10 hours of that game and I couldn't tell you one thing of substance about the story. Disaster.

SH2's best moment by far is the scene with Yuri and Ishimura, I actually find it kinda weird that someone could say otherwise, though I can see the train scene I guess.

RPGDL ran a scenes contest and the Yuri/Ishimura scene got to the de facto finals where it lost to one of the few scenes I actually consider better!

Also Shadow Hearts is way better than Xenosaga, XS has an overarching plot of gutter trash (some very good individual parts to that plot, though, I'll grant it that) and gameplay which was only really executed well in 2 and even then that's an acquired taste (if you don't like slower, methodical battles you will hate it); there's a reason it flamed out miserably compared to its planned outline. SH mailed in two competently solid games and SH1 which apparently has its appeal to some people!

I played through like 10 hours of XS1 and felt like I got nowhere.

It was pretty cool how story intensive it was and I spent so much talking to people and playing cards.

But yeah, a little too slow to have kept my interest at the time. I'll get back to it later.

what is with the xs1 hate in here, sure 3 is better but really now?

I thought the battle system was great and the game just felt really special to me when I first played it. It might have been the lack of music outside of battles and cutscenes or the huge amount of downtime in the game where you would just be running through giant space ships, but those things also felt really endearing to me and made the game just stand out from other rpgs.

sh2 > xs3 > xs1 > sh1 tbh

I love the first Shadow Hearts, hate the third, and still have to play the second but having played the third first without knowing it was the third until I saw Shadow Hearts at a Game Stop I decided to give it a try and I have not regretted it at all.

the first three are top 20 games, the last one might not make my top 100

I don't hate the first game.

I just think the battle system in the first game is terrible and gets worse as it goes along, especially toward the end when you start having 5 minute random battles.

definitely. XS1 battles just get tedious as hell. that's why I like XS3 so much -- cool atmosphere, crazy story, fun music, awesome setting, battles that don't get in the way. I actually enjoy them a lot.

Yeah, Koudela is truly miserable to play, but it's enjoyable everywhere else. One of those rare games that's more fun to watch than to interact with.

Always heal even if you think the enemy is almost dead, it's a safety precaution for these games. Also I only played the the first area of From the New World and knew it was bad so when I found the original I was in paradise.

That reminds me of the last boss I died to in FtNW Johnny only run. Malice Edna was ridiculous, and I was literally on the turn I'd kill her in a double, while she had enough stock to have a double too... and I ended up blowing it by knocking her too high and then attacking with a medium blow that missed, and then she just instantly finished me off.

just finished that opening village. figured the kidnapping guy from the train was someone important and it sounds like he is.

so far I've been too risky and not very good with the ring stuff in battle. I keep overshooting and missing my turn trying to get the perfect spots. luckily the game doesn't start off too tough.

ring is tilted a little funny. I miss it a lot and get super mad at myself.

Yeah, it took me a while to get used to using the Judgment Ring. I still miss on occasion, but Yuri's ring is cake for me now.

i think they change the angle a bit for SH2 and 3, but i could be making that up.

The ring is simple for me to use even from the beginning. I kept getting perfects with non-upgraded weapons but now that I'farther in the game it's getting harder but that's fine with me, I like a good challenge except if it's a battle that takes longer than two hours that's more of a chore than anything.

well anyway, I just met a Russian terrorist lady who almost blew me up. we seem pretty cool with it all things considered.

the game explained it but I don't quite understand, do I have to go to the graveyard every time my malice thing flashes on the screen and "quiet my malice" or whatever?

gates, sewer exits...

difficulty/balance seems weird so far. they're be a bunch of enemies (like 5 for instance) and I'll have a side character who can just kill them all in one hit. still the beginning of the game though so probably just taking it easy for now?

it's weird playing this right after a playthrough of Persona 4, SP are at such a premium in that game. I'm throwing grenades at will and knowing that I've got a couple tents in tow if I need them.

Not every time, but once it starts flashing red, you'll want to deal with it.
