I was just scrolling through a FAQ and kept seeing the same six or seven single-type Mon's appearing in every area. I have to beat a gym before I'll even get a bird, and I'm still not sure what the rest of my team will be
(Yes I know I'm super late to the bandwagon but I bought Soul Silver a week before B/W came out so I'm just now sort of catching up)
Probably because BW is kind of bad up to the first gym, not much variety available and it throws a million little tutorials/story scenes at you every step of the way. Gets way better after that though.

Mistake you're making - overlooking the fact that we might not want to be saved.
B/W have some pretty good Pokemon diversity early on. Maybe not until after the 1st Gym, but once you get to the third there have been a ton of great guys to get. I don't know if it's noticeably better than the other games but it certainly isn't any worse.
Probably because there are no old Pokémon in the main game, so type distribution is very low. There are very few Water or Flying Pokémon throughout the whole game.
But to be fair, most of them aren't awful. They're pretty useful. They're just not very varied.

Get a Sawk. They're amazing and turn the second gym into a joke. Though I think Sawk is rare in White and common in Black, I think you have Throh more common, but it should still be possible to grab one.

It may be Normal, but Lillipup's final evolution can last you all the way to the E4. In my first playthrough, it ended up being my highest leveled Pokemon when I was done.

From: Robazoid | #010 But then who will fly me later on?
I'm seeing Woobat but that's an awful name so I'm wary even if they're double type.
GOLURK
Hell, you're White version. Just wait for an in-party flyer until after the 8th Gym and get BRAVIARY, the most badass and american Pokemon ever (with the possible exception of Snorlax).
Those are the only two good fliers in Gen 5. The rest suck. (besides legendaries)
Golurk is actually not that great for in-game battling in my experience, it learns no good non-special ghost attacks and freaking everything knows dark or ghost attacks, but it's still probably the best flier you can get without waiting for Rufflet and then training it to whatever level it evolves at.

Yeah it can, if you can wait until the 7th gym and have the patience to raise Golett to lvl. 42 (I might be wrong, but I recall that only Golurk learns fly whereas Golett doesn't?).
Golurk is awesome in every possible way, but you might want to get a crappy Unfezant for flying before that. Don't try to use it because it's LOL, worse than Pidgeot.

What about the dark and psychic guys I'm seeing? They any good? I'm looking for type spread mostly which is why I prefer double-types even if they're technically worse (I suck at the Pokemon metagame)

EDIT: Sorry, Minun and Purrloin
Munna works decently enough, but Purrloin is absolute crap. But as far as Munna goes, B/W has tons of Psychics and you could do better.

red13n posted... Putting the Braviary line off til the end of the game was one of the worst things about BW.
Not really. Braviary evolves at a super late level anyway, and Rufflet has preevolution stats, so it wouldn't really have been viable unless they knocked its evolution level down to like 35, which it should have been to begin with but eh.

Yeah I meant Munna, was in a rush after I realized I didn't specify
Blitzle the zebra thing actually looks kind of cool.
And thanks for the help guys. I bought this as something to play while I walk five miles straight on a treadmill so I can't exactly look things up as I go.
Blitzle's awful. I tried to use one and it just refused to be good.
My ultimate team was Samurott, Sawk, Gothitelle, Zweilgous/Hydreigon (it hadn't evolved when I beat the Elite Four the first time), Lilligant, and Golurk (solely for flying). I wanted to replace Samurott, but I couldn't find anything better that learned surf.
I have to tell you, Sawk and Lilligant carried the team. Sawk is a great in-game sweeper that requires no set-up, and Lilligant is a great sweeper that requires some set-up. Unless your enemy is resistant to both grass and fighting, they can handle virtually anything, the rest of my team was almost just back-up for them. The only trainers who gave me trouble were Elesa and Alder, and the latter only because he has goddamn three bug types who are all level 75+.
People will tell you that Gothitelle is bad, they're probably right, but I liked its design too much to not use it.

Cool, I think I have enough to get started at least. I guess I was right to think avoiding Purrloin, Munna, and the like early on was a good bet. I usually like to get my full team as early as possible but I guess for this I'll be waiting at least for a Rufflet.

Don't go five pokemon only. Rufflet doesn't appear until after the seventh gym. Just grab a flier to last you until then, at least.

Lillipup is f***ing amazing. At least, once it evolves into Herdier. It's a bit weak up until then, but still very usable. It's definitely the Pokémon to add to your line-up before you get access to Sawk/Throh and the 'mons in the forest. While it does get outclassed and power creep starts overtaking it after around the 7th gym, I still took it to the E4.
Man, I really need to play BW again before BW2 comes out. Damn new experience with the 3rd-ish version. I barely branched out with my White; I kept to just Samurott, Stoutland, Victini, Excadrill, and Archeops until the E4, where I added one of the trio just because. My Excadrill was pretty crappy too; it got outsped by everything unless it had Sandstorm up. That was pretty much my fault though in that I didn't pay attention to natures and let it get +Sp Atk/-Spd.
Nanis23 posted... Only one person said Excadrill and he said he was crappy
What am I reading here Excadrill top tier at beating the main game(along with Sawk)
...did you just stop reading at "My Excadrill was pretty crappy..." or something? I literally said that it was my fault that my Excadrill was so bad.
+Excadrill isn't really an "early" Pokémon, IIRC it can't be gotten until around the 4th Gym, and even then you have to go a bit out of your way to get it at that point.
