The game is beautiful, in music, graphics, and level design. It precisely nails how difficult a game should be. Lots of collectibles, but they're rarely obtuse to find and add both to challenge and exploration.
why did this not win every single 2010 goty award

The few levels I played of DKCR were better than I ever remembered the DKC-series being. Retro Studios is a quality company, and hopefully Nintendo will continue letting them help in other series of theirs.

Tbh, I enjoyed it must more than I have Rayman Origins so far. The only improvement I would make off the top of my head is just formally getting rid of the very forgiving lives system.
Yeah, I agree that the balloons system is kind of silly. It only really serves as a banana coin sink and way to lose all your puzzle pieces on the K stages if you take a really long time.

The level design is really good, and the graphics are pretty nice with beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes. But the game is ultimately an extremely simple platformer, so that's not going to appeal to everyone.
Also, the only levels I found particularly difficult, barring mirror mode which is a pain in the ass, were Muncher Marathon and whatever the Cliffs extra temple level is called.
