I was actually planning on making this topic on another forum but when I got home today I saw that someone else had already done something pretty similar (by sheer coincidence) so I figure I will ask board 8 instead

do you consider yourself to be a nerd?

also, what definition of nerd are you using?

so going by this theoretical split in definition, geeks are more social while nerds are actually smarter

does that mean you guys prefer to think of yourselves as being more 'social' than 'smart'? or would you rather be more smart than social but you don't consider yourself smart enough to be a 'nerd'?

I always figured a nerd was someone who studied or read books to an extreme amount, to the point where they have no social life

I always saw myself as a geek (I used to be pretty closet about my interests but I don't care anymore)

Geek
1. An unfashionable or socially inept person.
2. A person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest: "a computer geek".

definitely the second part, as my interests do not hinder my social life

also since the discussion is already rolling I will reveal my personal definitions on the matter. I think a 'nerd' is defined by obsessive devotion to a particular interest, and I could see how nerds might be considered to be 'smarter' since they are usually dedicated to learning a lot (about a particular topic) and typically have a fairly high intelligence that aids them in their obsession. its funny that the given definition for geek was that they are more 'social' because to me, a 'geek' is someone who basically lacks in social skills due to focusing their time on a particular hobby rather than interacting with people. they don't have to be obsessively knowledgeable about it like a nerd would be.

over the last two or so years I've developed into a bit of what I would consider a 'nerd', although it hasn't affected my social life.

oh and one of the big distinctions I find there is that

nerd = knowledgeable about a particular subject (can be a hobby but it's also possible to be a math 'nerd' for example)
geek = more related to a hobby (can't just be ANY subject, has to be a hobby)

Not really. But what I consider a nerd, most people don't fit. So it may just be that.

what do you consider to be a nerd then?

I remember the first time I considered someone to be a true "nerd", it was a guy that I used to know in high school but I never thought this way about him until much later. he always used to hang out with the kids who were into video games and PC gaming in particular, so I just assumed he was another one of that group who were basically just gaming hobbyists. actually much later I ended up working with him on a job in the field of PC repair and I found out that he isn't really into gaming at all, he just hung out with those guys because he had fun helping them set up their LAN parties since none of them really knew about computers. stuff like that because to him the idea of working on computers was just fun. more fun than the actual games that were being played.

to me a nerd is someone who takes a computer science class and actually pays attention and tries to get a good grade, while a geek is someone who takes the class because they want to learn 'how to make video games'

this friend of mine was one of the first people I ever ran into in who I considered to fall into that former category

Yeah, I am.

A nerd is someone who generally likes "nerd things" (video games, science fiction, roleplaying, anime), is generally uninterested in "non-nerd things" (playing sports, watching sports, parties, drinking), and is socially awkward. That's pretty nebulous but offhand I can't think of a way to define the line between "nerd things" and "non-nerd things."

A geek is a nerd who is skilled at math, science, and/or computers.

Is it? My first association with the word "geek" is the kind of guy who builds his own computers and basically knows everything about them. Whereas a stereotypical nerd sits in his room all day doing nerdy things but doesn't necessarily have to be good at any of them.

Nerds by my definition have a skewed work/life balance outlook constantly wanting to work or study, to learn new things and apply themselves. They typically excel at school, college and in the workplace due to the huge amount of time and effort to put into being successful, stereotypically they're associated with maths and science.

Geeks are the ones into anime, video games, message board posting etc.
