Friday Session:

-Spoke with Vea. Received much loot, plus a map leading to the stolen ship's landing point.
-Advanced, finding a dead dragon, likely killed by Queen. Attacked by Fury soldiers, who were soundly trashed, only to be harassed by gnoll warriors...who were trashed even more soundly.
-Most of the dragon's teeth were missing. Possibly to be used in some ritual?
-Found ship, guarded by Shursh and a large contigent of Furies.
-Winter diverted most of the Furies away while the group snuck in.
-Fought and defeated Shursh, denying her from hitting spectacularly (Cash moment: her missing Valerian on an 18). The haze of madness and pain lifting from her eyes, she asked to die. Grudgingly, Valerian complied. A bit of her soul was feed to Luni in exchange for assisting the group by briefly summoning an army of Deadlights.
-Buried Shursh, using her blade as a headstone. Climbed onto the ship to find a way to seize it or disable it.
-Decided to disable it, in the end. Unable to manipulate it properly, Brona sent it forward, towards the edge.
-Tried to leave, only to find the door closed and Sonya waiting for us. End of session.

PS: Extra bulletpoint: -Dealt more than 100 damage in one round ). The race between Brona and Val for strikeriest guy is on now!

BTW, something I just realized: you might wanna take a look at the Infernal Slave theme, Scep. It' s insanely good on Brona, no lie.

EDIT: Vance himself might love the Yakuza theme - it lets him go full-CHA without so many penaties and it has a pretty nice power.

So, Omega was having trouble picking a theme, since none of the available ones fit him. He was thinking about his character's style, one thing led to another, and inspiration struck...so he wants to know if this theme is kosher. Behold, the...

Secret Spellspy

Level 1: You gain access to the One-Liner feature power.

One Liner
Encounter + Martial
Minor Action + Personal
Effect: If you hit the target with a Will attack, it takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls until you are hit by an attack or until the end of the encounter. If the target is bloodied, you may also immediately make an Intimidate check to force it to surrender.

Level 5: Chose one power you currently know. All saves made against that power suffer a -2 penalty. Each level, you may repick your signature power as you see fit.

Level 10: You may use your Arcana skill in place of your Stealth skill, as you weave wards and spells of invisibility around you like a subtle web of nondetection.


Basically, this theme is a tweaked Yakuza (Dragon 404) power plus a castery bent for features, based on the secret services of the Magitek land Omega's character hails from. It's less powerful than Yakuza, being single-target and chomping up an action, but easier to trigger. And the features are about even - they do different things, but do them well. Does it seem OK?

Scep kinda beat me to it (screw losing internet for a day), but I wouldn't say the theme is your life's upbringing in this case, since we've reskinned heavily and had to employ homebrews for characters whom normal themes simply did not fit. I understand it perfectly if you don't feel like swapping the theme, since Mercenary is a pretty great one, but since you mentioned that you wanted to do a crazy CHA fighter, I realized Yakuza functions as a boss enabler to the concept, so I figured I might as well suggest it. :)

And this time, I seriously think it's worth considering a swap, Accel, if that Elemental Initiate thing is true. I know you feel like your theme has to be core to the character, but imagine not having to burn an MC and a ton of feats on that monk strike, plus getting ANOTHER damage boost vs. bloodied with that ki focus expertise.

EDIT: And Scep: Seriously consider the Hyper Focus for Lightning down the line. I'll try to pass the detailed info out ASAP, but +2 damage a shot is 'gatlike'.

Y'know I just don't like the idea of swapping out options for better ones as content is released. There's a line where the munchkining just gets excessive and I already think we've gotten dangerously close to it. Besides most of my favorite feats are monk feats anyway.

It sounds to me like you would just be using the resources you had available. Like in a vidya game where you have a +2 weapon of awesome but a monster suddenly dropped a +4 weapon of awesome. Would you switch weapons?

If this game had started a couple months later with this already released, would you still have picked mercenary?

I am sure either way will be fine, but it sounds like this theme is more what you would want. Unless it isn't *shrugs*

Well, I'm not swapping out, but I think it's logical to mention the options. If it helps you realize a concept, I say go for it - why put points into WIS to be effective if a theme swap lets you go full CHA, and so on.

Because this isn't a video game, characters in D&D are meant to be played like living, breathing people inside this fantasy world. Wizards of the Coast doesn't release content from the in character perspective, that is purely out of game stuff.

You also wouldn't have the same perspective on other spells or powers you might learn, or other feats, or retrained skills. It's an acceptable break from reality to keep people from being locked into a choice they no longer want; whether what they're changing to is new or old makes no difference.

If everybody else is going to do it I can give it a looksee, but it just feels like trying too hard to "win" at D&D which is something inherently wrong of the current generation of people that play roleplaying games. You don't have out of "game" knowledge of real life, if you were actually these fantastic characters you wouldn't have the same perspective on freshly released content to make yourself stronger. It's rollplaying over roleplaying.

Edit: And aside from that none of us have really even roleplayed or so much as mentioned the retraining we've already done in character aside from Valerian's whole resurrection thing basically making him a new PC.

Hey! I did that when I swapped like half my character around! |:<

(Mostly, I think feats are a small thing - retraining them isn't too important. Themes are bigger, but if they fit the concept still, you can just say the truth, that that's the essence of your character being preserved. If the theme is noticeably different in what it accomplishes, roleplaying it is totally kosher of course.)

PS: Also, the issue with roleplaying the retrains is...well, this is a fast moving game. If something doesn't work, why should we be stuck with it because we didn't know better? Like Euri not having an expertise feat because CPU didn't know they were mandatory, for instance. In-game like a week has passed, tops. There isn't much room for fluffing things up. :-/
