Board 8 > Why is FF XIII so poorly received compared to FF X?

The major complaint I read about FF XIII, and the only thing its detractors seem to consistently agree on, it that it is too linear. Well, FF X was extremely linear as well. What's the difference? Now I understand that some people may simply have thought the story in FF X was much better....but that shouldn't account for such a great difference in the rating of the two games unless the story in FF XIII was abysmal. But if that were the case I would expect to hear many more complaints about the story in XIII, but really all I ever hear about it is "LINEAR LINEAR LINEAR!!!"

I dunno. Apparently the late game stuff was somewhat weak as well, like sidequests given by floating orbs or something. I think that there are different types of FF. There are ones that focus on story, ones that don't so much; ones where every playable character is unique and ones where you can do whatever you want with them; and linear/open world ones.

Also, good and bad ones. XIII and XIII-2 are connected, and yet one is somehow good and the other one isn't, in the same way Sonic Unleashed's day levels are bad and Sonic Colours is pretty ballin'.

I was playing Xenogears recently, and realized that it's *far* more linear than FF XIII. That game gives you no choice of where to go but a straight line of plot point > cutscene > terrible dungeon > plot point > cutscene

- writing quality/story/characters (Toriyama/Watanabe vs. Nojima, not a contest)
- world building (Spira, with its locations, people, Yevon, sense of geography, protagonists' goals tied coherently to the world vs. Cocoon/Pulse, with impressive locations, but limited coherency)
- character advancement & weapon systems (Sphere Grid vs. Crystarium, clear ability choices vs. complex/arcane upgrade system)
- pacing (FFXIII is extremely battle focused with the odd scene, while FFX switches between battles, scenes and towns, like most JRPGs)
- sidequests (almost nothing in FFXIII other than fighting, while FFX has Blitzball, mini-games, secret Aeons/weapons, towns etc.)

XIII-2. In the last 24 hours, I have heard three different people praise it as a return to form. This is purely anecdotical, but these people hated XIII and XII, if you're curious.

So far FF13-2 IS better I guess. At least gameplay-wise. There are some problems I have with it though.

There is some dumbass **** though. Serah is a boring protagonist so far. Noel is alright though. Story has some neat concepts but so far is failing to really execute on them.

But all my complaints about 13 were fixed. Maps are better, fighting system was improved by not game-overing when your leader dies. Monster stuff is kind of boring though and wish they would have made it a more traditional party member

Did you play 13?

Basically you have two party members, Noel and Serah. They have full sets of paradigms. But then your third party member is used by monsters, who have one paradigm each. When you switch paradigms, you switch monsters depending on your paradigm set up.

I do wish monsters gained CP like Serah / Noel. That's my only real complaint with them. It can be obnoxious finding enough of those droplets/orbs/chips to level them up consistently. Otherwise, I like them as a third party member. Definitely enjoying XIII-2 much more than XIII.

No, Player 1 could play as them too, but they didn't have as much effort put into them as Emil. Which...is saying something, given how clunky he is, but I guess that's just the battle system in general.

I didn't have much of a problem with it in ToS2 though, since you'll usually have at least one extra human party member or if you don't, the level isn't that challenging. With the ONE EXCEPTION being the hardest ****ing fight in the game against two human bosses in the final dungeon when you only have monsters.

Emil clunky whaaaa? Emil plays sooooo good, probably my favourite playable character Tales history. Marta too, really loved playing as her, just not as much as Emil.

ToS1 characters were insanely clunky though, it was really weird. I think Regal played fine, but the rest of the cast holy crap I was just so weirded out by how bad it felt.
