NES SNES N64 GC Wii PS PS2 PS3 Xbox 360 Genesis Dreamcast GBC GBA DS PSP
16 entrants, all we need. I wanted to throw N-Gage against SNES in round 1 to see if we can beat LoZ's record against Adventure, but it doesn't look like there's any room in a 16-entrant bracket.

Congratulations to SuperNiceDog, Guru Winner, who was smart enough to pick your 7 time champion, Link.
I might take the DS to beat the Wii in a contest setting. Same with the 360 and PS3. The DS is unanimously liked and considered a failure by no one. In a console gen where Nintendo went casual, Sony lost the Playstation luster, and Microsoft is still an American console maker with ownership % well behind everyone else, the DS was the only constant that didn't disappoint. It could be the second strongest system since 2000.

Yes, I know the folly of using GOTY stuff to predict contest matches, but when the gap is THAT large? You can't even blame the Wii for the DS's poor performance because the two of them combined still get doubled by the PS3!

I think voters will enter a systems contest with a completely different mentality. Those System of the Year polls obviously favor consoles because we're all that fanboyish and gotta rep the big systems. In a 1v1 contest where the Wii isn't tethered to the 360/PS3 and DS isn't tethered to PSP, we could see some markedly different results. I'd take the original fat ugly Game Boy over any of today's powerhouses in a 1v1 match. I might not necessarily do the same with the DS, but I'd give it fair consideration.

From: LeonhartFour | #111 I honestly think most people approach System of the Year with "What is my favorite console?" I know I do.
I agree, but they wouldn't (and couldn't) approach it that way in a 1v1 poll between a console and a handheld, which should greatly benefit the handheld.

Yes, it would prevent it from getting tripled like it does in GOTY polls.
Still wouldn't get anywhere close to winning.

"Why must we always choose between certain death and SuperNiceDog?" "I'm in an epic battle to the death, FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF!"
Once again, I disagree. I think the DS would have a real shot at everything released after the PS2.
GameCube Wii Xbox Xbox 360 PS3
I'd never take the original Xbox to win, and I might not take any of the others. The GameCube might have its number, but I'd be confident in DS doing very well against the three new consoles.

Is there anything the DS has ever put out that can even come close to the best the big three have put out?
Honestly, if the DS can't put out one strong game, then I have a hard time believing it can hang with the big boys. It just falls into the "Yeah, we own it and we like it, but we don't love it."

It's not all about individual game strength. The N64's five strongest games probably beat the SNES's, but that console match could be as ugly as a doubling. I think the DS will shine because it had a solid library, high ownership rate, and didn't disappoint anyone. It was the breakaway star of this console generation for casuals and hardcore alike. Twilight Princess and Brawl would destroy any individual DS game, but taking account the systems as a whole, the DS should do much, much better than its games.

No, it's not about individual game strength, but it is about the gaming library. Something out there has to evoke strong feelings in DS owners for it to be strong, and what are those games that do it? Based on what we've seen, there aren't really any DS games people feel all that strongly about, and that's a problem.
And if none of those games exist, I have a hard time seeing the DS hang with any big console. It's the same problem the Wii faces. It only has a handful of strong games, and most of them were released a couple years ago, at least. That's why I think it'd lose to the PS3 or the 360. Heck, the original Game Boy has that problem. What games other than R/B/Y and Tetris do people care about?
I mean, why do we think the SNES, N64, PS1, or PS2 would do so well? Because they've put out a large number of popular games that have done well in these contests. They have lots of games that resonate with people and evoke strong feelings. "A bunch of pretty neat games that we kinda like" isn't going to cut it for the DS. I mean, what is the DS's marquee title? Pokemon Black/White? New Super Mario Bros. DS? Mario Kart DS?

I was thinking that maybe something we could do during the offseason would be to do "Contest History Lessons," reviewing old contests and reminiscing about "the good old days." Remembering what we debated about, the big shockers, the highlights, and all that good jazz.
That could be fun.

This is what SuperNiceDog did to me in the Guru: http://i43.tinypic.com/dgwh0.gif http://www.majhost.com/gallery/atukam/OHWD/snownd.gif
SNES > N64 > PS1 > PS2 > 360 > NES > PS3 > GC > GB > DS > GBA > Genesis >Xbox > Dreamcast There isn't much anyone can say that will convince me otherwise.

Game of the decade? More like Guru of the decade mirite? However, the Guru of the next decade so far is SuperNiceDog
N64 > SNES would be a really sad day, and a good signal to leave the site (if this last contest wasn't enough). My gut feeling is that SNES may have some trouble getting the 60/40 in a direct 1v1 poll, even if it can still double or worse N64 in a favorite Nintendo console poll.

We'd consider the N64 an underdog against both the PS1 and PS2, but it could win. Nintendo has managed inexplicable wins against Sony/Square in the past few years. Majora beat FFX. There's nothing crazier about the N64 beating either big Sony console.

Well, I thought the numnbers were interesting! Here's a few things I note:
- The GameCube is an absolute beast here relative to the rest of the world. It's the Nintendo home console more of this site has owned than any other (doubt many would've guessed that!). Worldwide it was outsold 7:1 by the PS2, for reference. - The PSP, despite being a live system at the time of the poll, and having sold over 70m worldwide, has been owned by 6% more than the Genesis. - The 3DS will probably start overtaking systems within a year. - The PS1 and the N64 have very solid ownership rates, almost equal with the DS. Not hard to see why that generation dominates games contests. - The PS2's percentage is crazy. - More people on this site have owned a Wii than a SNES. - But more people on this site have owned a NES than either the PS3 or the 360.

Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who.
Well for the pics, I'm sure Ulti will stick, he won't be the only one who'll make 90% of the contest pics. I'll join him as well! I was too late to awake for this contest. Even though everyone hated all my pics except this: http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=14&pos=74 And this (was my 1st pic ever created) Still, I'll try to make a decent pic for almost every match.
