The characters all looking exactly like they did before falling into despair is distracting, but it was still a blast.

Hope is so hard to decide on what I think of it.

It doesn't feel like it deserves a high score but it just makes me so f***ing happy because of my attachments to the characters due to DR2

Yeah the end's pretty terrible for all the arcs. Also lame that nobody from the first two games actually dies in this. Mind control was the biggest sin of the series though. So lame. (well, also Future introducing a bunch of new characters and killing all the interesting ones)

For the many who haven't heard it, the dub highlights.

8:20 is the line in question.

It was well worth rewatching the series for the dub. LIVE AND DIE BY THE MEME.

If it wasn't obvious, Juzo is the character that broke my top 10. In a Fuyuhiko-esque way I went from loathing the guy to cheering and crying for him. Really made DR3 worthwhile for me. I hear he's in Killer Killer, so I need to check that out.

Wait what?
the last line spoken by Kirigiri is an outtake that was accidentally used instead of the finalized voice clip. this was immediately recognized by staff and fans after it was uploaded to the Funimation website. nevertheless, it remained up for several hours before being fixed.

OK well, that's the line I saw. I was wondering what the hell Naegi's response was supposed to mean. What was Kirigiri supposed to say?

I mean it kinda does fit both the hope wins motif and the entire series pretty well. I wasn't surprised you called it a lot of people thought she would survive somehow

Wait that line was an accident? Lol. Whateverer, it's canon in my heart.

The comment in the video description that the DR3 dub is like the Ghost Stories dub except actually following the plot properly is pretty spot on.

Alright, FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, it did what Danganronpa does best and makes you feel proper emotions right before hitting you with emotions you're absolutely not supposed to feel. It leads to a unique experience you can really only get through DR, but it also leaves viewers, myself included, feeling conflicted and confused most of the time. There's no real reason to try and guess where the story is going because 1. you're probably wrong and 2. the real answer is probably going to be a lot less satisfying.

This also leads to obtuse motives. I just finished this entire story in 4 days, and even then, I don't really get what any of the new characters' motives for their actions were. The only characters I feel I understood were the confectioner, the blacksmith, the pharmacist, and THE GREAT GOZU and I'm guessing that's because they really didn't mean anything to the overall plot, and if they did, they'd have also had these convoluted plans that didn't make any sense whatsoever oh wait a minute the confectioner had that anyway whoops.

I can ask at least one question per character that is fundamental to know what any of this was.

If the boxer's goal from the beginning was to weed out despair, namely the attacker, when Yu took off to go kill Naegi in the conference room, why did he say "at least let me take care of his buddies"? If Naegi is the sole attacker, does that mean he believes the entire DR1 group is full of despair? Multiple times over the course of the show, he did things just to be an a****** that makes no sense in context of the way things ended.

If Chisa was "infected" by despair from the moment the tragedy happened, why did she urge Yu to weed out all despair in the meeting? Just to stir the pot of the game about to take place?

If the end-goal was to drive Mitarai to broadcast hope throughout the world, what was the purpose of any of the s*** Tengan did the entire time, once the game started?

Actually, why did Mitarai even sit on that for so long, considering the s*** he's been through? You'd think maybe he'd use that trump card WAY before things got to this point.

Oh wow Yu, way to stab your best friend, aka the only guy you trusted this entire game and because an old guy told you everyone was despair I guess he's just collateral damage now? Also hey, Asahina just opened the door, you can just kill everyone in here now ok never mind apparently you changed your mind in the last 20 seconds after Naegi TOLD YOU THE SAME THING HE HAS BEEN THE ENTIRE f***ING TIME.

I don't understand what ANYONE was thinking for this entire show! Every time the writers decided a character needed to turn a corner in order for the story to progress, they just did so without any proper motivation to go along with it. In case you had any trouble rooting against Yu for the first 5 episodes, we've turned his eye black, is that better? Oh, now he's a good guy, so his eye isn't black anymore, you're welcome.

I'm used to Junko not making sense, considering that's just the whole point of her character, but I really didn't want that to spread to the rest of the cast.

Yu weeding out despair was the main source of despair.

It's Danganronpa, I've long stopped caring about mechanics making sense.

I just want people's actions to make sense. Besides Junko's and Mukuro's of course. That's kinda their whole schtick. In the first game, Togami was a little bipolar, and Celeste's motive was wonky (gonna chalk that one up to her mucking her final figurative hand), but until Junko showed back up, I was able to follow why everything else was happening. In DR2, Mikan was the only truly confusing character, and that was fully explained at the end.

Once Yu's and Sakakura's backstories were fleshed out, nothing about what they did in the Future arc jived with their character development. I don't think any two of Tengan's actions meshed together at all.

I'm actually really conflicted on whether to keep following the series at all. It depends on how much the whole hope/despair grudge match keeps floating to the surface and how they decide to handle it. If they keep things black and white, like the first two games, it comes across as silly, but they don't have to try too hard, and I can at least follow what's going on. If they try to blur the two sides together, as they did in this series, they just end up confusing themselves and everyone else.

I hope DRv3 just sticks to the clear-cut good vs evil mantra they built up at the start, focuses on the turmoils the characters are going through during the game itself, and saves the major battle for the end, because that's all I have faith in the writers to be able to pull off at this point.

I guess now that I've slept on it, final scores:

Despair Arc: 7/10
Future Arc: 5.5/10
Hope Episode: 9/10

I know it seems like I've just been s***ting on the writing for like 3 posts straight, but I was still thoroughly entertained by most scenes of both arcs. It was a lot of fun trying to piece things together, and a good amount of the time, things were foreshadowed just enough to make you feel like you know where things are going. It wasn't until the end of both arcs where it became apparent that they just didn't know how to tie everything together that they were foreshadowing.

And then for the final episode, they just said screw it, let's just ignore how the real world is supposed to work, throw all modern conventions out the window, and end this the only way we know how, and you know what? I loved it. Nobody did anything counter to their one-dimensional character traits. It was like the feel-good-est fanfiction imaginable and I didn't care. Which, in retrospect, makes me less angry about Kirigiri coming back because whatever, sure, why not.
