One of the advantages anime has over other expressive mediums, it seems to me, is that you can bend the rules of reality with great ease. Just got finished with a rewatch of 2001, and I'm in the mood for something dark, violent, and psychologically disturbing. Can anyone recommend me something along these lines?
For the record, I'm hardly an anime guy, but I have seen DBZ, Death Note, and Gurren Lagann (and am currently watching Fist of the North Star; completely awesome).

elfen lied is also good, it's much more violent than higurashi or really...almost anything else I've ever seen, ever. but not quite as disturbing to me
this is the way to define Higurashi. so that one. it's also mercifully not boring like half the others that go for dark and psychologically disturbing, or bad like a good amount of those that remain.
also, School Days is the 2nd thing to come to mind. you'l love it. or hate it.

Yeah monsters not what you would call Dark but it is intensely psychological.

Yeah, problem solved. I guess I watched the first episode of Rei? It was pretty awesome either way! Anyway.
Higurashi [Actual] Episode 1
I was already tangentially introduced to the characters through my unfortunate (fortunate?) chance encounter with Higurashi Rei, but it was nice to see them in a serious context. This show seems to do a wonderful job bouncing back and forth between lighthearted, character-building scenes and darker, mysterious ones. I'm impressed so far.
As to this mystery that's being built up? I feel that the red-headed chick is too obvious a candidate. She's quirky, and they're making to sure to emphasize that she seems "different." The closing shot of her walking with the axe only adds to the red herring factor. But we'll see!

Alright, now I'm buying into my red-hair-is-red-herring theory even more. Protip: when they try to force a character on you as suspicious early on into a mystery, that person is almost always looking out for the protagonist. My money's on Green: she's older, probably knows more about the town, and is using her age and influence to control the actions of the group.
Really captivating show so far. Wish I had more to say, but I'm sure that'll pick up before too long.

Things really starting to pick up. So it seems as though the entire group is involved in some way? Interesting. I'm sort of getting an end-of-Monster vibe, with the small town dynamic (those who have seen the anime will know what I'm talking about).
My favorite part about this episode, and what makes it the best so far, is the definite (and seemingly permanent) tonal shift. No more halcyon days with the School Club; no more innocent games; just mystery and paranoia. Watching this show at six in the morning only adds to the experience. As for the characters... hate them all, in a good way. I deeply sympathize with Keiichi and am very suspicious of just about everyone else (including the younger girls), which I suppose is the point. Fosters fear even for the viewer.
One small thing: I was promised violence, so I hope we get some violence coming up! Would really add to the tension.

most of it is still disturbing until later on, and it is still disturbing in the end that there's that one guy that is openly coming on to children and everyone is totally ok with it
wtf japan
there is some violence but it's not the most intensely graphic thing ever, it's mostly psychological horror...which is added to by a certain novelty this series has

Well, I think I goofed. Upon going from episode 4 to episode 5, I was completely confused about what the hell was going on, so I used Google to make sure I didn't miss anything obvious and... sort of ruined the show. Whoops. I really should have asked here first, damn. Seems really interesting with all the *SPOILERS*
time loop stuff and whatnot, as well as the god actually existing.
*END SPOILERS*
I assume this makes the anime not so much worth watching, yeah? Unfortunate.

Well, here's a laundry list of what was spoiled. Let me know if it's still worth continuing:
*SPOILERS*
-everything revolves around a series of time loops -by the end of the second season, everybody remembers and uses this awareness to defeat Tanako, who's been responsible for the loops -the ability to redo things was given by the Shrine God, who exists on a higher plane
*END SPOILERS*
If I did indeed ruin this baby beyond repair, then any other suggestions for what to watch next would be great.

Oh whelp knowing that second thing beforehand kind of blows. The other two aren't that big a deal.
I don't know if I'd say it's ruined beyond repair. Watching the first season at the play out should still be good even knowing all of that. I've forgotten exactly how the second season goes and what you're supposed to know at that point so I won't speak on that.

Honestly, I'm just going to make a judgment call and pass on this one. Trust me, I am really disappointed. Had I the sense ahead of time, I would've vented my frustrations with the episode 4-5 jump here just to make sure things would work out in the end. (By the way, I've seen the infamous execution scene previously, so nothing missed there.)
So what should I jump to next? Higurashi's put me in the mood for something with a similarly complex plot, but the dark/disturbing stuff is still a priority too. At the very least, this Higurashi experience has shown than B8 knows good anime!

still worth watching IMO, each arc leaves a few questions that are answered in other arcs, really you only ruined the end of the second season I think where it started getting worse ANYWAY
actually there seems to be a really major plot point missing from that summary, if that's all you know definitely watch at least the first season and maybe the first few arcs of the second(the very end is ruined though, yes)
still watch. the journey matters more than the end here, especially as the end doesn't completely make sense (still better at it than Umineko by a lot however). but what the hell how'd you spoil so much.

The King Wang. Listen up Urinal Cake. I already have something that tells me if I'm too drunk when I pee on it: My friends. - Colbert.
and yeah, the only thing that really matters which you spoiled was the 2nd one. 1st you figure out real quick, 3rd is 'whatever.' if anything since you know the ending and can't just... forget it, go for clues. but the show's strong point is how ****ed up everything gets. quitting without even watching episode 4 is a big mistake there. <_<;

he did watch 4, episode 5 is the start of the second arc. if that summary is all he knows though then he is missing the other major mechanic entirely too...
Great pilot episode. Opening scene really hooks you in, animation is great, violence is crisp and enjoyably excessive, and the premise seems promising. On the downside, dialogue's a little stilted, but seems less character-driven and more action-driven, so it's acceptable!

P.S. I miss Higurashi :(

Pretty badass getting to see Lucy come back in full force, but I'm worried that the anime is going to devolve into protagonist-remains-oblivious mode for the next several episodes. Speaking of which, his total naivete makes it hard for me to care about him, and I find myself siding against Nyuu instead of with her. Was this intentional? Not sure. Still, the violence and unique action are enough to warrant this one a decent score.
6/10
I might jump back to Higurashi in a while. I'm just furious that I spoiled what seems like an incredible plot for myself simply out of impatience; I'm normally above that sort of thing. If I do, however, it might not be for a while. March Madness baby!
