15. Kiyone Makibi
Anime – Tenchi Series
Voiced By: Yuri Amano/Wendee Lee





Ah the Tenchi series. Holds a special place of nostalgia in my heart. Like many other characters I find myself backing, Kiyone is probably the least liked main character of the series for many. A lot of times I fall into the unfortunate trap of liking a character that seems to get very little screen time.
For being a harem anime, really the only girls that actively seem to fight for Tenchi’s affections are Ayeka and Ryoko. Sure Washu makes some dirty jokes, and sure Sasami acts really cute and stuff, but Mihoshi is clueless and Kiyone doesn’t even make an attempt. Kiyone is a member of dem Galaxy Police, and she takes her job very seriously. Constantly trying to get promoted and get out of this dump we call Earth. Why? Because **** Earth, that’s why. Too bad Mihoshi will have none of that nonsense; and Kiyone belongs with Mihoshi in every possible way, I don’t think anyone can dispute that, so even when she finally gets promoted, she sticks by Mihoshi. Kiyone wouldn’t be as awesome of a character without Mihoshi by her side, but no matter how much her characterization relies on the dumb blonde, I still like Kiyone and not Mihoshi. So here we are.
I’ve always been annoyed that Kiyone was pretty much gyped out of the OVA, but she more than makes up for it with her bad ass attitude in Universe. And then… ohh then… we get to Tokyo. And all the characters are just so bad. And we get crappy extra characters. And everyone is angry and unhappy. And the characterization just goes to ****. And it just feels like everything is super deformed all the freaking time. And even Kiyone’s character design goes down the crapper. It’s not cool. You don’t mess with a girl’s neon orange headband, ok? You just don’t.

And now it’s time to play a game I like to call “Non-Canon Pairings That Are Infinitely Better Than Tenchi + Anyone!”
Ryoko + Ayeka > Kiyone + Mihoshi > Ryoko + Kiyone > Uhh... my 14 year old self could probably come up with more. But pretty much Girl X + Girl Y is always > Girl X + Tenchi.

14. Winifred “Winnie” Sanderson
Movie – Hocus Pocus
Played By: Bette Midler





Winifred is a witch living in 1693 Salem, Massachusetts and is the oldest (and most competent) of herself and two sisters – Sarah and Mary. Winnie and her sisters are brewing up a potion to suck the lives out of all the children in Salem so they can stay young and beautiful forever, but the plan backfires when they lure their test child, Emily Binx, to their cottage in the woods. Emily’s brother Thackery Binx follows them and in an attempt to stop the witches from hurting his little sister he gets turned into a black cat that can never die, even if he gets run over by a semi truck. With Emily now dead, the witches slightly younger, and Binx a cat, the witches think they have a free ride to run a train on Salem’s kids. Unfortunately for them the towns people come along to hang them, but not before Winnie puts a curse on them, letting them know she and her sisters will be back to finish the job.
Cue 1993 wacky witch hijinx.

I don’t know how many of you have seen Hocus Pocus, but it’s by far my favorite Halloween movie and has been since it came out in 1993. Winnie is such a funny character, constantly surrounded by her buffoonish sisters played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. I thought about adding Sarah and Mary to the list, and while they are good characters, they just don’t have that magic Winnie’s got. Bette Midler is obviously an icon, and I find it hilarious that she’s randomly in this 1993 cult clas-
What? As I’m doing research of this write up I find that Bette was the voice of Georgette in Disney’s 1988 movie Oliver and Company. Never knew that before. Huh.

Anyway, Winnie is hilarious, devious, strong, crazy, driven, smart, has a set of wicked pipes, and is just an all around fun character. Costume/make up design for the witches in this movie was really superb in my opinion. Great stuff.

