You can hook SOME PCs to SOME TVs
there are seriously people who don't use HDTVs still?

Quite a few, and even when you DO use them, it's significantly more complicated and restrictive to hook your PC up to your TV(moreso for older PCs) than your console, and the results aren't really any better for movie watching/streaming.

Mind you, I'm not saying hooking them up is worthless. It's damn awesome. It's just that, in the situation, consoles have a distinct advantage.

Actually, more people use their 360s (and probably PS3s) for that other stuff - http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2012/03/xbox-more-entertainment-gaming-hbo-go-comcast-xfinity-mlb.html

I stand corrected! that seems weird to me, but hey to each their own. I'd definitely rather just use my computer myself.

I did respond. And corrected you rather simply.

You're not complaining about games, you're complaining about consoles, and in this case consoles have GREATER functionality than they did a decade ago. By far. You're complaining because you want your one portion of it to not have any sacrifices whatsoever for the sake of functionality of the other portions. Given that you're talking about the main purpose of consoles, it would be reasonable if the sacrifice you're complaining about weren't so laughably minor.

You're spoiled because you're complaining about a two minute wait max. There is no getting around or denying that.

most of my games, all my music, and DVD rips of my movie collection are sitting on my computer. got all my work-related stuff there too. Hulu bookmarked and I'm all good.

I do keep a CRT around to have my PS2 and 360 connected, but that's pretty much it.

You're not most people, though.

You can't deny that watching on a TV while sitting on a couch with friends around is better, and while awesome, hooking your PC to your TV is more complicated and restrictive than using your console for said movies.

don't you have everything hooked up through your monitor? okay, that makes sense for why you'd rather launch things through windows. but a lot of people have their monitor and HDTV separate, and need Netflix, Hulu, MLB.tv etc apps optimized for an HDTV on a number of devices.

I did for a while, but gave up on it. I've bought a lot of games for 360 but pretty much play none of them except SF4 a little bit and 3S a lot. 3S looks and plays better on CRT anyway so I end up just leaving my 360 connected to my CRT. only my computer is hooked up to my monitor now.

but anyway yeah I can see where there'd be a need for that. my room is relatively small and my futon is close to my computer so my 22" monitor works out as a do everything station. most people I know seem to have the TV and the computer as separate spaces (often in separate rooms) though so it makes sense that a game console would fill that need.

I wonder if at some point people are just going to connect their phones to their 40" HDTVs and that'll serve the same purpose.

yeah, i only use my consoles for games. i'm aware that other people don't, but that doesn't make it any less annoying that it takes way longer to start up a game than it ever did before. also a two minute wait adds up to a lot when you sum it over all the times you're ever going to boot up a console. suppose you do so once a day for 5 years - that's over 60 hours of waiting. it's not trivial to complain about at all.

What's this "2 minute wait" garbage? I thought we were complaining about the new dashboard making everything harder to get to so they can show you more ads. Like Netflix/Hulu are buried deeper in the menus, the Games Marketplace and your game library is buried deeper, browsing your library is more of a chore, looking through your friends list is more annoying, the Netflix interface is more cumbersome...

It wouldn't matter if the new dashboard loaded up instantly, it's still a worse interface once it gets there.

It doesn't take two minutes to start up a game on the PS3. It's closer to about 15 seconds from the time you turn on the console, unless we're specifically talking about the 360 and not next-gen consoles in general.

It should also be easy to see the convenience of a console that can play games, movies, and streaming services like Netflix and Hulu with most people's setups. You might be the unique person who connects their PC to their 50-inch HDTV, but most don't!

just tested to see

turned on Steam downloading a game, then turned on my 360. from the time I pushed the power button to the time I was on the dashboard was about 1:15. so that's definitely shorter than my 2 minute estimate.

that 1:15 got me to the dashboard with an error code about not being able to sign in. so presumably if I played a console that requires you to always be online, I'd still be out of luck. for online games that doesn't matter, I wouldn't be able to play online anyway with the internet in use like that. but for a single player game, that would kind of suck!

on the bright side, if you can't sign in to XBL the games from this gen consider you offline and don't try to talk to a server or whatever most of the time. so you can shave about 30 seconds off the "get to the main menu" time for a game like 3S for example.

if you get the worst possible outcome it's that your 360 will connect to XBL despite the lag. so you wait that ~1:15 and you've got another long wait as whatever game you choose goes through the motions as well.

