The benefit is that it gives you 10 N7 levels and allows you to keep increasing that level by continuously promoting. And it's a way to respec a class as well. Save up for Spectre. Get skill, learn how to play Gold. With luck, you'll find some good players and you'll be able to get through a match. Quarian Infiltrator and Sabotage does great work. I use a shotgun. I don't do a lot of damage, but it's a fantastic support role and I've saved the day quite a few times before.
