All these folks doing the danganronpa things, suppose I might as well have my own topic, since Prof's basically the only one following my thoughts on Discord.



I'm four episodes into both arcs and the contrast is real. I'm more interested in continuing the Future arc, mainly because it's a story I don't know the conclusion to, whereas we definitely know what's going on in the Despair arc.


Though I will say that both arcs are incredibly entertaining. As far as I've watched, I'd give the Future arc a 7/10 and the Despair arc a 7.5/10.



Prof says he was not as high on the Future arc at this point in the series, so I'm looking forward to what comes next.



Also, I'm spacing this out so as to drive out people stupid enough to not want to be spoiled and still click on this topic because I know it will happen.



Next post will be some of the outbursts I had when watching in real time, followed by some (probably laughable) predictions.

Future Arc thoughts:

In episode 1, basically the only thing I said the whole time was WHAT THE f*** IS THAT VOICE COMING OUT OF THAT BLACK MAN'S FACE

Oh, on that note, I guess I should mention I'm watching the dubbed version. I am not weeb enough forgive me.

Episode 2 brought up the rules, and also a few observations on my part. The most key being DID HE JUST ELBOW DROP THROUGH THE GOD DAMN FLOOR

Seriously though, a few things were brought up. I notice the characters grip at their bracelets a lot, and a few of them have come at points later proven to have to do with their forbidden action. The first one I caught was Asahina after defending Naegi from the boxer, when it turned out her rule was to not get punched or kicked, and the black guy did so as well when asking him to stop accosting the others, when his was watching someone get assaulted. Kirigiri also brought up something about not necessarily disclosing their actions in case someone's forbidden from hearing them. This made me think that hers was exactly that, seeing as being a detective, she'd want to learn them as soon as possible.

Later, when Yu was chasing after Naegi and co. he gripped his bracelet after they entered the lower floor's hallway. This led me to believe perhaps his was entering that area, but Yu has since gone into the conference room, so that was proven false. Maybe it's something more generic like not being able to open a closed door? It would also explain why he felt the need to Raiden his way through the glass of the conference room like a crazy person.

At the end of episode 2 I was very upset. At the beginning of episode 3 I was even more upset somehow. Gozu was my favorite. Hearing Hercule yell at people and call them a******s was the best. Also, I may have mentioned this, but he also ELBOW DROPPED THROUGH THE GOD DAMN FLOOR

In episode 3, Kirigiri asked the wussy animator to share his forbidden action with her, which either suggests I was wrong about my assessment of her forbidden action, or shows how little faith she had in him actually doing so, which would mean he's someone to watch out for. Though his wording of "I can't" may mean his forbidden action is actually disclosing his forbidden action. That was about all I got from that episode. Oh, except I am beginning to think the boxer's forbidden action is going a 2-hour period without assaulting someone. Because he's 2 for 2 thus far.

Episode 4 was way more interesting. Just as I was musing to myself that if my forbidden action were turning right like Little Miss Backwards Zoolander's was, I am almost positive I would accidentally kill myself the first day, unless the only thing ever going through my head would be "don't turn right don't turn right don't turn right don't turn right", she turned right when saving Naegi. I was super pumped that I caught that, and then oh she's the bad guy. Nice hollow victory, me, good job.


As for the Despair arc, not a whole lot for me to say, really. The aphrodisiac scene was a bit awkward to watch, but Fuyuhiko and Kaz fighting over his zipper for like 30 solid seconds cracked me the f*** up for some reason. I am upset that Chiaki was a real person all along, but I assume this will be explained later. And why did they waste the good way to handle Mikan's character on the minor-character pharmacist? Ugh.

They really want me to care about this trio, but I just don't. Hopefully all this backstory means this is the last episode for one of th- oh god dammit, now Yu/Raiden is also Big Boss now. I can't give one character all the nicknames! RIP old man you were pretty cool.

f*** off with the fake-outs, DR3, I already saw the dead pharmacist. WTF now Yuden Boss is becoming a caricature of himself knock it off. You've already met the quota of using the word platitude for everyone's entire lifetimes, you can stop now.

