There isn't really a difference on Capcom's side other than probably cheaper and faster distribution for on disc DLC. From our side, on-disc DLC suggests the possibility that the content was finished beforehand and withheld. On Capcom's side, they already know exactly when everything was finished regardless of where the content is. It's just more content tor them to sell.

Not surprised considering they chose to release it the same week as one of the most hyped games of the year.

Hmm. Yeah, gotta go with paulg235 on that one. Now that I think about it, not terribly surprising.

I wonder if Capcom thought it wouldn't matter because ME3 would only go on to sell like 8k in its first week over there, so surely it's not so big a deal? Or they just figured, more likely, that they were two separate player bases and there was enough wiggle room to do alright.

Of course, if the Japanese numbers also sucked, that's a problem.

it doesn't have an arcade release so Japan doesn't care much

they didn't plan for it to do great there anyway though, for that very reason.

Spot on.

It's a matter of perception. The company knows whether or not the content is done and is doing what it can to make selling it simpler. The consumer only knows what Capcom is willing to show us. If those characters were done and kept off the disc, we wouldn't know any better and feel that we had gotten our money's worth. With on-disc DLC, consumers feel like they're being robbed blind, even though the difference is simply where Capcom chose to store the data.

Granted, Capcom lied on at least one occasion about the status of SFxT's DLC, so I can't sympathize with them at this point.

joyrock has this mental deficiency where he has to argue about everything

but it's not like "let's discuss our viewpoints and see what comes of it" it's like "there is an objective truth and I happen to be right about everything and I will argue it into the ground while being condescending the whole time"

as a side bonus, if he recognizes your name from past discussions there will be an added "this disagreement that you are objectively wrong about actually is indicative of a great personality flaw that you have. it says something horrible about your character that you disagree with me."

I'm not sure if I like him more than our resident journalist, they're pretty close

in any case (on-topic) one of my links is a quote from Sven talking about how they were unhappy with the sales and expected better for UMvC3. in the context of what I replied to (where jeff was saying that people complain a lot and then go buy the game anyway) I think it's worth mentioning. there's at least some people who are saying "omg f*** capcom" and then really do just not buy the next game.

The logic is that the DLC is meant to bring attention back to the game months after release. It seems counter intuitive because DLC sales dwindle in the months after a game's release, but then, this isn't a map pack or something only people who are dedicated to the game will care about, this is a chunk of the roster.

I just borrowed the game from a friend and I'm already bored of the game. It's like the worst blend of offense and defense. It's extremely hard to open people up and once you do it's a 40% combo, or if you want to actually attack you could just pick Rufus or Kazuya, two of the most annoying characters. Online is just awful, you see the same people over and over again with the same shotos and Mishimas.

"DLC" isn't gonna help extend the game's life if so many people are done with the game before the first month.

DLC out at launch: "Man SFxT is fun! Play as Dudley, Guy, and all these other dudes? Hell yes I'll buy this!"
DLC out 6 months later: "DLC for SFxT? Who even plays that game anymore."

Not sure why you'd want to "bring attention to a game" when you could "get people's money" instead!

According to my buddy who works for marketing for EA, he's stated that DLC sales drop incredibly so after the first month of release, which is why they tend to keep DLC closer to release rather than later.

I think Capcom's idea was that they wanted to include a super version of their game, but they didn't want to put out another version of the game and just wanted to send out whatever was there. The problem is that for the people who would buy DLC for it, IE the hardcore fighting gamers, they all kind of hate SFxT now, much to their surprise. Soooo... they're kind of stuck.

(Btw, my buddy is looking to get out of that job because as you might imagine, EA marketing kind of sucks.)

yeah that all sounds about right. people complain that it's hard to get in, but also that anti-airs suck. and that it's a defensive game but there's braindead offense with crossups and standing jab pressure and weird mixups that don't look right and those all lead to big damage. in truth all of those things are there. it's hard to open people up but once you do big damage is the result. it sets up a weird dynamic where a 99 second round is decided in a short amount of time, often off one or two mistakes. it just doesn't feel good.

as far as the DLC goes supposedly they were trying to keep people interested throughout the year. just when you forgot about this game, here's 3 new color packs! I think the big takeaway from SFxT DLC is the big PR hits Capcom keeps taking because of it.

To me, paying to unlock things already on the disc isn't DLC at all. We're basically paying twice for one complete game. If this were an RPG and you had to pay for party members or sections of the game on the disc, people would be furious and rightfully so. Why should having to pay for a chunk of the roster on a fighting game disc be deemed acceptable?

Folks that defend Capcom and this practice, fine. Enjoy paying more for stuff. But I'd have to say you are in a strange minority.

Capcom gone from reusing sprites to reusing models, hell quite a few of the Tekken characters are model sharing with Street Fighters (Kazuya has Ryu's body, Julia has Cammy's , Marduk has Hakan's ect)

Actually you're in the minority because where the DLC comes from or when it arrives is irrelevant. It's DLC. You aren't paying extra for a complete game, you're paying extra for extra features since you already got a complete game. Being on the disc doesn't change anything - it doesn't mean you own it, or that you're entitled to it.
