Oh yeah, I should probably point out that digital distribution is without question the way of the future. The thing is just that consoles don't have the mechanics of it down yet, so there's bound to be a bumbling failure or two before anyone even comes close to touching what Steam's been doing for years now. If Microsoft tries to make the first move here, they'll no doubt be the bumbling failure that everyone else takes precautions based on.

Yeah, average internet speeds being as slow as they are pretty much rules this out. I imagine they'll just carry on doing what they've been doing and offer a digital version alongside the retail version.

And I'm dreading the day digital distribution becomes the norm.

(to the above poster, when two consoles have 99.5% the same libraries it's silly to say one is useless, and personally I prefer Mass Effect. But that kinda topic has been discussed plenty)

This is where the future is headed, we all know it whether we dig it or not. So, assuming this is true for the next Xbox...

Well, I'll most likely still get it. But, I will say if games still go for $60 dollars new on their download platform, I will not go for it. 50 bucks, yeah I'll go for it. They're cutting out so many costs, and they've got legions of people paying for Xbox live gold anyway.

When this does become the norm for all consoles, whether ten years from now or what, it'll kill game rental, used games, retailers... it's crazy. But, well, pretty much unavoidable, and well... good for the planet, on some scale, so yeah.

Pretty much just means Amazon gets less of my money. But if Microsoft doesn't give me some of those savings they're getting cutting out middlemen, well no thanks.

Also, as for whether it's true... well, for games like Mass Effect 3 swapping 2 discs often for open world games is a mild hassle. So either upping to blu-ray (money in Sony's pocket) or going download/install only seem like the only options for next gen.

^Most new games on Steam go for $50 new, but more and more lately have been going for the full $60. Though that is because Steam does take some of the profit. I guess a better comparison is Origin, where yes, EA does take all $60 of your money. <_<

I also don't think game rental will be hit too much - or at least, it won't change as much. Redbox's selection is pitiful and other places that offer it such as Blockbuster are going out of business for other reasons. The only other thing is GameFly, which could very easily be handled via an app to rent or stream games digitally. I think they've actually started doing something like that with PC and Steam.

Game retailers and used games would take a huge hit if everything was digital...that or they'd have to become niche stores that are forced to offer a wider selection of old games. Goodbye GameStop, hello Play N Trade.

Still I doubt that Microsoft would go all-in on this from the start. I don't think people are ready for that yet (just look at the replies in this topic).

I think it would be incredibly stupid for them to go with DVD again since they're already using multiple discs for larger games right now. I think even some form of proprietary cartridge would make more sense than that... and would be nice for load times.

The DVD option is not optimal, but with installing it'd be just like PC games for years where you pop in all the discs once and then you're done. A huge GB cartridge or flashcard or whathaveyou would be epically expensive to produce, so I don't see that happening.

I also don't see the blu-ray thing happening, so pretty much I don't doubt them focusing on this download idea, and maybe offering installs with DVDs as an alternative.

Ahh, I could see that. I was thinking of installs like they do currently on PS3/360. Still, I hate the fact that once the game is installed you still need to have the disc in the system, but I guess they have to combat piracy somehow.

It is pretty silly yeah, especially for games with multiple discs. But really, PC games figured that out back on CDs decades ago, just have disc one in for the anti-piracy purposes. The current way they do has definitely gotta go next gen.

I'm a huge proponent of full digital distribution for consoles in the future, and I think that's where they are going for sure, but for a console there should (and will, because this is fake) be a physical option for people who can't or don't have internet.

It's not like handhelds where you need to worry about size of the device and battery life. You can have a fully digital system, AND a disk drive.

There's a bit more to it than that. I know DVD is a standard owned by a larger combination of companies including Sony from years back, I'm assuming the licensing is way cheaper. Also, since 360 went for HD DVD and thus Microsoft was actively doing their part to try and stop blu-ray from being successful, I just don't see them wanting to go blu-ray.

Really, there are a lot of options.

Although, I do believe that Valve is still selling their PC games for $50. IIRC Portal 2 was.

No it wouldn't.

GoG.com does digital distribution primarily for smaller games with no DRM.

Microsoft would be doing it for much larger games, and DRM would be required to prevent someone from just loaning an account to a friend.

Whether Steam's been at it or not - I absolutely could not buy a next gen console with online distribution only. I mean I love online distribution on Steam but that's with moderately sized games, mostly under 10GB.

The bigger PS3 games can already take out a third of my bandwidth, and that's just Gen 7.
