sox, not you too. Mario's strong performance in the finals flies in the face of the "Zelda drone" argument. Cloud/Seph just turned out weaker than expected; Mario/Bowser could have plausibly given them the ol 55/45. The two classic Nintendo hero/villain rivalries that have had 25 years to cook were just very far ahead of the pack, and it's easy to explain why.
Thanks. Can't give into the Zelda drone arguments, the evidence against it from previous contests is overwhelming.

Congratulations to SuperNiceDog, Guru Winner, who was smart enough to pick your 7 time champion, Link.
The Villains and Series Contests weren't that bad because we got a real contest not long after that. If we get a real contest not long after this one, it will make this contest seem a little better.

Squall took care of business, but ending that close to Dante means he didn't look good doing it. I still can't imagine Dante having a very strong team in this format.

Also, I think Mario deserves some props as star of the contest. He completely annihilated every match he was in up until Link, and even then he did better than Cloud/Seph, and closer than he's ever gotten to Link before. The problem is, everyone EXPECTED him to get to Link and lose, and that's exactly what he did.
And I wish Squall had lost to Sora. That would have been hilarious.
Yeah, the problem with Mario is that every single match he had was boring and expected. The early parts of the Trainers match and the Link match were a little unexpected, but it didn't take very long for them to settle in to what we originally expected.

Kotetsu534 posted... A tag team contest could be worse than this. I think contests are good when people care about what they're voting on. People would not care about an arbitrary team of Samus/Laharl.
Hmm, that's a good point. It would be more interesting to watch (since as I mentioned Zelda Series > Mario Series is obvious while what the heck do you do with Yoshi/Sora against Snake/Guybrush?), but on the other hand people ought to have cared about supporting the Mario Series team. Which, given our vote totals, makes me shudder.
This is also the reason I support the System Contest, while we're on the subject. Are the matches themselves going to be great, no, will there be lots of fodder, yes, but people at least care about N64 > PSX and SNES > Genesis and Wii U > PS3. And after a Contest like this last one, SB can't afford to be turning down guaranteed interest/votals.
-LusterSoldier- posted... Ngamer: Let's talk just briefly about that poll that SB ran right after the contest. Would you like to see Link removed from future character battles?
Ngamer brought up that poll, which is similar to a poll that CJayC ran after the 2004 Character Battle. I linked to that 2004 poll above. If you compare that 2004 poll to the poll we got after the end of this year's contest, the results are similar. From the 2004 poll:
Yes, it's too predictable 47.61%
From the poll after the end of this contest:
Yes, it ruins the whole contest if he wins every time 12.49% While you're at it, get rid of Cloud, and maybe even Mario 35.98%
The last 2 options add up to 48.47%, which is only about 1% better than percentage from the 2004 poll. So the contest haters have been around on this site for over 7 years now. The results from 2004 are almost identical to the results today.
Ahhh, good find Luster. As I explained to SB at the end of that section, nearly everyone voting for that final option were just the "anti-Contest, always vote the worst choice" people who we've always had around. Good to have another poll result to back it up!

I'm not all that interested in another games contest, either. Generally, games are going to be pretty static, while characters are more subject to fluctuation. The only exception is more recent games, which can have wildly varying strengths before finally settling. If we have a games contest, I'd rather it be a GOTY-sorta tournament.
Hey, 2011 just ended! While I'm pretty sure Skyrim would win it, I'd still think there'd be lots of potential for good matches. Who wins between Bastion and Driver: San Francisco?

That would be especially true with people from the Philippines. Samus and Metroid is the most hated thing in the Philippines, while Laharl is really strong there. If they hate Samus and love Laharl, the Filipino voters will be more likely to vote for the other option or not vote at all instead of voting for a Samus/Laharl team.

Ugh, UGH. We've been over this a few times, but I'll bite... Yes, games are going to fluctuate less than characters, and if we were on our 8th or 9th Games Contest instead of Character Battle, I'm sure we would be in a pretty static and uninteresting situation. The difference is, we still have no idea what those static values are!
Thanks to the division by eras, all we know from 2004 and 2009 is that Mario 3 > Tetris and Ocarina > Mario 64 and Mario World > Sonic 2 and other pretty obvious stuff. We still have no idea what happens when Resident Evil 4 meets Zelda 1 and Super Metroid meets Metal Gear Solid 2 and Bioshock meets Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Skyrim meets Mario RPG and I could go on all night!

Completely agree with you on this one though. A 16 game 1v1 setup with all the most notable games each year would be great fun every January. CJay's old poll setup doesn't get the job done anymore- spending all those days on Best Wii and Best 360 and Best PC is pretty silly these days, when aside from a couple titles everything is multiplatform.

Wow, excellent idea. Last year's "Best Of" poll series lasted 16 days. A "Best of 2011" 16-game mini-tourney would last 15 days, be way more fun, have a better shot at bringing visitors to the site, and even gives us an extra day (compared to 2010) to do a "Console of the Year" poll.

I'm upbeat about next contest. I think we either get vanilla characters without Link or vanilla best game ever. If Bacon plods forward with those ideas posted in stats a while back, with any luck he'll pick the one featuring all the items and weapons because who knows what would happen there.

GameFAQs didn't care about rivalries. If SB tries even crazier gimmicks (items, weapons) after this last contest, he must be living in a bubble or something.

