I've tried every main spirit, and it's just... bleh. Mixing them doesn't really help either. It's just the effect of the alcohol that I like. Do people actually enjoy the taste though? I don't understand how.

Wine is good, and whiskey is pretty great straight, though it's an acquired taste. Have you tried a whiskey sour? That's usually a pretty well-liked drink by people who aren't too big into alcohol. Also, make sure you aren't buying the ultra-cheap stuff when it comes to hard alcohol. A ten dollar handle will taste like **** regardless.

Also, if you like wine, you could also try stuff like plum wine and black raspberry wine if you have access to some sort of Asian market.

Strange that you say whiskey, because I've tried that straight before and I could not handle it in the slightest. Whereas everything else, like vodka, gin, rum, etc. I can drink those straight, and while it's gross, I can take it. Though I'm not sure which whiskey I tried before, it was a while ago. Whiskey sour? Is that a special type of whiskey?

I mentioned it primarily because it's one of the simpler mixed drinks I could think of that's also reasonably well-liked.

Use ice if the whiskey is too strong for you to take. Ideally you shouldn't use too much, since it cuts down on the flavor. I kind of find it amazing that you think gin straight is more tolerable than whiskey straight, though.

You're not going to get much enjoyment taste-wise out of drinking cheap hard alcohol, though--it's cheap for a reason.

Well of course. But I did say I've tried more expensive liquors and they still tasted kinda bad. But oh well. Cheap 80-proof has just the same effect as expensive 80-proof and that's what matters right now. Honestly I'm too lazy to mix drinks.

Most alcohol, especially spirits, seem to take a little while to develop a taste for. I never used to like whiskey, but a year or so ago I broke my ankle, did some occasional boredom drinking and now I'm quite partial to it.

If you're looking for something pretty easy that tastes good, try a White Russian - I don't know anyone who doesn't like them.


edit - Oh, if you really don't like the taste of spirits, throw them in your freezer. Ice-cold vodka is much easier to drink than it is at room temp.

Even if it's cheap vodka? What I have here is McCormick.

Okay, I'm going to try here, I think it's my duty as a bartender even if this seems like a lost cause.

Gonna skip over the true great drinks like martinis and anything involving whiskey as that's clearly not going to be your thing right now.

Do you like milk? If so, get some Kahlua, it's nice and cheap and you can mix with the vodka and milk for your White Russian. Wouldn't hurt to get some Amaretto too. That gives you the option of a Toasted Almond or a Toasted Black Russian or whatever name you want to go with. If you get some Bailey's to use instead of milk, you can make a Screaming Orgasm. Experiment with combinations of those or look up those drinks.

If you don't like milk, my first tip is to get some grenadine. If you like fruity stuff, a dash of grenadine does wonders. Orange juice/tequila/grenadine gives you a Tequila Sunrise. If you substitute in grenadine for the sloe gin in an Alabama Slammer (giving you Amaretto, Southern Comfort, Grenadine and Orange Juice) that might work out for you.

Also, if you get a bottle of sour mix from the store, there's the Whiskey Sour, the Amaretto Sour... hell, if you have SoCo, TripleSec and Lime juice you can make a Bible Belt which is a good one.

Hell, you want a simple but great drink? Dark N Stormy. Dark Rum, Ginger Beer, Lime. Next.

Trying to keep this as simple as possible for you since you're trying stuff out. Otherwise I'd give you stuff with more ingredients that works out better or more specialty ingredients. Here I'm basically suggesting the spirits and Amaretto (mixes well with tons of stuff), and SoCo if you have the chance.

That's a start.

I don't know why I seem like a lost cause. You're a bartender though? I'm honesty trying to be the same. Like I just recently took a training course and took the exam. Not liking the taste doesn't necessarily preclude you from being a competent bartender, but I can't imagine it'd make it easy.

However, you may want to reconsider saying you love alcohol if you don't like the taste!

Fireball whiskey is a strong alcohol that tastes great.

Maybe I'm just anal about it, but I think there's a pretty important distinction there. It sounds as if you like intoxication rather than alcohol, which is fine (and probably the case for a lot of people!), but sometimes it's important to know which.
