Some games require an older version of directx than comes standard with newer versions of Windows, so they prompt you to install it just to make sure.

You should be able to click "cancel" and skip it.

Haven't liked it since my friend bought Portal 2. Forced a Steam install, then wouldn't work anyway and he had to hack into Steam to get his game to work. Any program that forces a game to not work out-of-box is a bad program.

Except this story is likely bogus and there's nothing wrong with needing steam to play a game.

Steam's been all right to me, but the only game I ever got for it was free. I don't have a way of purchasing from Steam. I wish they sold gift cards at retail like Amazon. Either that or I wish Amazon would get a decent download selection.

its kinda dick to the consumer to force people to have steam to play it, but part of that is accepted due to how we've moved to a service based economy and because of the piracy aspect.

Steam to me is great for indie titles and older games, but until i see cheaper prices for brand new titles, id rather just take the physical copy.

Given I bought him the game for Christmas, I was pretty mad when it wouldn't work. What he eventually did was literally hack into Steam, figure out whatever it was "doing" to Portal and then swapped the Portal registry with a different Steam game. I'm not great with computers so I don't know exactly what he did, but it seemed like a giant hassle. Then he switched them back after beating Portal. The whole thing was dumb and turned me off from Steam.

I just suck at telling it. He was a computer engineer major at Purdue, he really can legit do that stuff, though admittedly I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

The only reason this board doesn't crucify steam is because it's Valve and Valve does no wrong

If EA made Steam everyone would be constantly complaining about how it's the worst thing ever

People really don't like Steam? I've never had a problem with Steam at all. Like, seriously never. Steam's been great for me.

The one thing that pissed me off was when Dead Rising 2 on Steam ALSO required me to log into Microsoft Live, but that was not a Steam problem.

Do you not remember the HL2 release? Steam was the worst thing ever. Everybody hated it, and it took years for it to improve to a point where it's considered a good service.

Sure, some restrictions are annoying, and single-use registration codes are horrible and would probably be illegal if laws were made to protect customers from big businesses instead of the other way around, but it's worth putting up with for the chance to get 90% off a big bundle every Christmas.

Never have had a problem with Steam, and I've bought tons of stuff from sales, free stuff, and Carpe Fulgur releases.

Though I really should play more of the games I download, I really like the service they provide.

I don't mind the service I just dislike when games that aren't even made by Valve like Civ V and Oblivion get forced into the Steam system even when you don't want to buy DLC or anything like that for them. I mean, it's still mostly ignorable because of offline mode but bleh. Unnecessary hassle attached to playing games is never good.

the back of the Civ V box says "Internet connection and acceptance of Steam Subscriber Agreement required for activation." As does Fallout: New Vegas. I don't really mind, because the service is incredibly convenient, but it's there.

They actually likely different, and if you got stuck with it unable to play it(which would be a rare case) it's your own fault for not doing your damn research.