Aw, RIP Vash the Stampede. This series continues to pick the worst survivors. Let's kill off the redeemable pharmacist and the sometimes-cool-when-he-wants-to-be blacksmith, but leave the actively annoying confectioner alive.

Panty-shot count: 3. The Japanese are really cool in some areas, but their weird anime girl panty obsession is definitely not one of them.

Oh hey Izuru Kamakura, good to know all of DR2 was for nothing.

Not getting any less-than-subtle hints out of that episode about anyone's forbidden action. I still don't have any idea as to what the confectioner's, the scout's, or Yu's are. Maybe the clues have been there, but I sure haven't caught them.

I think Future got better as it went and Despair...had its moments but dropped the ball. It was clearly limited by its runtime.

Future has one of my favorite DR moments near the end, and one of the characters WILDLY flips in terms of how much I liked them. Easily ends up one of my favorite DR characters.

Oh, one aspect of the Despair arc I forgot to bring up: how do Junko/Mukuro even function in the world? If the 3 minutes of airtime Junko got are any indication of how she usually behaves (which we know is the case because of DR1), then the fact that she hasn't ever been institutionalized is either impressive in just how committed she is to not getting caught doing this stupid s*** or an indictment to just how incompetent literally everyone in the Danganronpa universe is.

Though I still liked Despair a lot, since, well, I really like the cast.

I actually absolutely LOVE the DR3 dub. They had tons of fun with it and did actually change a bunch of lines that end up making the humor hit way harder. There are some moments near the end where it almost seemed like I was watching an abridged parody rather than the actual show, and I mean that in the best way possible. I'll admit that some of the VA changes for the DR2 character was bothersome, but they still did a good job.

The line from Kirigiri about someone's forbidden action possibly being to hear someone's forbidden action IS actually only in the dub, but it makes sense and seems like something that would have made plenty of sense for her to say.

Really I think DR3's dub is a pretty strong case for localization vs translation, which the series has already been known to do in the past, and it may be one of my favs.

Right but the problem is it seems like they removed the "someone's forbidden action might be saying their forbidden action" part with that which really should have been kept. Have her say both.

This Despair arc is in a really weird place where it can't decide what to do with Junko and Mukuro. One minute, she's gleefully got a torture victim's eyeball in her takoyaki, the next, she's giving the most serious ultimatum of the entire show to try and persuade Izuru to join the dark side. I get that it has to happen given the context with the story, but I just wish they'd hurry up and fully embrace the absurdity of her character already. You can't leave it halfway and expect viewers to be able to keep up with the mood swings.

The entire second half of the episode, I was stuck in disbelief. Nothing in this entire god damn episode amounted to anything. You could've told me "look, just skip it, the only thing you'll learn is that one of the survivors of DR1 is gonna die" and I would've laughed at you and watched it anyway and learn the error of my ways and come back to you and say "I'm sorry, DR3 topic follower, I didn't believe you, I just didn't think the writers would be that obtuse."

As soon as there was a discussion about Nagito's absence, followed by a transition to a lens flare, I was thinking to myself "oh god is this the plane crash please tell me this is the plane crash YES IT'S THE PLANE CRASH"

Now this is fanservice I can get behind. Behind.

See, this is exactly what I wanted Junko to be. She has been absolutely amazing this episode. "Have him give ya the ol' body pillow treatment; it'll perk ya right up!" And her mannerisms are somehow even better. Clubbing her sister out of nowhere, doing the fashion model poses while she sprays herself with perfume, I love everything about the first half of this episode. I don't think this smile has ever left my face.

And then the second half was like the other side of a coin. That was....... something I watched. I feel like if that were just shown as it was, it would've been in extremely bad taste, and I would've felt incredibly uncomfortable. But the one minor detail in having Mukuro sing the overture while it happened, and showing her with the sheet music with arms outstretched every now and then gave it EXACTLY the feel they were going for, and may have single-handedly made that scene the most powerful in the entire series so far.

That was a rollercoaster of an episode, and I enjoyed every second of the ride. Best episode of either arc by far.