Number one, I love me a lady that can handle a sword. Number two, Lulu was so f***ing stupid and annoying he deserved what he got.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way let’s talk turkey. Chris is made Captain of the Zexen knights at the young age of 22. Her nickname is the Silver Maiden. The people adore her. And so do I! As you guys know, FFX was my first RPG. What you might not know though, is Suikoden III was my second RPG. I honestly for the life of me can’t remember what made my buy it, being as I hadn’t played the previous two, but I did and I fell in love with Chris right away. Even though the game tries to shove Hugo in your face all of the damn time. I was like “No, Suikoden III. I’m choosing Chris first. Deal with it.” And so I did.
The one thing that seriously weirded me out about this game was the distinct lack of voice acting. I can remember thinking like “This is the PS2! Top of the line video gaming technology! Where are the voices?! I just played a game with voice acting!” The other thing that was odd was the severe lack of music during long stretches of the dialog. I mean, if you're not gonna give me voices at least give me music! Still, I thought Chris was awesome and I liked how she pretty much had a "whatever" attitude toward all the adoration showered on her, yet she was fiercely loyal to her Zexen Knights and loved the people dearly. Also I thought she had a little something something going on with Yun if you know what I mean. Girl sees Chris in her dreams bro.
And clearly Chris was my Flame Champion.

12. Dr. Arizona Robbins
Television Drama – Grey’s Anatomy
Played By: Jessica Capshaw




Named after a battle ship, Arizona is the badass yet perky and slightly emotional head of Peds at Seattle Grace Mercy West. Arizona was introduced in season five of Grey’s Anatomy and was originally only suppose to have a three episode run, but Jessica Capshaw’s chemistry was so good with Sara Ramirez they signed her for the rest of the season – and she’s been a regular ever since! Plus she’s got wheelies. And she uses them. Often. Come on now, who doesn’t want a pair of adult wheelies?
I find that most of the female characters I like tend to fall into one of two categories: women I’d like to emulate, or woman I’d like date (with the occasional exception of course). But in this case, Dr. Robbins falls into the second category. I find Arizona’s personality sweet and her ability to be such a hardcore amazing surgeon incredibly awesome and adorable. Plus, while you might not know it because of her profession, Arizona has literally zero desire to ever have kids. This immediately endears me toward her since kids are terrible little monsters. Unfortunately she lets her girlfriend talk her into it and they have a seriously unattractive baby. Although I guess Callie was gonna have the baby regardless >__> And they get married. Somehow marriage takes all the sexiness out of a relationship. Well… maybe not all the sexiness, but a lot. Tsk…
Arizona stands by Callie through all of her family issues, and doesn’t even hold it against her that she had sex with George, which is seriously disgusting. That’s pretty admirable to me, because I feel like at that point in life people are usually out to everyone who matters, and to be someone’s first girlfriend can always be daunting. You never know how things will play out, so kudos to you Arizona. All in all, Arizona is my favorite character on Grey’s and one of the primary reasons why I continue to watch the show. Lord knows it doesn’t have many redeeming factors otherwise!

And now that I'm done with book one of Hunger Games I'll have more time to focus on this, so expect updates to come a lot quicker. My goal is to finish this before I start book two =]

11. Emily Fields

One of Rosewood, PA’s many, many resident gay ladies (f***, clearly I should just go live there). Poor Emily has had a terrible track record with her girlfriends. With two dead, one trying to drown her, and one being run off by the mysterious and deadly A, girl just can’t catch a break. Emily is a champion swimmer which means she’s extremely in shape in all the right ways, and she’s played by the crazy hot Shay Mitchell, which means she’s also crazy hot. That’s one hell of a combination if you ask me!
Emily has had a lot of personal growth over the past two seasons of PLL, much more than the other Liars have had I’d say. She started off weak, timid, and afraid; not allowing herself be honest about her sexuality, getting pushed around by her friends, getting pushed around by A, among other things. She let rumors be spread about her having sex with a guy because dude, it’ll totally happen eventually, so who cares? Yeah. It will definitely happen. Don’t even worry about it. Am I right?
But all that has changed now, and Emily has become a strong and independent character. Of course it’s a TV show so a lot of her struggles were simply written away – for example dealing with her parents and her sexual orientation. Right off the bat mom says “rahhh you’re not a lesbian how could you do this?!?!?!” and now she’s like “okie dokie that’s cool go have sex with your girlfriend sweetheart :) :) :)” but it’s about more than just that. A pretty much did everything in her power to beat Emily down, and eventually she decided she just wasn’t going to take it anymore. Emily has visibly grown from her trials, which is something refreshing for a tween show, and why she makes it to spot number 11 on the countdown.

