Like I said earlier, there are only like 3 places where N64 wins. Zora Swimming is the only big one iirc

Everything else 3DS is so much better

Visit the Mayor's residence. Ideally at 10 AM (which is when it opens) on Day 1.

Talk to everybody there.

Yet another stupid change. That's way less funny!

First time you play as character other than Link in a Zelda game*, so that's noteworthy.

Also, I love how Anju just gives you a Goron's room key just because you have the same name. She's terrible at her job.

The 3DS version did make a change so that you have to at least be a Goron yourself to get the key.

Which makes it a little better, at least.

I'm really excited that you enjoyed the Kafei-Anju sidequest as much as you did.

Playing it without a guide, it was amazing to piece so much together (and as with most things for me, it took many cycles). If you explore Clock Town a lot, you definitely take notice of stuff like Kafei always coming out of Laundry Pool as one of the first thing that happens during the game. The Curiosity Shop seems like a too-suspicious area, but you don't know what it participates in. That bell that rings Kafei's hideout is tantalizing. Anju isn't always at the counter at the Inn, and it's unclear why, or who this girl is, but she seems worried. And of course, the prancing thief is extremely memorable already from when he robs the old lady and you get the Bomb Mask.

One extremely punishing thing about the N64 version: You know how you failed the Kafei block puzzle? So did I. Except when I failed... I had to start at Dawn of the First Day again. Same with Romani getting abducted by aliens. Some of this stuff only happens once per cycle, and that lends real weight to it.

Also: screencap of your masks please!

Wear the couple mask in the mayor's house

As for the Keaton mask, wear it while you cut one of those moving bushes.

Also, at this point of the game the milk bar should have finally become useful. Before Night 3, I mean.

okay, I started on stone tower. man, this clone song is kind of a bummer! all I do here is walk to a switch, play the song, hookshot, change masks and repeat 3x. this is what I was afraid of when I got the song. it's really tedious. no enemies really, no interesting mechanic, just.. really straightforward.

after three or so repetitions, I get to the top and YEAH OWL THERE'S A GODDAMN OWL IN THE DUNGEON HERE YEAH LET'S GO STONE TOWER

Yeah the reward for getting Couple's Mask isn't great, but at least it has some cool scenes. There's another sidequest that requires way more effort than the reward is worth that ticks me off: assembling the frog chorus. You can do it now but there's no need since you don't get a mask out of it or anything really worthwhile.

It gives you the ability to do that questline thus leading to other rewards. But no, nothing directly.

Any mask that doesn't have some gameplay utility has some "sidequest" utility, though a bunch of those are just "wear this here and get a Heart Piece".

alright, I've been slacking lately and it's time to change that! today's goal is to complete the stone tower temple. I want to say a lot here but I don't think there's much to say with where I am so far. each room is taking me like 1-2 minutes longer than it should, but I'm advancing without TOO much trouble. the one spot that got me, for some stupid reason, is the lava room with the masks. I thought I had killed them all and ran around trying to figure out what to do until I just killed all six again. I think, because of all the lava, I was assuming there was some other more intelligent solution. nope!

some more mask hopping and exploration later, I arrive at the garo master. this guy tricked me a little. I had no problem just hitting him with my sword at first but then he started blocking everything. I thought it was an execution thing and he took several hearts off me before I started trying out some other strategies. the arrows was a no-go but the hookshot gave me what I needed. I beat him with half a heart left. I get my treasure.. the light arrow! now don't get me wrong, I like a good arrow as much as anyone, but that's four arrows and no boomerang. what's up with that? (not that I would want the boomerang at this point in the game, but redundant items has been a theme of this game so far.)

I consider resetting the clock, but I decide to just play around a little. I head back to the entrance and flip the temple. there's some tricky deku platforming here thanks to some wind boosters, but nothing too taxing. one thing I'm finding with this dungeon is how much of a letdown it is to find a treasure chest and get a stray fairy. this happens a lot. you go through some decent effort to hit a switch and play a song and oh it's just a fairy. I can also see some painful backtracking with having to go back to the beginning, flip and then get some treasure chests that I'm praying are just fairies. I don't want to get that convoluted with this dungeon. right now it's the perfect blend of tricky without being painful. keep it that way.

the room that gets me, weirdly enough, is a really dumb puzzle involving a box and flipping the level repeatedly. there's these stupid enemies that keep respawning that make it really dumb. I took a lot of damage from them out of pure apathy. I finally get the box where it belongs with a single heart left and go on to the next room. it's a mini-boss, that guy who pops out of the holes but with some lava thrown in. I hit him a couple times but finally get hit. back to the beginning.

it's the middle of the second day and I should probably reset the clock but screw it, I did that damn box puzzle and I don't want to do it again. time to push through and see if I can get to a better spot before having to start over.

okay, I beat that guy and it opened up a light source. I think I misinterpreted it though.

I went and flipped the castle again and went literally everywhere to no avail. I found a few fairies and rupees and stuff but nothing useful. I'm now 100% sure there's nothing on this side.. but I'm also down to my last 12 hours so it's time to reset. at least I feel good knowing I don't have to go back and do anything on this side.. for now, anyway.

that'll be tomorrow.