Jesus Christ, I used to only really look forward to the Future episodes, because they were the only ones with an endgame I wasn't familiar with. For the Despair arc, we all know the destination, and the journey to get there for a long time was this dopey sitcom that had no real weight besides foreshadowing character developments in the Future arc. The moment the focal point hit the animator, the Despair arc has lunged forward as both the more intriguing and entertaining half of this series.

Up until tonight, whenever I finished a Despair episode, I just had to go on and watch the next Future episode because they were the ones with all the new information for me to take in and digest, and I couldn't help but see what twists came next. After this array of emotions the last two episodes of the Despair arc have put me through, it's 100% the other way around now. I don't even give a f*** about the DR1 characters anymore. I have to know the conclusion to Mitarai's story now.

Bye Kirigiri. Not that I wanted any of them to die, but Naegi was probably top of my list. I was holding out hope (lol) that Monaka meant Naegi would kill himself and that's why he'd cause one of the survivors' deaths, but I knew that was beyond what they'd be willing to do. I figured anyone else dying would be sad, but I guess the series has conditioned me to not care that much about the characters I like most, because I honestly don't feel anything about it. I'm actually just impressed that they managed to kill off someone I like in a way that makes sense from a story-making standpoint for once. That has never really been DR's strong suit, but by god, they've done it for what I'd consider the second time all series. Also, I am far from putting it past these guys to worm their way into reviving her through some kinda deus ex machina bulls***.

For the first time after an episode, I scrolled down to the comments to see the consensus, and everyone's complaining that her forbidden action wasn't fair. Really? The guy who wasn't allowed to witness violence in a killing game is whatever, but not letting one person survive 4 days in a game that realistically shouldn't have even taken this long is an unfair rule.

Whatever, let's go kill off Chiaki, my body is ready.

Despair Arc episode went back to not accomplishing anything augh. This half of the show has had the two best episodes and just a ton of bleh episodes.

Back to the Future time.

Ayyy I was right about Yu's forbidden action. So I'm what? 2 for 16? And the two I got were the two that were foreshadowed to hell and back, but whatever, I'll take it. That and I don't think any of the others had been hinted at enough before their reveal that you could realistically guess them. The chairman's, maybe, but it only became more obvious moments before it was showed. Oh, and I called Monomi a fat liar and then it turned out she was a robot, so that's like a half, I guess.

Oh boy, more cliffhangers. I'm glad I didn't watch this regularly every week. As you probably could've deduced from the breakneck pace I'm setting, I like binge-watching/playing stories I enjoy, so these weekly waits very well could've killed me.

Perhaps they praised the overall vibe the game was going for.

and that's when the light bulb turned on.

Despair arc over. Not really sure if it's possible to think a series that finishes with a whole school blowing up and the world ending can go out with a whimper, but here we are. It started out as a wacky, fun sitcom, slowed down to introduce new ideas and characters, ramped up to a super high school level climax, then..... just kinda went through the motions to get to where DR1 started. The idea that a few brief Chiaki/Izuru interactions are what led to her existence in DR2 in the first place was pretty neat, though.

I started this topic giving it a 7.5, which promptly jumped up to a 9, then petered out..... probably back to about a 7.5.

My 19 year old niece really enjoyed watching me play the first two games a few years ago, and I was really looking forward to showing her this arc especially, but Jesus Christ, not anymore. The two scenes that broke Chisa and the class are PROBABLY not something she wants to see.

It's kinda disappointing too in a way since in...I think DR1 or DR2? It was mentioned that Junko lured the students into becoming SHSL Despair one by one, each with personalized approach to plunge them into despair. This is just mass produced.

Despair Arc has the same problem as all Persona 4 content post the original game. It boils down the characters to their most popular trait and just has them hammer that like robots. At least, it does in the very short amount of time it gives those characters, since they're basically window dressing. Danganronpa Zero is very hard to consider canon in this timeline, even though characters from it make cameos. Twilight Murder is totally given the shaft. The method of despair induction is a total letdown from what was expected.
