When they pulled him out of his seat they hit his head on the adjacent arm rest.

Yea he was knocked the fuck out. Probably the reason he seemed so disorientated when he got back on the plane saying that he needs to go home.

This airline however tried to cheap out on the problem and now has an incredible PR disaster on their hands. Whoever organised this f*** up needs to be out of a job.

Do you remember that United story where a girl was kicked off the plane for wearing yoga pants?

Lowly flight attendants and airline personnel are becoming judge, jury and executioner, it's insane.

Yes I do remember that story quite well. They have a policy for people riding for free or at a huge discount using employee benefits that requires professional attire and enforced that policy.

Oh I see you're upset that airlines have policies and are then calling flight attendants and other workers following policy lowly people. What a class act you are.

lowly in the totem pole of corporate authority, context is key. They're not law enforcement of judges, they shouldn't have the power to destroy somebody's life (e.g. somebody ends in Gitmo) because they haven't had their morning coffee.

United are a bunch of cheapskates. Throw more money. This is their fault not the customer. When no one accepted the $800 they needed to go $1000 no takers, $2000, no takers $3000. Plan B should not have been alright rough the guy up fellas and throw him off the plane.

It's in the agreement when you buy the ticket. I've been bumped off a united flight before. It sucks. I don't fly united anymore.

I was in a foreign country with little money left and freaking out. I talked to customer service and ended up with a free cab ride from Belfast to Dublin, a new flight and a 750 credit for the future. Thats how you handle it.

You don't refuse to leave (breaking the law). I've had jobs where Ive had to physically remove people from property and I hated doing it. If I didn't physically remove you I called the cops and hated getting someone in legal trouble even more.

Do they just randomly decide?

They had a computer basically do a RNG to decide the unlucky 4 who will be forced off the plane.

This reminds me of that time I was on an overbooked SWA flight to Florida, when no one volunteered to accept free over night lodging + next day flight + one free round trip USA ticket + $500. SWA kept raising the package deal, until the deal became too good to pass up. United could have done better, to make up for their over booking policy, which was at fault. Like yeah $800's and a hotel is fine and dandy, but it's just better PR to give better incentives.

Nobody ever said it was random. Just that a computer did it.

It seems likely that they only consulted the computer so that they could blame the computer for choosing who it did.

Though you would expect such, there's no guarantee that the computer chose at random. It could have picked the lowest weight passenger, the last to board, the one with the longest name, the one that has thr most "red flags" (as the company sees it), or just the first one in the list that is whatever demohraphic the programmer didn't like.

My first guess would be among the group that paid the least for their ticket, similar to how people who paid more are more likely to be upgraded to business class when they want to fill it up.

I seriously doubt their computer has a "select random passenger" function lol

But they are able to see a good amount of info about individual passengers, so my guess is he had a low tier seat and was not a frequent United customer.

They overbook because some people inevitably don't end up on the flight for whatever reason. If they booked the exact amount of seats they have they'd end up flying with empty seats

Ah yes.

But again, if you buy a ticket and don't show up, they get to keep your money. Sure, they might rebook you or whatever, but they will not give you any money back.

The passengers miss most of their flights because of the airline's fault as well (e.g. ridiculously short time windows between connecting flights, delayed flights, mechanical failures, etc), and airline have ridiculously high margins, it's not like not overbooking like crazy will make them go into red or something

Yeah that makes sense, there's probably some algorithm they use for their computers to decide who gets the boot or not.

You may have corporate-stockholm syndrome. It consists of embracing and defending the corporate overlords because it's some sort of coping mechanism. Other examples are getting mad about fast food workers demanding a higher minimum wage while also demanding that big corporations get massive tax cuts, or insisting on extreme de-regulation.

Yeah. Imagine you went to a car dealership and said "I want to buy that red corvette". The car salesman says "ok :) ", takes your money and right after that he says "fuck you, we're over sold", then insists you vacate the premises and come back in 4 hours for a shitty chevy cavalier.

gotcha.

I guess I am just pissed off that US carriers treat passengers like garbage and have so much power over people's lives, while other carriers actually get to treat people like people... they need to improve, but they have no incentive to do so. United's tone deaf, borderline defiant response really pissed me off.
