But really, most of the time, the reason Red Mages are awesome is most likely not because of their inherent power, but from skills from other classes or broken equips.

I always prefer specialists. I played a "Red Mage" (Mystic Theurge) in a DND campaign once. I got them to level 20 and when I couldn't reach 9th level spells, I was crushed (emotionally).

Yeah, personally I always roll more specialized sorts. But I'll sometimes have one tag along in a game like FFV where it's more about having fun than anything (for me).

Blue Mages in FF games are freakin' off the chain though. But yeah, Red Mages have some sexy-ass attire going on.

Yes, Prestige class that goes 10 levels. It's probably the best way to get the most spells, but it makes it impossible to get to 9th level spells. Maybe with a ton of obscure splat books or Dragon Magazine crap, but I'm not that much of a power gamer.

Erm, what instance of Golbez are you talking about? In FFIV he hardly fights, and in Dissidia he's got weird techno-beams and Doom rocks and just a little melee.

Probably books that have additional rules/loopholes that allow the MT to get the 9th level spells. Or campaigns with those rewards, not sure.

In the regular series, like many others said, A magic user that didn't lose all of his/her attack for magic. Even if the best don't exist, Red Mage at least covers mid. Range Magic.

There are fricktons of little expansion-y things for D&D. It tends to be more ridiculous and powerful than the core stuff.

Yes. Splat Books are pretty much anything beyond those and Dragon Magazine was basically a collection of poorly playtested stuff that was either useless or really overpowered. I'm not sure if there is a way to cast spells above the level you should have, but it wouldn't surprise me.

The After Years. He's a permanently playable party member there that's just amazing at melee, magic, and tanking. Running around blasting Meteor and -ga spells like maybe 90% as good as Rydia, while dishing out damage with a sword equal to Kain's normal attacks, and tanking on par with Cecil with a shield and heavy armor.

personally I don't like the FF red mage design but love the class. I usually play a bard in D&D, I like versatility.

Red Mage is totally the best FF class. It's supposed to be "jack of all trades master of none" but it's really just "really good at everything and loses some spells from the highest level that you don't really need"

Cept in FFV. FFV RM gets the short end of the stick. Think it only gets like half the spells from each magic branch instead of 85%.

Because of the dead weight White Mage this party is inferior to just grabbing 4 Red Mages. Replace it with a Red Mage or Black Mage (or Thief for style) and you're cooking, though.

They get double cast but it costs a bajillion JP (and it's a lot better combining it with like Black Mage Summoner or Time Mage or something-- Red Mage's spell selection sucks too much in FFV)

In the FF games, honestly no. not when they were actual classes anyway, they always just were instead of 'jack of all trades' just 'characters who try to do a lot but suck.'

but other games got it right. symphonia's a good example of this. generally when they're done right they're just awesome at both (yes you *could* be better in either field but they do more than enough to fulfill the role), or when they're done wrong they just plain suck. rarely do you have a case of 'in the middle' but that game was one of 'em. though the end result still gave a pretty awesome one to play as. SMT also can be very good at this, with Digital Devil Saga being another nod as Gale, while not as good as anyone else in any category, was just so balanced that he fit your anything role, and did great at it. though in a series where versitility is a necessity, i suppose jack of all trades is in the awesome level.

Which FF game are you even talking about, Wang. Like I said FFV is the only one where they don't perform up to par. FF1 they're arguably the best class behind only Fighter. The FFT Advance games they look bad on paper but they get twin cast without too much effort and the lower level spells twinned are actually better than higher level stuff.
