This would be incredible as long as they don't require me to be online for games I own on a disc.

here's what it needs to hook me:

standard controller (the mix and match sounds interesting but it needs to be completely functional)
console level input lag instead of PC level input lag

and I think that's pretty much it. but it's saying that you can run everything from Steam? which makes it sound like it's just gonna be a console running Windows or something. unless I missed something. if that's the case, might as well keep using my PC.

the "manufacturers can make their own version of the console" thing sounds sketchy too. that didn't work out well for the last people who tried it.

If it basically takes PC gaming and turns it into a console experience I would buy it day one. A sleek and centralized UI, no fiddling with installations or configurations, no "hmm I think this game will run on my PC but maybe it won't but maybe it will," no excuses for bugs that are rampant on PC games because it's impossible to test all of the billions of different ways people have combined thousands of graphics cards and RAM and operating systems.

Looks cool. The description makes it sound pretty much like a PC, and that's it, but all consoles nowadays are approaching that point anyways.

I guess Valve just wants to get the huge market of gamers that are patently opposed to PC gaming for no good reason, by disguising a PC as a console. Should work pretty well, especially if since the hardware isn't proprietary, the price won't be too high.

The only problem I can see is that Steam works on a PC because it's always on. You're browsing the internet or watching videos, and Steam is in the background. That allows the background downloading and updating systems to work so that when you actually want to play your game, it is fully updated, and also makes the social stuff work. If it's on a box that is only on when you want to play a game, the experience could be a lot worse.

Huh.... honestly, this sounds pretty nice. Buy one copy of a game and either play it comfortably on my PC, or play it on my console. And if I've gotten lax on keeping my PC's video card updated or something, hey, I didn't just waste $15 on Crysis 2 after all. But a console costs a lot just for convenience.

My main issue at this point is that I really only buy consoles for the exclusives. Multiplatform titles like Mass Effect? Meh, I've got a PC. What sells me on a console is getting something like Pikmin, and even if Steam made HL3 Steam only... well, I've got a PC.

Yeah I fail to see the appeal here but thats because if im playing it on steam its a PC experience. (ie i want my keyboard)

Otherwise I prefer Sony for multiplat experiences
