A Dangerous Method - 7

*sigh*

This was my most anticipated movie from last year and unfortunately it did not meet my expectations. A little dull and it jumped around too much. I did love Keira Knightley, I thought that was a great performance.

Did you like her performance during the first 10 minutes too? I thought it was very over the top.

And I agree with the rest, I was really hyped about it and I think it is sitting now in my bottom 5 of last year

Eh, it didn't seem over the top to me. But maybe that's because my parents (who are in their 60s) were watching it with me and they said that they knew crazy people when they were younger and that's how they remember them acting.

Moonrise Kingdom - 8.8/10 - Typical Wes Anderson movie, really well made, charming and hilarious. And the acting was phenomenal as well, especially Norton as the scout leader and the young actress who played Suzy.

Mystic River - 9.1/10 - Amazing movie, both morally conflicting and disturbing at the same time. I can't help but feel disappointed by the fact that Jimmy didn't get convicted by Sean at the end but that is superficial.

The Adventures of Tintin - 6.0

Great animation (why wasn't this eligible for best animated movie?) and I loved all the awesome camera angles they were using. Story was a little predictable and it felt like I was watching Uncharted 3: The Movie. Sir Frances? Check. Huge boat? Check. Stuck in the desert after the plane goes down? Check. Unfortunately I didn't really like any of the characters. Tintin seemed really clueless throughout and the two Interpol guys were horrible.

Yar, thar be minor spoilers ahead.

Prometheus - 9/10

Great film - really felt like I was watching the original 'Alien', though this was even more entertaining. More gruesome than any other film in the series, but that made it all the more interesting. Do the crew members make dumb decisions? Yes - it is in part a horror movie. As long as that sort of thing doesn't bother you too much, it shouldn't deter you from enjoying the film. And yes, as most people have said, visually it is fantastic. Perhaps best movie of the year so far.

Aliens - 6.5/10 (rewatch)

Thank the Lord James Cameron didn't write/direct Prometheus. It didn't bother me watching this as a teen, but now I can't stand some of the characters and dialogue - mainly involving the marines in the first half of the film. The story is fine and it's scary in parts, but I'll be darned if Cameron - with much assistance from Bill Paxton - didn't do his best to campify the whole thing. The action is a bit better, which helps the rating, but overall it just made me appreciate how good Prometheus is.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - 2.5/10

Wow. A wise man once told me that you shouldn't try to fit a square peg into a round hole. You'd think that when making a movie with such a ridiculous premise, you should try to execute it in a way that's fun, silly, and over-the-top. Well, these filmmakers decided it'd be better to try to work in an absolutely godawful love story, add stiff, uninteresting characters, and turn the whole movie into basically a bad biopic-drama with occasional vampire fights. This film takes itself VERY SERIOUSLY from start to finish. There was a point during dialogue between Abe & Mary Todd where I was simultaneously cringing and facepalming in the theater. Mary Elizabeth Winstead's stock as an actress just plummeted with me - I liked her in Scott Pilgrim and The Thing, but her performance as Mary Todd is borderline unbearable. A lot of it is the fault of the script, but she certainly didn't help any. Also, be ready to hear "A wise man once told me" or some variation of it about 15 times.

Am I being too harsh? Maybe. The visuals are cool at times, most of the vampire fights are decent - but the story and dialogue are nowhere near good enough for this movie to take itself as seriously as it does. I also probably dislike it more because everyone I went to see it with LIKED it and I could not understand how, but I didn't wanna be the one 'hater' so I kept my mouth shut for the most part. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Moonrise Kingdom - 8.1

Great film that is disappointing by Wes Anderson standards. Gilman and Heyward were incredible in their film debuts, and that's saying a lot given the complexity of Anderson characters throughout his films.

Sunset Boulevard - 8.4

Norma seems like one of those characters that seem impossible to act as, but Swanson was masterful in that role. I got a kick out of realizing that Swanson and Stroheim were previously paired up as main actress/director before the time of the movie both on-screen and off-screen. I could probably word that in a less confusing manner, but I won't put in the effort.

Melancholia - 5.7

Now this is a tough movie to put into words. It was a bit too long for its own good, and several aspects regarding the events of the party made absolutely no sense, even after taking into account the absurdly over-the-top state of depression that Justine was in

Going My Way - 5.8

Typical Bing Crosby musical. Priest with unconventional methods creates renewed interest in the church and changes the bond of the conventional older priest. I swear I've seen this exact plot. Now what made this film special that it won Best Picture, Best Actor, and countless other awards I have no idea. Boring and completely non-monumental

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (US) - 9/10

Incredible movie and it makes me sad that I decided to watch it before the Swedish version. I'm in love with Mara's portrayal of the character (always loved her as an actress) and even though I want to see how the rest plays out, I'm scared I won't enjoy the Swedish version as much, now that I'm familiar with Craig and Mara as the leads. I'm waiting until I can find the Blu-Ray package for a decent price as I'm in no rush to see it, but it feels like the series could turn out amazing.

Sullivan's Travels - 9.6

That was an amazing movie. Well directed and acted and funny. I enjoy the whole ultimatum of "You always end up where you belong" that he forms after eventually ending back up in Hollywood everytime he tries to run away as a hobo. The ending half with the the mugging and him going to prison while the rest of the world believes he is dead was also very entertaining and suspenseful, all while coming to a worth-while, heartwarming, and clever ending. One of my new favorite films

Spider-Man 3 - 6.3

Definitely has some significant plot holes and too many silly moments which stop it from being anywhere as good as the other two movies, but is still (for the majority part) entertaining enough to satisfy and overall okay. Hopefully, more people start turning around on this movie and realize it's not nearly as bad as the haters say it is.
