There's been plenty of civil debates on religion and politics here over the years. People tend to exaggerate how much trolling takes place in them.

Sess' posts now are just inane. Like a quality black hole, no good discussion can escape from them.

yeah, i've actually seen a number of BIG CONTROVERSIAL DEBATE continue very calmly and stable throughout. it's always surprising to find, but they only really happen on b8 too.

i mean i have seen quite a few hijacked ones that turn into whether or not a user is a murderer or something that can be reduced to 'e-peen', but still. decent amount of good political topics, it just depends who's in them and how much attention they get.

It's not about wanting random people online to like you - it's that if one incident happens, you may not be able to make a single post without that subject coming up every time. I've been through it, every post I made would just be scoffed at and derailed to a topic about users instead of the actual discussion. You just can't be enjoy the board for a while, that's why I had to hold back a lot of posts for a while.

Another thing is, Board 8 literally can stalk you down and tell your real life acquaintances about you and this has happened multiple times. This is another reason I've held back making a few topics - we've got some real 4chan-like users here and all it takes is one.

Right, but you have to realize that 1 person being tormented a bit like this translates into a ton of fun for lots of people on the board. Using cost-benefit analysis, it's really good for the board.

I've always thought ayuyu was way over-hated (see my post comparing him to lihlih), but I will say that I've seen a fair amount of bad things recently so saying he's completely undeserving of any hate is a bit much. I don't mind someone having an opinion or idea about how someone generally posts (I mean, it is a fact that ayuyu posts in a certain manner after all), but harassing and just hating someone even when they're decent is bad.

Only reason I started coming here was because of Survivor, and basically for the past 3 years it's been the same ever since.

I don't really have any interest in getting to know anyone here. I barely know the people I've been talking to for the past 3 years as is! I already frequent a different social board that knows me/I know them better, and real life kinda gets in the way of caring about B8.

Have you looked at the topic that you're in right now? We're having a deep meta discussion about our own society. This is way more serious than any other message board I know.

And when you get into the topics about specific things like TV shows or game news, there is often extensive and valuable discussion. That's mainly the reason I can't stop coming to this board, because there is just so much news that I get from here, AND it's a great place to actually talk and analyze and speculate about things.

but there are a couple religion topics that've been interesting over the years - i'm remembering an ask a christian one we had a while ago that was very civil and got through nicely.

religious history topics would just make things go into 'man see how many people christianity has killed!' so i reaaally don't think you want to go that route.

Religion is kind of doomed to have a bad discussion on this board because we have a few to many scientific minds that will come in and turn it into a "god vs. no god" discussion which is just a stupid stalemate. I'd be more interested in having some religious history topics, or "ITT: I rank every demon in the goetia"

I'm actually reading a book about the Crusades, it's pretty damn amazing and it makes me realize even more how Islam and Christianity are close.

I mean both Religion worship Jesus, muslims simply don't see Jesus as God Incarnate, just as a mortal prophet.

You can't even be a muslim if you don't believe in Jesus.

if you're trying to figure out if you're christian or not you've literally got a dozen subsectors of it to go.

the more distinctive nature is that the jesus belief makes a huge difference between how you take the old and new testament. muslims have been known to focus more on the old, if not completely within some groups. christians focus on the new heavily. while others literally have newer-than-new testaments to work with.

it gets weird.

when I was graduating my high school I had to see my computer science teacher at some lunch time and he asked me what I believe in and then tried to tell me about some muslim stuff and encouraged me to give it a read some time, and told me about how some prophesies actually came true or something (I'm going off my memory here and I was kinda just nodding along)

well technically we're ALL God's sons (well most of us at least) from what I understand. Jesus ascended as something more, much like how the zords come together to make the mechazord in power rangers.

The best part is that the third part of the mechazord, the holy spirit, is literally all of us, so we're all the mechazord god too in a way.

maybe you feel that way. I'm always having interesting and fresh discussions with my friends from board 8, except off the board. my biggest lament in this topic is that we've lost that feeling where you could bring that kind of discussion onto the board itself and mingle with people you wouldn't normally chat with every day.
Yea I can definitely have hour long conversations with b8 friends off the board.

I just notice people making the same topics over and over for the past couple of years.

Like we had 2 N64 vs PS1 topics since last summer. Then there's Anagram making the same topics every few months.

But somehow I'm still attached to this place. I don't take it seriously anymore, but I still come here everyday, if only to lurk.
