I just glanced at the first page and I see topics by BrettEagles, ScorpionX3, SHINE, Shadowhalo, Sir Cobain, SA128, Inviso, Princess Anri, Ayuyu, Weaku, Grapefruitking, Grand Kirby, RPGLord, BIGPUN, Menji, Wanglicious, l3fty, Anagram, Ed Bellis, Leonhart, Pianist, DpOblivion, Ry Senkari, CrimsonOcean, GenesisTwilight, Biolizard, Wiggs, Ulti, Zachnorn, XIII, Mzero, and Vlado.
32 of the 50 topics are names I recognize, and at least half of those I know from 7 years ago. And since some of those guys had multiple topics on the first page, it's really closer to 80% of the topics made by old timers. So I'm just curious, do you guys that are here after all these years feel like the place has stagnated or degraded over time? Or is it still the same place you've always loved?
If you guys wouldn't mind sparing a couple sentences, I'm genuinely curious about this. Anecdotally speaking, most online communities I've been a part of have fallen apart or completely changed by this time - either all the old timers left, or there was such an influx of new users you can't really recognize the old guard.

The board feels like it's stagnated, yeah, but I'm too addicted to this place to leave now! I tried it once by closing my main. that didn't work out so well.

I'm totally jaded now. I've lost interest in all of the little board contests and in like... putting any effort into my own posts, but I keep coming here because I've been here for like eight years and I still want to know what's going on.

It's stagnated a bit, but I still love it. There's I think a biiiit more turnover than you're giving credit for- several of my old favorite people are here rarely to never, and there are still a good handful of folks I don't really know yet, but there are fairly awesome newish folks too.
Would have to agree with 13fty, though. Sometimes I miss a good redxiin or shakespeare.

I used to totally get into that drama and trolling stuff but I feel like I've grown past it. When I hop on the internet and log in to one of my communities I'm looking for fellowship and discussion, and trolling just takes away from that.

i don't think it's stagnated at all. if anything i've gotten along with more people due to common interests being known and posting away in it, and there's a good overlap all around here. will say that the board's certainly gotten older and it shows.

Or maybe sometimes people just don't have **** to do and start thinking of ways, other than self-abuse, to amuse themselves. I already stared at the spot on the wall, trying to determine if it was a smashed bug or dirt speck, for 25 minutes so I decided to come here next.
If you're wondering why we don't get new users, that's easy. Gamefaqs has the best systems in place to keep away new users, and this board especially is hidden most of the time. Then, our board's style is very unique and new people who try to treat us like reddit or 4chan or even CE/potd will just never understand how we work. You need to be very adaptive to get used to this board, and that is rare.
As for why old people stay, it's probably because we are extremely diverse and love arguments, which means there is a steady supply of deep discussion about a huge variety of topics, as well as drama that creates positive and negative relationships between users, which keeps them interested in the board. It also helps that we're really knowledgeable about games and the internet, so the board is a great source of game news and discussion, which is why I personally stay.

There might have been a few people leaving, but there's no newcomers. The newest user I can think of is Nio, and I'm pretty sure she's been here since before the contest.

There's a ton of new users, they just don't have strong enough personalities to get recognized or remembered.

I think more than that what really makes the difference is if the user is basically a full time troll like strahax who adds literally nothing to the board and is basically a garbage poster or someone who actually contributes to topics for reasons beyond trolling on occasion.

Only a few new users are memorable enough to be, well, remembered, so the board is like 50% people who were here seven years ago, yeah. I just really enjoy B8, I can't really put into words why. There are individual users I dislike, but as a whole, I find the board a good place to spend my time.
