried when I saw the video where he was running around back and forth, bleeding, saying out loud "I have to get home, I have to get home". It seems he suffered a concussion or meltdown after he suffered that impact that made him bleed :(

And the whole "we offered people money" is bullshit.

I once gave up my seat for $1100, but it was a travel voucher, and had to be used in the next 6 months. They count on you coming off a vacation, can't use more time in the next half year, so it expires.

But, united can go fuck itself. I flew them a couple times, and it was a nightmare each time. Delta is leaps and bounds better.

I don't understand the concept of overbooking flights. Plus, I don't think they are legally allowed to remove people. They can say "If you give up your seat, you get $800 or a voucher." but treating the dude like a terrorist just because he didn't want to give up his seat.

They've pretty much already lost the lawsuit if he decides to sue their asses.

You wouldn't say the same thing if your mom was bloodied up and dragged away for doing nothing except stay in a flight that she paid money for. If you instigated something of course the person who didn't do anything wrong except live and breathe would act defensive. Plus that money he was being offered was like 1 cent to him. He's a rich doctor who had to see patients.

The main issue is that they cannot do that. If anything they'll end up sued badly. Hell, the CEO of United was like "Oh god, please don't sue us!" in his response.

The proper way for them to deal with this situation would have to offer him higher and higher prices for his seat, and if he didn't want to leave. Then they just move onto to somebody else.

"We at United Airlines reserve the right to beat the ever lovin shit out of you, if you do not decide to leave the plane."

I must have missed that part, also it's been pointed out. They don't offer the money/voucher when you are ON the plane seated. They do it outside of the plane before you are planning to board it. So they've already fucked up big time right there. Plus them forcing the guy out of his seat. Even the CEO of the company has apologized for it and said it wasn't how they handle business. So everything is pretty much leading up to them being sued for nearly a billion dollars or more.

Yes, CE's armchair lawyers have no idea what they're going on about.

An airline should never actually exercise this option because it's a PR disaster, but they absolutely can.

This is the reason they 99% of the time will usually do whole "Give up your seats for a voucher or credit" shit BEFORE you board the plane. Otherwise, they get situations like this. Which just opens them up to lawsuits a plenty. They can ask you leave, but once they started grabbing the guy and forcing him off like that. It essentially opened them up for a huge lawsuit.

ToS aren't legally binding. You can't put shit in fine print that says "by buying this plane ticket, we own your house and car."

Most contracts aren't actually legally binding. At the most the just sort of make it a bit more difficult to sue the company. But, in this case though. The Airline is not only clearly in the wrong, but so if the CEO. So, if anything. They will likely either settle and throw the Air Martial under the bus or the company that trained him.

I mean it's not uncommon to try to boot people while they're on the airplane, I had that experience when we were all seated and then they announced they were overbooked and started giving incentives after incentives to try to sway people to give up their seats. They manage to get 6 people and everyone was happy. What United did here was went full stupid and stopped giving incentives after $800's (which isn't really 800 dollars but a fucking voucher) and started the whole "computer is going to pick people to boot off this airplane" shit. I mean I'll admit I myself would've been pissed if they "randomly" chose me and/or my wife as well.

However with that said, United isn't in the wrong or doing anything illegal, but just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. This kind of crap is PR disaster and United handle it very poorly.
