-Nintendo post smaller loss than expected, get poll and people predicting their doom.
-Sony post a loss literally 10x larger, get no poll or predictions of their doom.

Ag

But seriously, Nintendo are fine. Even if they continued losing money at this rate, they shouldn't go bankrupt until the next century. Combine that with the fact that the loss was much smaller than projected and it shows that Nintendo are already recovering their losses. A hiccup, but nothing more.

^ If that is sarcasm, I have a statement.

Technically, saying 20.25% will be buying future games is wrong since another 7.##% is saying the systems will be the best selling.

If not sarcasm, I apologize for that and hope this sheds some light so that future people won't make sarcastic remarks about how 20% of one site's users will save a company.

Came in to say pretty much that. If any company is in trouble based on this last year, it'd be Sony, though I'm only assuming Microsoft is fine based on it being Microsoft.

Nintendo's brand is the strongest its ever been, posting losses at the end of one generation and on the cusp of another is fairly mundane point. The reality is they have the capital now that they've never had to take these financial risks. Whether they pay off or not will have a big bearing on them although you can only speculate on that, to suggest bankruptcy during a non-profiting prep stage of development is laughable.

Microsofts xbox division wasn't profitable during the same gap time between xbox and 360, its a pretty common trend but still seemingly doesn't stop morons believing it spells doom.

Making a "casual" system like this wouldn't work this well twice in a row, anyways. The novelty has worn off for people. You need a generation or two behind you to get that fad effect again.

In the U.S., the Nintendo 3DS has sold 4.5 million systems so far. That’s about twice the number of the original Nintendo DS, which sold 2.3 million systems in its first year in the U.S.

Can't find DS's worldwide first year numbers, but 3DS is at 17 mil now. It has been a total beast in Japan, outselling every other system on the market combined.

back in December it was reported that 3DS had sold as many units in its first 8 months than DS had in its first year. Since then 3DS had continued it's beastly ascent thanks to Monster Hunter 3G and with Monster Hunter 4 still on the horizon (and still no real Pokemon game to come out yet) there's no reason to believe the 3DS's future won't be even better what it is right now.

Monster Hunter almost single-handedly kept the PSP alive in Japan, so I'm not too certain.

And hell, the Monster Hunter game on the 3DS right now is a port of a port of Monster Hunter 3. Just imagine what will happen when MH4 comes out.

The 3DS was doing well even before Monster Hunter. The last month or so has been especially good for it with KH3D and Kid Icarus Uprising causing increases in 3DS sales and Fire Emblem having its best launch in years without even counting the bundles sold. Unfortunately for Sony the PSP is still huge in Japan to the point where barely anybody seems to care Vita even released.

That's for the entire company, though. Sony has a much higher market share. Even though Nintendo might actually be worth more (I've heard, I'm not sure), a loss for a singularly focused company is a much bigger deal.

Sony can restructure fairly easily, and get out of markets they are not profitable in if need be. Nintendo does not have that option. If they get out of the video game industry, they're essentially done.

In all honesty though, the worst case imaginable is that they'd end up as the next Sega. Even if got that bad, Nintendo will never completely die unless they decided not to live on as a third party developer.
