There is no way in Hell that United would have "randomly" selected a child to be pulled off that flight, and then used law enforcement to literally remove the child. They expected people to volunteer to leave, but I suspect Plan B would have been to remove someone least likely to resist. United booked their flight in error, and are just waiting for this to blow over when everyone moves on to the next controversy.

Yeah.

But security are not known for their finesse and soft touch, and you're supposed to call security on rogue passengers who are clearly an issue. Heck, security was not called on this guy:

I believe we are. We're talking about the guy who was told he had to leave and refused and then was forced.

I've been bumped from and kicked off flights. I was never bloodied and always ended up at my destination quickly and usually with extra money or clothes or vouchers. You know why because I didn't break the law and resist.

I'm sure no one was trying hurt the guy but if you're resisting and struggling accidents happen. I'm 6'4'' 240 and have worked security at a hospital where forcibly removing people was a semi regular part of the job. It's not easy.

Now do I think it needed to come to this? No. With 99% of trespassers asking or threatening to call the cops works. I also normally called the cops over moving someone because fuck me getting hit for 20 an hour.

That said if I told you to leave or I'd help you out and you still didn't go then I moved them.

The man was trespassing and holding up everyone else and I understand them wanting him off quickly.

The policy sucks but legally they didn't do anything wrong.

Oh shit, that's one of my local McDonalds. It's extremely small and always packed. It's like a third of the size of regular ones. They really need to kick them out.

It's because Parsons and Northern is a huge intersection with lots of old people living right there wth several assisted living and rehab buildings nearby.

I just think they can't walk 4 blocks over to the huge Burger King or 3 more blocks for the other huge McDonalds.

unfortunately this is seen as a service

just like gamefaqs can ban you for whatever reason the airline can actually ask you to leave the plane

they own the plane just like CBSi owns gamefaqs
just like your ISP can cancel your service whenever for whatever reason

Yes. If the airline asks you to leave and you don't then it's trespassing. And don't make it seem like this was immediate. A flight attendant talked to him and he refused, the probably customer service, then security and when he had refused all of them they had security remove him and if he tripped or hit something resisting he brought it on himself.

I was similarly kicked off a flight. I went out talked to customer service and got on a direct flight, access to the United lounge, and they paid for a days clothing because our bags went with the original flight.

It was annoying and a shitty system but it's the rules. Guy should have just gone instead of being a prick.

The only reason they were nice to you is because they knew they couldn't get away with it, thanks to guys like that "prick" who don't take all shit. If flight attendants decided to start kicking out passengers for fun and passengers said "thanks, m'am :) " and shuffled happily like a jigglypuff to the gate and then went to customer service ALL THE TIME then airlines would not feel compelled to give them lounge access and all that good stuff.

You're painting a picture where a flight attendant could decide she doesn't like your face and ask you to get the fuck out (probably with those words) and you'd have to comply. Like you said, you have no rights. Their plane, their rules.

Theoretically you could be re-booked 10 times and the same flight attendant could kick you out of the plane 10 times for the lulz. You're a nobody, you got no rights. Good luck getting home 10 days later.

See, theoretically it could happen. This is why giving united push back is important. They're already not giving a shit, imagine how little they'd care if we'd all flutter like jigglypuffs to the gate every time we're told to fuck off.

I think you're arguing for he wrong thing here. What the airlines did was in their policy, they're allowed to kick people off the plane for whatever reason, it's in the terms of agreement when you go and paid the ticket. So yes CJ is right that the companies did nothing wrong.

However, there's a difference between having the right to do something and not doing it because it creates bad PR. In this case, they had the right to do it but we the people have every right to be pissed at Delta for doing a shit job at it. Like I said in my example, SWA also had to boot people off the plane but the way they handled it was much better than the way Delta handled it. SWA just kept piling on incentives after incentives to get people to volunteer. So yes, the way SWA handled it, it cost them a lot of money in the short run but the long term gain is good PR. Delta was able to handle it the short term, but in the long run they suffer from bad PR.

I mean, the rules exist, but they should be applied with common sense.

Ever heard those airport sound bytes that say "baggage is subject to inspection, damage and removal"? That's all they say, they play them all the time.

Imagine you're sitting at the gate and some airport guy says "I hate the Miami Dolphins and that is a dolphins bag" and proceeds to football kick the shit out of your bag, empty it in front of you and them dump it in the trash.

Technically, it's ok? I mean, it's baggage and Baggage is subject to damage and removal right? The recording and/or rules don't say "in very specific situations, for security reasons". But it's common sense.

Nobody could ever do any planning if they could truly get kicked out of their planes for random reasons all the time just because they have a funny face or whatnot

That point makes me want to know why exactly the airlines chose to remove the doctor. Was it based on his age, his sex or something like that? Of course United wouldn't outright admit to that, but a competent attorney would look into United's history and look for patterns that show discrimination or some other concern. I hope some media site continues to update this story.

you are using bad logic

a flight attendant would not get away with this

also to this guy getting kicked, it was not 1 flight attendant deciding this

a whole body of employees has to review this kind of thing, including the pilot

but to your illogical hyperbole, if the same flight attendant kicks you off multiple times for the lulz you can consult customer service or another flight attendant and you see it is as much their company as that other flight attendants and they wouldn't be happy about it

A) the reason they do this is because there are laws governing what airlines must do if you can't get on a flight. What they must refund what they must compensate etc.

B) there's also the loss of business. I've not flown with them after a few bad experiences. That said their rules and price point are obviously good enough that some still do. If people decided they didn't have a good enough service people wouldn't use them.

Due to weather I know it's been a cluster fuck the last week or so. We also don't know how it was handled. The guys a doctor. I think they should have moved on. Hell if they called for volunteers and said this guys a doctor and needs to be someplace I'd have volunteered my seat and I'm sure others would have too (depending on the circumstances, good chance he didn't need to be there).

That said if he had gotten off and talked to the desk they could have worked something out with him. Obviously you're not going to be flying when they tell you to get off. Working with them instead of refusing to leave would have worked out better for everyone.

It could have been handled much better but united was well within their rights.

Most of the American based airlines are shit. United is easily one of the worst.

Oddly Alaska Airlines is my least favorite. NEVER had a good experience.
Naturally post 9/11, all airline employees act like they have some kind of power.
So I use all my resources I have to make sure I have a connection when their flights get delayed.
However, it usually means my luggage makes it back to Seattle 12 hours after I'm at home.
Luckily they deliver it to your door eventually.

One time I ran to catch a connecting flight and had no belt on because I wanted to clear security faster.
It was comical as fuck. Running while pulling up my pants the whole way.

Flying is no fun at all.

For me it was to the defense of the employees there that are just doing their job and painted our like villains. They were following policy and I've said it's a shitty system.

nobody is defending this
it is important to explain falsities however

1. united didn't send their own cronies to beat up the man, it was airport employees (airport is city owned, not private company)
2. united reserves the right to remove people from planes, it is legal, and they aren't the only airline who does
3. all the big airlines overbook, even the fan favorite delta and people get kicked from them sometimes too

kicking the guy off wasn't a good thing, but lets not make up lies just because we dislike United
the issue here is they shouldn't have removed a person because their employees needed on a plane, customers should take priority (they even have a system to guarantee employees have seats so this was a big mess up)
and if the guy was selected at random because no one would give up seat in other overbooked scenario, if he is doctor to see patients they should redo the random lot

Oh that lmao. I didn't think much of it... I mean I get that people can get triggered by it but it's not like someone got dragged out of an airplane for no good reason at all.
