Except that was a children's book and a move that was made with little to no actual proof that children would be turned off by the title.

From Wikipedia...

Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children's book.[14] They thought that a child would not want to read a book with the word "philosopher" in the title and,[30] after some discussion, the American edition was published in October 1998 under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.[14] Rowling claimed that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time.[31] Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy, and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from UK English "crumpets" to US English "muffin". While Rowling accepted the change from both UK English "mum" and Seamus Finnegan's Irish variant "mam" to "mom" in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books. However Nel considered that Scholastic's translations were considerably more sensitive than most of those imposed on UK English books of the time, and that some other changes could be regarded as useful copyedits.[28] Since the UK editions of early titles in the series were published a few months earlier than the American versions, some American readers became familiar with the British English versions after buying them via the Internet.

Also, they seriously bothered changing "mum" to "mom". God forbid a book from another culture not be completely Americanized.

That's not why they changed the name.

It's because whatever connotation "philosopher" has over here is completely unrelated to magic, disregarding the actual philosopher's stone.

Of course.

But it is exactly what they expected American kids not to know.

If you don't know the legend, "Philosopher's Stone" sounds like some ancient Greek thing old men pondered over while drinking poison and talking about the meaning of life.

It's because in America, the world philosopher is going to mean some old smart guy in a toga to kids. They wouldn't make the magic/alchemy connection at all if they didn't know the legend.

How can they be trying to avoid a connotation that Americans wouldn't be able to make?

Therefore it's extremely relevant.

I still don't see why that matters. The cover art is a kid on a broomstick, reading the synopsis would let kids know it's about magic, and word travels fast. While the first book was out, most kids that heard about it probably didn't even know it had a subtitle.

It was an incredibly pointless "call out" and it contributed nothing to the topic.
So I guess I should thank you for your meaningless contribution to this topic?

But speaking of Harry Potter, but I can't remember if the Philosopher/Soceror's Stone gets mentioned in any movies after the first. I know it is mentioned in the books a couple of times in later installments, but I don't remember if any of those snippets made it into the movies and what word they used, if so.