As one of the two people on this board who suffered through Heroes of Might and Magic 6, always-online in a bad company's hands is pretty much the worst designing tool ever. You guys should read up on Ubisoft's handling of that game some time.

I just went to the Ubisoft forums to check it out. on the first page, this topic:

how do i get my money back for a product that should have never been released?

i have been a huge fan of homm, i have every release to date... but i am rather disappointed ubisoft released homm 6 before it was ready.
the same thing happened with masters of the univerise 3, and it is still unplayable and never will be.

i would like to know how i can get my money back for this product that should never have been released yet?

Hi poweraxis, the contact us details are here http://www.ubi.com/UK/Info/Info.aspx?tagname=ContactUs ensure the page is on your region. Alternatively you can contact technical support, the link is in my signature.

Technical Support- http://support.ubisoft.com/
Twitter Support- https://twitter.com/#!/ubisoftsupport
Facebook Support- https://www.facebook.com/

ok, first off i asked how can i get my money back, not where do i get tech support... you gave me a link to a european phone number, i am in the united states.

this game is bugged, and may never work for all i know... personally i think it was very bad business to release a game that was so bugged it wouldnt even load on some systems, and the ones that it did load on had more issues than would be considered acceptable.

i dont want tech help at this point... I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!

Hi poweraxis

Unfortunately Ubisoft does not have a money back guarantee for customers that do not like the game. There is not a way to get a refund through the publisher.

Yeah 2 minutes isn't a big deal because you just half occupy yourself with something else while it's booting or you spend that time getting hyped or whatever. Most systems, including your PC, take a while to boot anyway this isn't a new development. Even as far back as the NES you spend at least 2 minutes doing random startup tricks to try and get your game to work most of the time <_<

I'm gonna bring this discussion back to where we started

we were talking about how always online DRM will potentially be bad for customers, especially people with bad internet. you can kind of see this with Steam but there's ways to alleviate that there, so they don't catch too much flak. then we settled into how long it takes the 360 to boot up and whether it's worth it. but that seems like an aside to the discussion.

if you're happy with your 51 seconds to get into Castle Crashers, or if joyrock would be happy with the 3-4 minutes it takes me to get to a menu screen in my favorite fighting game, great. you can buy the next gen of consoles I guess, and presumably it won't bother you. but it does bother me that what used to take about 30 seconds on PS2 takes 3-4 minutes on 360, and it seems reasonable to believe that always online consoles will not improve the situation.

it will definitely factor into what console I buy (if any) next gen. just one piece of the decision, but part of it for sure. I suspect that's true for a fair amount of people.

I bought a wireless router, it didn't work. Thankfully I was able to get my money back on it. Still online always isn't reliable for everyone, and some people don't even have high speed internet yet.

I think the Wii is more annoying as far as getting a game started going. Though there's probably an option to run from start that I'm missing. You have to get the cursor (which sometimes works, and sometimes it doesn't)

And then if you want multiplayer (which most wii games are) sometimes you can go through it 2 and 3 times to get the remotes read properly.

Well I'm not saying it's not preferable to boot up quicker of course.

I just think boot up load time is the most insignificant part of the whole equation to bump up because you can just start booting, continue what you were doing before you start to get immersed in the game or totally distracted or whatever. Like I've had moments where I want to play a game and I have to download 45 minutes of updates to play it and it's not even a huge deal because I just continue what I was doing until it finishes (obviously I'm not saying 45 minutes would be an acceptable boot time, but you know what I mean).

It's not like in game loading or something where you're decisively "in the zone to play the game" and then you have to sit for a minute while an area loads up.

Basically I guess what I'm saying is if I'm going to have any sort of performance issue I'd want it to be there.
