People talk themselves out if getting tickets from me all the time. I don't really like giving them. Basically just don't be an outright dick (or commit an especially egregious traffic violation) and I'll probably let you go. Occasionally people are particularly funny.

you're a cop? oh i've been let off before, but i don't think i have when it's like a speed trap or something, meaning he was just there waiting for someone to do a specific thing. Even when it's a speed trap and you're there waiting you routinely let people off?

Sort of. I once was speeding super heavily in Utah, I was going over 100 mph, and a cop pulled me over. He was super super disappointed to find out that I wasn't smuggling drugs, because the area apparently had a huge drug smuggling problem (I didn't know until he told me), and just gave me a warning. I didn't actually talk my way out of it, though, he just wasn't interested in speeding.

Yes I'm a cop. I work in NYC so I don't do speeding tickets. Generally the only time I'm set up in a "speed trap" situation would be at a stop sign where someone was hit in the crosswalk or something. Even then I usually just warn the driver, tell them why I'm there. If they're responsive and don't blow me off, 99.9% of the time they don't get a ticket.

Traffic court sucks more for us then it does for the motorist. When Ray Kelly was commissioner we would routinely lose 3 vacation days for losing at traffic court if we were deemed to be "unprepared" (and a lot more goes into a traffic court testimony than one would expect). You're better off just not writing them even if you're a dick who enjoys it.

I live in an area where cops love speed traps and stop sign traps (I guess those aren't really traps though). I know all of the places they tend to hide, though, so none of them work on me. Every so often I'll be driving and see one on the side of the road writing a ticket for someone.

yeah i thought about disputing my last one, though technically i did do it, but the cop was a total dick though, but this wasn't all that recent over 4 years ago.

I'll generally just sit at a stop sign pretending to be hunting for summonses as a deterrent while I eat my breakfast between calls.

The last 4 times a cop has pulled me over I did not recieve a ticket

This includes the time I was stopped in Texas for going 15 or so miles over the limit.
He pulled me out of the car and actually searched everything, worth not having what would have been probably a massive ticket.

Not really a quota per se. More of a "performance objective" ; )

There's no magic number of summonses to get to (at least not where I work) but you do have to play the game to a certain degree. Usually one for the month suffices for me, as writing 12 or so parking tickets is enough to keep them mostly happy (your bosses are never truly happy).
