I’ve having a b**** of a time finding any good subbed clips, or really any good clips at all on youtube, so here’s a snippet from the first episode. At least the quality is really good!

Just to clarify, anime Utena not movie Utena, I’ve never really been a fan of movie Utena. Her characterization is different and less fun.

Oh man, now here is a character near and dear to my heart. I haven’t watched many anime series, but the ones I have watched are 9 times out of 10 dripping with homoerotic subtext, and of course Revolutionary Girl Utena is no exception on that front.
Let me set the scene for you: We’ve got pink haired sword fighting maven Utena Tenjou attending Ohtori Academy wearing a stylishly modified, booty shorted version of the male uniform. So clearly she knows what the ladies like already. She’s got mad b-ball skillz, and has all the wimmen throwing themselves at her while all the men question why they continually get their asses kicked by a middle school girl. But Utena has got some kind of hero complex, and she only has eyes for purple haired punching bag Anthy Himemiya. She rides to Anthy's rescue and proceeds to kick the student council’s collective technicolored asses. Then some gross heterosexual stuff tries to happen but Prince Utena decides “f*** that,” and goes back to protecting Anthy the witch. Eventually Utena brings about the world revolution except it only applies to this one school and even then who knows if that’s even real.

What I’m trying to say here is that Utena is the rose themed Super Man of dykes and it is awesome.

Now. I’m not gonna sit here and psycho-analyze this show because that is inexplicably an exercise in futility, anyone that’s watched it can tell you that. What I can say is Utena has been one of my favorite characters for many, many years now. Why? She’s noble, despite being naïve, she’s heroic without being pompous, and she clearly knows how to handle her b****es. Who could ask for more? Well, besides maybe a +5 year age boost >__>

I haven't seen either in quite a while, but to my recollection Utena is better than.Sailor Moon. Great classic anime there.

I’m a totally VA nerd so this was really interesting to me. Tenchi ran on Toonami in the early 2000s and 11 years later the VA’s are still doing panels. Pretty cool:

Heh heh, watching this on youtube has really brought back a lot of fond childhood memories. It actually made me want to go dig out my old Toonami Ryoko/Ayeka/Tenchi figures and look at them. Unfortunately the only one I’d be interested in keeping at this point would be Ryoko, and even more unfortunately the figure just isn’t that well done. She’s got this goofy look on her face that’s just… weird. Too bad too, because they actually did a pretty good job with Ayeka/Tenchi. Oh well, rummage sale bound they go I suppose.

Ryoko makes it to number 7 on my list largely because of nostalgia. I mean, I spent half my childhood pretending I was a space pirate. She can freaking shoot lasers and conjure up a lightsaber and teleport and phase through objects and get drunk and make fun of stupid princesses. What more do you need in a character? Ryoko is a raging badass, and yet she still has a vulnerable side. There are moments when you know she’s actually a really caring and sympathetic individual. For example in (oh god my Tenchi knowledge is so rusty) I think in the fight with Kagato in Tenchi Universe, she and Ayeka were battling some monster, and Ryoko pretty much saved Ayeka’s life despite Ayeka always getting all up on her man. Which, by the way, is like, Ayeka’s f***ing cousin or something. What’s up with purple haired girls and incest? Huh? First Anthy, now Ayeka. Stop it purple haired girls. It’s disgusting! If I ever see a purple haired girl on the street, I can only assume she’s banging a family member.

Anyway. Ryoko. Badass. It is impossible to deny. The Tenchi dub I think was really well done for the time. Now, it’s kinda jerky and cheesy, but compared to some of the really bad ones that were done around the same time, I think it stands up pretty well. Petrea Burchard is forever the Ryoko of my heart.

Alright, so user saveus_Maria called it. You got me. But if we’re just being honest, did you guys really expect anything else?
Just for curiosity’s sake, I’ll post my complete sailor scout ranking:
Uranus > Mars > Neptune > Jupiter > Mercury > Pluto > Venus > Saturn >>> Moon

And Jupiter/Mercury is by far the best non-canon pairing >__>

Where to even start with Sailor Uranus? Literally the first episode of Sailor Moon I ever saw was the dub of the Neptune/Uranus introductory episode. I must have been about… 12 at the time I think? I can remember there was literally nothing on TV, so I was flipping through and stumbled upon it. I had heard of Sailor Moon before, but I pretty much figured it was a kiddy show and why would I watch that? Funny how I remember it so clearly. Anyway, even at 12 I was like “Wtf… cousins? You gotta be kidding me.” I actually thought the show was dealing with incest (this is becoming way too big of a trend in recent write-ups). I can remember thinking “Wow! That’s pretty f***ed up for a kid’s show!” Then shortly after I found out that it was kinda a cover for Neptune/Uranus’ actual relationship in the “non-American” version. What baffled me as a kid was why the dubbers would rather let kids/tweens (ie. the people watching Toonami at this point) believe that these two were cousins and gay for each other rather than just leaving the relationship alone and letting it just be regular girls gay for each other. You can’t tell me that even a younger kid could look at Haruka and her short hair and boy’s uniform and husky voice and not immediately go “Wow, that chick is a total lesbian.”

For me as a kid there weren’t that many characters I could really look up to and identify with on a personal level. Uranus, even in her awkward dub state, was a character I could. These days there are a lot of openly lesbian characters on TV (just take a look at this list), but back then – just a few short years ago, there really weren’t. Even though Haruka/Michiru’s relationship was a little ambiguous at times, it was still very clear to anyone with eyes what was going on. And at 12, just coming into my own and figuring myself out, it was really important for me to have someone to identify with, even just a little bit. She was everything I was beginning to want to be. She was cool, confident, strong, powerful, talented, drove a sweet car, and had a banging girlfriend. I’m willing to bet Sailor Uranus made the lives of lots of baby lesbians a lot easier back then, so thanks for that Naoko Takeuchi!

Now let’s talk a little bit about voice acting. Mmmmh, Megumi Ogata… has there ever been a voice sexier? I think you’d be hard pressed to find one. I could pretty much just listen to her talk all day, and she’s not too shabby of a singer either. For me, the only person that can compete with Ogata when it comes to Sailor Uranus is Nao Takagi, the second actress to play her in the stage musicals. She just has dat swagger. Still, Ogata’s gotta take it. I actually think Sarah Lafleur did a pretty decent job in the dub, considering. But yeah, decent just can’t live up to the greatness of Megumi Ogata. Still, even though the dub was butchered to s***, a lot of the voice acting was actually pretty damn good. Whoever did Serena’s voice in that dub clip above actually delivered her lines really well and is honestly pretty funny. Weird how looking back now, I actually like the voices a lot more than when I was a kid. Maybe I can just appreciate it for what it is now instead of making comparisons. Who knows. Whatever the case, Sailor Uranus is and will always be my favorite Sailor Scout.

I've never seen or read Sailor Moon so I could only shallowly rank the cast by appearance and Uranus would probably still place high. I'd have to go see what the others look like again since I only know what a few of them look like.