You have to do all 3 paths eventually anyway, and IMO all 3 are great stuff storyline-wise.

The Suikoden series does a great job with presenting all sides of the story to get a fuller picture at what's going on.

The first two are why I watch the show in the first place. Hanna is alright. Emily is just ehhh. Her stories are the weakest (for me).

Rizzoli & Isles Spoilers
For those of you that don’t know, TNT’s detective drama Rizzoli & Isles is the gayest show on the planet. Y’know, without actually being a gay-centric show on Logo or something. Hell, it’s probably gayer than even most gay-centric shows to be quite honest. It’s so hilariously campy it’s borderline absurd, yet it still tries to be semi-serious. Despite that, I think the writers know what the show actually is for the most part and come up with stories accordingly. Honestly, I listed five clips up there, but I could easily put up about 10 more just off the top of my head. Hell, there was a whole episode entitled “I Kissed a Girl” where Jane and Maura go undercover in a lesbian bar to try and score some dates, and Maura wears a ridiculously boobalicious top. God I love this show.
All this brings me to number 10, our very own Dr. Maura Isles. Dr. Isles is the chief medical examiner for the BPD (Boston Police Dept.) and is extremely good at her job. Orphaned when she was a baby, Maura was adopted by the very wealthy and respected Isles family. While she had a nice, normal childhood her parents, although they loved her, often did not pay much attention to their daughter. As a result, Maura grew up a bit socially awkward and didn’t have many friends. Also when she was 10 her parents sent her to an all girl’s boarding school. I mean, come on. The lesbian jokes write themselves here folks. Anyway, eventually we find out Maura is the biological daughter of a notorious Irish gangster named Paddy Doyle, and that she had a brother (now deceased) who was also apparently a criminal and a genius. This of course messes with Maura’s head, but luckily her LLBFF Jane is there to help her through it.
Maura is like a hotter and more endearing version of Bones. Actually, she’s kind of like if Bones and Dr. Arizona Robbins had a baby. Now that’s a love scene I’d like to see play out… Anyway, Maura has genius level book smarts but is pretty socially inept. She can’t lie to save her life, and seemingly loves high fashion. She’s just an all around adorable character and without Sasha Alexander playing her I doubt if this show would have made it past season 1. The chemistry between Sasha and Angie Harmon is amazing, so if you can take it for what it is (not necessarily what it’s trying to be) Rizzoli & Isles is a funny, quirky, and sometimes even emotional show. It’s going to be starting its third season this June, so break out the Birkenstocks everyone!

First let me say Amy Poehler is brilliant, and I’ve always preferred her to Tina Fey. Not that Tina isn’t also funny, but damn Amy almost never fails to crack me up. Even in projects they do together, Amy seems to always steal the show.
Anyway, Leslie is the star player at the Parks Department in Pawnee, Indiana and loves her job almost to a fault. She decorates her office with strong women like Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice, and does her best to emulate their leadership qualities.
I didn’t pay much attention to Parks & Recreation until probably about the third season, and actually just this most recent season is when I started watching it on TV every week. Back when it premiered I watched a few episodes and just brushed it off as an unfunny rip-off of The Office. At the time I thought The Office was still funny… my how things have changed. The first season was weak, but thank God it got renewed, because after that Parks & Rec became steadily and steadily more hilarious and amazing. Story lines improved immensely, the cast was becoming more comfortable with their characters, and at the center of it all is of course Leslie Knope.
Leslie can play the straight man while still being hilariously funny about it. She nags in a funny way, she scolds in a funny way, even when she’s trying to be serious it’s usually still laced with humor. I suppose in recent episodes the role of “straight man” has fell to Ben Wyatt, making Leslie look a little zanier by comparison, but it doesn’t matter. In my opinion Leslie Knope is actually one of the best female role models on TV right now. Think about it; she loves her job and is an extremely devoted and hard worker, she’s pretty successful in her field, she’s got lots of friends and most people seem to love her, she has no trouble getting dates (3 boyfriends in 4 seasons I think?) and is even in a pretty serious loving relationship as of right now, she’s ambitious, loyal, funny. Honestly, if young women are looking to emulate someone they could do a whole lot worse.