It seemed like he was trying too hard to come up with a idea other than the traditional games, characters, or series (even though we've only had one series contest), so he tried out rivalries since that involves the actual characters.
At least Game of the Decade worked out well because it's still a games contest with only a slight twist to the format itself (only 2000-2009 games allowed). Rivalries didn't work out because you had to deal with 2 characters in each poll option instead of normally having 1 character for each poll option (like in a traditional character contest). I think a Sidekick contest will be terrible as well, because the poll options would be something like "Mario and Luigi".

Like Ng, I wouldn't mind seeing a Systems Contest, assuming SBAllen limits it to 32 entrants and no more than a month in length. Console wars are about as old as the internet, and there are a lot of cool potential match-ups. It would work only as a one-off, but it might be fun for that lone romp.
-- Yoblazer: http://i33.tinypic.com/ml36gl_th.gif Watch and you'll see... SuperNiceDog own me... in the Guru!
Games and maybe fictional characters are the only ways to go that have been suggested. I'd be interested in a systems contest too, but not until after we get a full length contest.

Systems Contest would be a total snoozefest except for maybe 2-3 matches, and that's if Bacon actually puts together a decent bracket. Not really interested in who wins between SNES and PS2 if it means we have to get a bracket with the 3DO, Colecovision, the Jaguar, the 32X, and the Neo Geo Color.
Nobody really looks fondly back on the Series Contest despite the mega Zelda/Final Fantasy matchup in the final because we had to trod through a bracket filled with Star Ocean, Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Silent Hill, Fire Emblem, SoulCalibur, etc.

Also, I think we could well be looking at a SNES/N64 final in a series contest, which would not be very welcome at this point, but eh......one more feather in the cap for the hero.

Yeah, seeing the N64 do something stupid like beat the PS2 would probably not be worth the trouble of going through the contest if we have to witness atrocious results like that.

I'm a little bit scared even of N64 beating SNES- not really scared, since the favorite Nintendo console polls are very decisive, but N64 with an OOT/SM64 pic just looks powerful.

I don't see the big issue with using Board 8 to make the bracket. Send invites to 10 or so of the Stats Topic veterans to some private Board. They are ineligible for a prize entry and threaten a usermap axe if they leak any info before the bracket goes public. Have them officially register as consultants with a $0 pay or something to make them official employees.
The worst part about this contest is that there was a lot of room for improvement even in just bracket placement. Move Squall out of that division, give X and the lower NNers some debateable matches. Give us Mario/Cloud and Samus/Snake. BAM, classic contest.

There's a lot of fun stuff (for me, anyway) we can enjoy in a well-made Systems Contest bracket. I'm confident the SNES would murder everything, so the best bracket will have a top half filled with sacrifices to the SNES and a bottom half loaded with the N64, PS2, PS1, and NES. The PS2 and PS1 can have an awesome semifinal match, but not before they prove themselves by beating the N64 and NES, respectively. There's also the question of how Nintendo's handhelds will perform (DS vs 360) and how new consoles will fare against the oldies (360 vs Genesis). The big four console makers should occupy at least 20 of the 32 spots, meaning we won't have too many spots filled with fodder like Atari's consoles and Turbografx and stuff.
Nintendo: 10-11 (5 consoles and 4 guaranteed handhelds; Game Boy Color and Virtual Boy probably make it) Sega - 5 (I'm guessing the Game Gear and Master System both make it) Sony - 5 (Guessing Vita makes it) Microsoft - 2
That doesn't leave too much space for barely-known garbage, and most of it can be placed in decent R1 spots.

From: PartOfYourWorld | #094 That doesn't leave too much space for barely-known garbage, and most of it can be placed in decent R1 spots.
So we get a lot of well known garbage instead. Everything from Sega will be weak. Most handhelds will be weak. Over half of the bracket will be crap one way or the other. There aren't more than 10 systems that would actually be worth seeing in contest matches.
You're also assuming that such a bracket would actually give you those things.
And that those matches will actually be entertaining.
Both of which I very much doubt. The Series Contest had its fill of "debatable" matches, too, because we didn't know what to expect from it. The matches themselves were still dull as could be and not very fun.
Honestly, I can't imagine a Systems Contest not being filled with a bunch of boring blowouts like the Series Contest and the Rivalry Rumble, other than maybe a few "interesting" matches.
(360 kills the DS and the Genesis, by the way. It's not even close)

For a contest of 32 that should last no more than a month, I don't think that's even bad. Villains had about half that number, as did the series contest honestly. Those weren't good contests, but this one can be better and represents a medium that we've never touched in ten years of these contests. If Bacon wants a brand new experimental contest, this would have been the way to go. It would have been better than Rivalry Rumble, surely.

Seriously, find a single system poll where a handheld does even remotely respectably. This site likes handhelds for Pokemon and little else.
(I know some people are going to go "LOL POTD" but this site actually likes the 360 and are pretty nonplussed toward handhelds, despite high rates of ownership. If you want to talk DS vs. the original Xbox, then you might have something. Regardless, I doubt either match is close or entertaining)
but this one can be better and represents a medium that we've never touched in ten years of this contest.
There are lots of media we've never touched in ten years of contests, and for good reason.
Console Contest can stay there.
