Nerds by my definition have a skewed work/life balance outlook constantly wanting to work or study, to learn new things and apply themselves. They typically excel at school, college and in the workplace due to the huge amount of time and effort to put into being successful, stereotypically they're associated with maths and science.

Hmm. I do associate nerds with getting good grades in school. But you can ace classes without having any actual interest in the subjects. I guess the distinction in my mind is that a geek actually has an independent interest in his area of expertise and isn't just mindlessly churning out As so he can go back to posting on gamefaqs.

Science is just applied math, so :P

But yeah, science, math, computers, and I'm sure you could think of a few others.

this is seriously fascinating. I think literally the exact opposite and have no idea how this could possibly happen. I mean, words having slightly different meanings to different people is one thing but it seems like there are two schools of thought that both have the definitions of nerd and geek switched completely (and at first I thought this was just me but some others have confirmed as well)

The trick is that the words are actually synonyms of each other, but most geeks/nerds think they are mutually exclusive and identify with only one

some kind of nerd-themed superhero? When there's a nerdmergency you rip open the top shirt to reveal your super nerd costume and save the day.

The definitions people are using ITT are pretty much completely swapped from my point of view.

while this might be true I feel like even most synonyms have very slight differences is meaning. it's not often you have two words that mean the EXACT same thing regardless of context.

Well yeah, but as you can see from this topic, people strongly believe they are mutually exclusive, which is kind of strange for synonyms

I guess that's true.

but I mean, I don't have a strong opinion on the subject -- I wouldn't care if someone called me a geek OR a nerd (or told me that I didn't qualify for either, or one or the other). it's sort of hard to tell if anyone who has posted has a 'strong' opinion on the matter (many people just answered 'yes' or 'no' with me having to drag a full answer out of them), but I'm sure at least some of them do.

let's use wikipedia's wonderful definition

Nerd is a derogatory slang term for a person typically described as intellectual, socially-impaired, and obsessive who spends inordinate amounts of time on unpopular, obscure, or highly technical pursuits, or relating to topics of fiction or fantasy, to the exclusion of more mainstream activities.

i'm not socially impaired but everything else fits, so i guess?

I'm gonna say no. I mean, I certainly have many interests that would be called nerdy or geeky or whatever and I consider myself smart. But at the same time I don't consider myself socially inept, obsessive (this I'll admit is borderline-- I mean we're all on a message board about a game character contest so if your definition of obsessive isn't loose we could all be considered obsessive just on that), or excessively smart (if that even matters). And I have a lot of interests in things that are socially acceptable too.

I don't really think about the specifics in the difference between geek and nerd but if I ever jokingly call myself one I go with nerd every time. Geek just sounds more gross.

So I guess I'd go with the venn diagram definition but swap geek and nerd.

Here is how I break things down...

Nerd: Someone who has a high level of book intelligence and actually enjoys using it in a work/academic setting. Will often be socially awkward. Smart, but usually has to work a bit for it.

Geek: Someone with alarming knowledge of something AND SHOWS/BRAGS about it everywhere. Might or might not be smart. However a geek's "expertise" might make it seem like they actually know what they are talking about. Also, the hobbies that qualify for geekdom constantly changes as things become more or less mainstream. Nowadays, unless your like super obsessed, videogames probably would not count. Socially normal except for whatever his area of expertise is in.

So, I probably approach Geek a bit, but I don't think I'm quitethere.

I'm a secret nerd.

Not in the sense that I hide my nerdiness, I mean I'll talk about anything if it's relevant to the conversation and I won't hesitate to hide my love for jRPGs and the like... but I don't look or act like a nerd so most people just never find out. I'm just as into pop culture and crap that nerds typically hate as I am into nerdy stuff.

I really just like everything.
