no amount of money would convince me to do this, the lesser paying jobs are also typically miserable, either because of dealing with the brain damaged general public or because of dealing with your brain damaged co-workers(people that get paid minimum wage get paid minimum wage for a reason)
Well let's see here. Minimum wage nationally is $7.25/hr, working 20 hours a week for let's say 50 weeks a year (give a couple weeks for full vacations), that gives us $7,250 a year. Let's say roughly 30% goes to taxes, and we're left with just over $5,000 a year. I'd like to imagine that I could live very decently with $100,000 per year, so 95k a year, multiplied by the 45 years I'd be in the workforce (I'll put some of that 100k into a retirement fund, of course), and we've got:
With the $x to do y topics, I thought this might be fun. Just state how much you would want to be paid to do whatever is in the title.
RULES -Be specific when voting! Give me an actual dollar amount or explicitly say that you'd reject the offer. It helps me with tallying and calculating. -1 vote, no alts, blah blah, you have until whenever I put the next topic up to vote (at least 24 hours) -Give the minimum amount you want in US dollars and cents, "free," "no deal," and negative amounts are acceptable. Google is good for currency conversion (search "1000 Euro to USD" without quotes, for example). -Read the stipulations every time for any rules/information that are for the particular topic. Only I can add/remove/change them later as needed. -You can nominate 3 things per day. You can write your own stipulations or have me take care of it. -Ask me (or the original nominator) about stipulations if you need more information.
TODAY'S OFFER: Be stuck with a minimum wage job for the rest of your life. Should you accept the offer, you'll be forced to work in a minimum wage job of your choice until you die.
STIPULATIONS FOR THE OFFER 1. You MUST actually have a minimum wage job and keep it. If you get laid off or fired, you must get another job in a reasonable amount of time. You cannot get a job that's not normally a minimum wage job (no minimum wage neurosurgeons!) and you cannot be self-employed. 2. You can only earn minimum wage. No raises, no tips, no bonuses, no benefits (retirement plan, health coverage, etc.). 3. The minimum wage can change over time. The amount is whatever it is where you work. 4. You must work part time at least, or about 20 hours per week. 5. If you don't follow these stipulations, you must pay back the full amount you received.
If we would be allowed to choose which minimum wage job, I would accept for $3,000,000 which would offset the lost money from better paying jobs.
If we are stuck with a job we hate... I'd have to go with no less than $10,000,000 to not only offset the lost money of better paying jobs, but to also afford doing things fun to offset the horrible job I have.
If we would be allowed to choose which minimum wage job, I would accept for $3,000,000 which would offset the lost money from better paying jobs.
You can choose the job, as long as it's something where it makes sense to earn minimum wage. You can get a job as a dishwasher but not as a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

It was easy to do and easy to be good at. People might not respect the person at the drive through, but they still appreciate good service and so from the vast majority you get paid in gratitude.
I'd probably Settle int eh range of 1.5M. I think with proper money management it would be more than enough seed money to put to use and then eventually live comfortably on. I'm not asking for decadence from now until my 80s. I would probably still limit where I lived to a place that could be afforded on my salary and try and use the money to pay for the little things that I'd like to enjoy with my life.
To recap:
-Accept -1,500,000 dollars
(This number could probably be smaller, but I want a good cushion in case of random hospitalization and whatnot. It probably take less than that to afford all small luxuries I would enjoy in my life)
2. You can only earn minimum wage. No raises, no tips, no bonuses, no benefits (retirement plan, health coverage, etc.).
What about passive income?
Example: I use part of my payout to buy an apartment complex, hire a management company to run it, and collect monthly rental income without materially participating in the business. Is this permissible?

Earning money from investments (real estate, stocks, bonds, etc.) is fine. The apartment complex is fine. But remember: you can't turn it into work (actually hiring a management company yourself is borderline enough), and you must always check into your minimum wage job even if you earn a lot of money from your investments. Someone's gotta keep the place running!

$3.5 million would allow for a decent life overall. Plus Oregon has the highest minimum there is ($8.80). But I could be a blackjack dealer or bartender forever and be fine with it (just don't accept tips).

Then I'd do this easily for $2 million. It's such a win-win. I pay off this house, put a down payments on a Cali house for my parents, keep a couple hundred grand for expenses, and invest the rest in real estate as a passive partner. With only 20 hours of work to worry about, most of my time is freed up for whatever I want. I can go to the gym daily, get my Masters for the hell of it, have fun every damn night, and never have to worry about the pressures of a career. Hell, with a house paid off, 20 hours at a minimum wage job is enough to cover most monthly expenses here in Vegas, so my investment income will be gravy and I can live the good life forever.
Wait, until I DIE? Why can't I retire at 65?

What if you become sick or disabled? Especially if you are in your 90s?
Although I can't imagine any jobs right now, if there is a minimum wage job you're capable of taking, you must take it. If you can't walk anymore, you might be able to get some kind of stay at home job online or something that pays minimum wage, for example.

oh man
if I could just be a blackjack dealer for 20 hours a week until I died, I'd reconsider. But he said no guarantees :(
again, I don't want to accept this. Anything that is for the rest of your life I can see regretting 10 years down the road. But 10 million is hard to turn down!

If it were up to 65, then I'd accept $5 million. Still, $10 million is more than enough to compensate for my terrible job, the wasted time and money in school trying to get a good job, and it can be used for investments to help with income. I'm hoping it would also be enough to compensate for inflation, but who knows how the economy will change.

Could I use the up-front money to buy a bar and work part-time as a bouncer in my own bar for minimum wage? What options would I have in terms of profit from the bar that would still keep me within the terms and conditions of the scenario?

The fact that we can get away with 20 hours a week makes this very enticing. If it was full-time I'd reject, but this still leaves 4 days off every week and sub-8-hour days when you do work if you can find a job with flexible enough hours.
So given that it still gives me over half of my time to be happy, I'll do it for $2 Million.

I'd consider rejecting because this locks me out of things I would consider doing in the future (running for office, writing for money, etc.), but then I realize that with enough money I could do those things in my massive amount of free time for free. Also, I think it's at least reasonable to believe that I'll make a decent amount of money in my eventual career, so I should offset that as well.
Hmm...$20 million.

I will have enough money in whatever I do, and having a minimum wage job for the rest of my life would lock me out of my passions and my life goals (becoming a professor and doing research). No amount of money is worth that.
Yeah, the fact that it doesn't have to be 40 hours a week makes this much more enticing. I could handle 20 hours a week of a minimum wage job as long as I had enough money to where how much I make from work isn't an issue.
But yeah, not being able to do something you really enjoy because of this stipulation kinda sucks. So I don't think I could accept it.
So... what happens if the concept of a minimum wage job is abolished?
