Sounds interesting. Is the book better?

Yeah, except in Hunger Games the corrupt government making all the kids go through this stuff is actually important in the later two books in the trilogy.

I've never read Battle Royale, but I got the impression that the back story was just an excuse to get kids on an island killing each other.

The last book is a pile of dog turds glued together, but you're about right.

Haven't seen the movie, but regardless only the first book in the series is really worth reading. Second one wasn't that great and third was awful.

I might watch the movie tomorrow though and post thoughts.

the funny thing is that an american battle royale film has been in an out of development for years and if it ever actually gets made now it will be seen as a ripoff lol

The movie is almost exactly like the book (only covers the first one), and is really good.
The book gives you more insight into what the main character is thinking/feeling at a particular moment. My only concern with the movie is that if someone hasn't read the book they might not "get" what's happening with the main relationship in the story (again, first book).

Just got back from watching it.

It was pretty decent. Good representation of the book. Definitely worth watching.

Yeah, it kinda sucks. Rarely do I think that foreign movies should receive an American remake when I really only the original movie.. but after watching Battle Royale I was quite eager to see what it would be like from our cultural standpoint. I pretty much forgot all about that movie until now, and it's pretty surprising that it hasn't been made yet.

Having read Battle Royale a long while ago and then recently reading the hunger games trilogy and seeing the movie, in my opinion, Hunger Games > Battle Royale. It just has a lot more to it then BR does.

So why does everyone hate the third book?

It took two books worth of good characters and made nearly all of them bad and/or dead.

I think Battle Royale was a much better read than Hunger Games. I haven't seen either of the movies.

I got about 100 pages into the third Hunger Games book and I just couldn't take it anymore. It was clear from the beginning that the author was writing for a teenage audience, but I knew that going into it. Still, it was readable enough until the third book when I just couldn't stomach how seriously the author was taking it all, despite the premise being completely absurd and the characters not being written very believably.

What I liked about Battle Royale is that, although it was also a completely absurd premise and no doubt the author also took his work seriously, it came off to me as over-the-top enough to just be enjoyable for enjoyment's sake.

It might just be how I allowed myself to perceive the two stories that made the difference in how I liked them. I liked Hunger Games enough until the third book. I looked at Hunger Games as having more of an agenda, even if that's not necessarily true, and I saw Battle Royale as just being a fun action story as long as it wasn't taken too seriously.

I guess I'm not surprised at how popular Hunger Games has become considering its target audience. I heard people say it's going to be even better than the Twilight series!

I still don't get why people hate the third book so much.

I'd rather have that over the second's bad pacing.

edit: I should make my Hunger Games book inequality my sig.

Honestly, I think the Hunger Games would have been better as just one book instead of a trilogy. The second book was pretty much just a rewrite of the first book and the third book (or what I read from it) was driving the point home too much and really just prolonging the story for no good reason. We already got the point from the first book. I don't feel like I needed to be constantly slapped in the face with all the propaganda.

The Hunger Games being a trilogy just caused it to overstay its welcome, if you ask me.

Honestly, I loved the third book. I thought it was perfect in terms of raising the stakes for the entire series.

Yeah, the second book, in my opinion, tried to play it safe.

The second book definitely felt like filler in that it basically repeated book 1, while setting the stage for book 3. Also, it introduced the two best characters in the series.

Mason/Odair 2012!

Eh, the second book...I didn't see too much good in it. I've been in roleplays about The Quarter Quell much better than Catching Fire, but Mockingjay is still my least favorite in the series.

And Battle Royale is with Gone in books I have yet to read. I'm 14, but I can handle these two...right?
