I'd be willing to see what an MGS5 would be before weighing in on whether it's good or bad that it exists. If they set it say 30 years in the future with a new cast, it could be pretty inoffensive to the series story and do its own thing.

Help a brother out, I just looked at the wikipedia page, just saw a few vague quotes from Hideo, nothing about Snake. But yeah that sounds odd.

MGS needs to ride off into the sunset. MGS4 was overall a solid ending.

Even though b8 has a hard on for big boss, his side games aren't that good. Ya we all love MGS3, but its different from things like portable ops and peace walker just dont have it. I fear rising won't either.

As for my other choices:

Call of Duty
The Legend of Zelda
Anything Star Wars
Final Fantasy
Any FPS set in WW2

None, really.

It's pretty spiteful to want franchises that people enjoy to die, especially those that are still producing very critically acclaimed and commercially successful games like Mario, Zelda, etc.

That said, there are some that should definitely take a break and reevaluate themselves. Final Fantasy, Call of Duty, Sonic... These could still be great if they cut back on the output and focused on improving the series.

Also, when a series ends it needs to stay ended. MGS, Halo, Resident Evil... Continuing the series through reboots, spinoffs, prequels and such is fine, but trying to keep the same damn storyline going after deliberately drawing it to a close is just irritating. If you're going to end something, end it. Don't change your mind afterwards.

I'm kinda baffled at all these Zelda responses since I have extremely fond memories of Twilight Princess. Has the series produced a series of really bad games since then that people hate it?

The stupid thing is that the main YouTube user I watch videos from:

-Considers The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and even Spirit Tracks to be among his favorite games of all time
-Really liked Metroid: Other M even though he conceded that it's nowhere near as good as Super Metroid, Prime, and Echoes (to be fair, he's a huge Team Ninja fan) and that it's story is bad
-Has not liked any Final Fantasy released after Final Fantasy IX (though to be fair, he never got around to the series until 2007-2008).
