When they mentioned the computer, I thought of the employee just using a computer to scan through passengers' info to reveal which ones were travelling alone, which ones paid the least due to redeemed miles, and things like that. I'd be really surprised if there is any algorithm in place. I've worked for large organizations before and sometimes (Ok, many times) decision making for sticky situations involve some vague policy and is discretionary on the part of the employee.
