Pilots are usually a good ballpark of show quality. In theory they're supposed to be the best the producers can throw at you to sell you on the show, but in practice the writers haven't really gotten loose with the characters and what works at that point. So yeah I'd agree with Cokes that they're usually not great.
Thing is I'd disagree that watching the pilot and hating it means you can keep going and likely end up enjoying the show. That just doesn't really happen. If you were like, unimpressed but not offended by the pilot I could see the show growing on you. If you liked the pilot a little I could see liking the show a lot. But I've never seen a pilot I hated turn into a show that I could even tolerate.

But not a single one of Parks' first six episodes is better than B/B-. Bob's Burgers' pilot was a B-/C+. Most pilots are in the B range, which is fine. The list of A or A- caliber pilots is exceptionally small

I disagree with your opinion. I also am mad at you for making this topic, convincing me to give this show another chance.

The term "Pilot" comes from a "Pilot Light", or, the ignition point for something larger. It's less about "taking the show off" and more about gauging interest levels and building the foundation for what's to come.
Your analogy is a lot more whimsical though, which I like.

idk if any of you guys have noticed this yet but all your examples of good pilots are drama shows, and all your examples of ok-bad pilots are comedy shows.
drama shows can get you hooked much easier with the pilot, comedies are not only usually half as long, but usually heavily rely on familiarity with characters that literally are just now being introduced to you in the pilot.

Also, Fringe's pilot was very subpar but that show's turned into something pretty good. Farscape's pilot was fairly dreadful and that became a top ten series for me that ended up paying me back in the most amazing ways. Star Trek :Deep Space Nine's pilot is almost unrecognizable in tone and quality compared with what the show later becomes. TNG's pilot is just awful.
There are definitely a lot of dramas (yes, everything I just listed is sci-fi, granted) whose pilots are not especially representative of their overall quality.

just saying that in general it is easier to make a good dramatic pilot. comedies have to grow into things more, while it is easy to hook someone with a drama. i am sure there are lots of examples otherwise...but the trend is obvious.

it's not the best episode, but there are only 4 full ones available on Hulu, and I had only watched 3 of them, and that was the best of the three I had seen
