But there are already research corporations like Merek and Human Genome Sciences which are publicly traded. If that bothers you, there are also nonprofit research organizations like Underwriters Laboratories and Western Laboratories, which operate without government funding. Why you think you need government for the sake of science is beyond me.

Examining the genome allows people to find potential genetic diseases; there's a way to monetize that knowledge. I'm not talking about the stuff you can make a profit on in the near future. Do you think a place like CERN would get built without government funding, though? That's an awfully large expense for something with no currently foreseeable use.

You must have missed the line about nonprofits.

And yes, I do think you could have built CERN without government funding, presuming of course people were able to keep the taxes that funding would have come from.

You and I agree that the knowledge alone has considerable (if vauge) value, so what makes you think there aren't enough people on this planet who think likewise, to the point that they could have paid for it of their own volition?

Racist or not, the fact that the man has not publicly disowned these groups is not a good thing. And of course there's the fact that he was unable to moderate content in his own "Ron Paul" branded newsletters.

Ron Paul has no legitimacy, and you want to elect him president.

Anyway, another plug for government: the government is the primary funding source for basic science; most private corporations aren't willing to pump money into research that may not pay off for 50 or 100 years (some research would still get done, sure, but it would be mostly applied. There would be little incentive to fund the less useful branches of pure math, for example).
Very good point. We can use all the money saved from axing the DoE to give grants to scientific research and actually improve the intelligence of this country.

I'm all for that!

I'm not gonna reply to you, but I'm just gonna make general statements against your post, for others who are reading who may not be away.

Ron Paul has already said that he doesn't agree with what those people think (and the 9/11 truthers as well). There is no reason to refuse their money. Why would someone who is defending personal liberty try to tell people what they can do with their money?

And the Ron Paul newsletters thing is really funny, though. Anyone can write something under your name. Youtube has tons of Ron Paul accounts, and Obama accounts, and Fox News accounts, etc., all of which are 100% unofficial and unregulated by anyone. Check it out:

From: DeepsPraw | #457
I fully support Ron Paul and promise to vote for him whenever possible. He is the only good candidate of the last 3 decades, and I am barely worthy to even mention his name.

Just back from work, got a lot of things to address, one post at a time...

We were talking about the ultra-rich, not the ultra poor.

Is Bill Gates living in South America these days? Has Warren Buffet moved to China?

1. Jim Rogers moved to Singapore.

2. Moving won't let you escape the Income Tax. The US is the only country in the world tax incomes that are made outside of the country. To actually escape the US Income Tax, you have to renounce your citizenship, a long, complicated, and burdensome process typically requiring you to already have citizenship in some other foreign country. Also, on your way out, they tax you on whatever assets you take with you.

3. Who cares where people actually live? Doesn't matter in the least. What matters is where they keep their assets. Rather than attack Mitt Romney for having his assets in Switzerland or the Cayman Islands, perhaps we should ask why he has them there. Perhaps if we lowered our tax burden, WE could be Switzerland or the Cayman Islands. Perhaps if we had more economic freedom, Swiss politicians would be called unpatriotic for having American bank accounts. Don't hold your breath on that one though!

It's not "useless" though, the information just can't be monetized in any immediately foreseeable way. Furthermore, a lot of the research that currently appears to be perfectly academic eventually becomes very useful. For example, without understanding quantum mechanics, transistors would never have been invented, and good luck making any modern electronic device without those.

I'm pretty sure people in Europe aren't starving even though they have no jobs (it's true that they have massive unemployment, but that doesn't lead to starvation in Europe). Switzerland (where half of the Large Hadron Collider is located) is doing fine too.

Anyway, to reiterate the point about how government protects property: people didn't believe OWS could develop into Russia in 1917 or China in 1949 without a government there to enforce laws. Maybe that's true, and maybe the thousands of small states the countries would break into wouldn't go to war with each other (think Exxon and Chevron going to war, and remember, it only takes one side to start a war). Even then, there are plenty of foreign nations that would invade. With real armies. Because there's plenty of wealth to seize here.

Even if you got rid of governments across the world (wow, this sounds a lot like Marx's vision.....) it still wouldn't work. Because as the saying goes, power abhors a vacuum. Where there is no power, the strongest will seize it. And they will expand it. A world without government is not a sustainable equilibrium. That is yet another reason why Communism doesn't work. If your idea suggests that you do the same things as Communism, you should question it thoroughly.

Is your assertion that we aren't spending a dime on this thing? Because I'm 100% certain that isn't true. Also, even if people in their own countries aren't starving, that money could easily be given to people who are, in other places.

IIRC, there was a lot of discussion about building the LHC or something similar in the US, but it couldn't get enough funding and the plans fell through. I don't know if American taxpayers are funding CERN at all, but we're definitely not contributing the lion's share of its funding. And physics research has produced a ton of economic gain in the past century. CERN is a bad example of wasteful spending, because on the level of a society, physics research produces big profits.

This sounds really harsh, but feeding starving people in Africa doesn't turn a profit for the European taxpayer (or the American taxpayer), while physics research does.

My point is that you can't argue that CERN is a waste because the money could have been used to feed starving people. At least not while maintaining consistency with your other positions.

As an aside, if we really wanted to end hunger in Africa we'd send ships full of grain over there, not money. It would have to be the US, because the US is the biggest agricultural producer in the world. It would be like what the Roman Empire did with the city of Rome. Every year ships full of grain would arrive in Rome from the rich farmlands of the provinces of Africa (modern Tunisia, not the whole continent) and Egypt. The emperor would hand out the bread to the poor of Rome. And he would be popular.

Here's the deal: the government isn't going to be "coming for you" anytime soon. Even if they were going to go after anyone in the US, it wouldn't be some random person in their teens/early twenties that has done nothing relevant to the government's interests. There's no point in buying guns to defend yourself from the government.

Gift tax and estate tax just smack of confiscation of property. I suppose what bothers me about it is that gift and estate tax will eventually shrink an estate to nothing, whereas with income tax, tax won't ever shrink it to nothing, because you're only taxed on gains.
