They were afraid girls would be scared off from any movie with the word "Mars" in the title.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/andrew-stanton-explains-john-carter-name-change-says-girls-wont-see-a-movie-with-mars-in-the-title

That's absolutely hilarious. There's also some belief that "Mars Needs Moms" killed off any interest in "Mars" in movie titles for the next few years. The minds of Hollywood producers must be fascinating.

Bucky O'Hare flopping is the reason we never got an animated version of Space Usagi. Which, on the one hand, is a shame because Usagi Yojimbo kicks ass, and Space Usagi was amazing. But on the other hand, the short animated promo for SU was bloody awful, so maybe it was a mercy killing.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit doesn't have a question mark in the title because Hollywood producers believed that question marks cursed movies' performances.

Yeah

That sounds like something they would do.

they are probably right about this one. girls are not gonna be first in line to see a movie with mars in the title. but the previews will probably scare them away anyway.

"Keep in mind that Pixar, the studio where Stanton wrote and directed "Finding Nemo" and "WALL-E" (and where he serves as part of the secretive, highly influential Brain Trust), has been loudly criticized for its perceived lack of interest in telling stories with strong female characters (or really, any female characters at all)."

So...
Jessi doesn't count because she's a toy.
Dory doesn't count because she's a fish.
EVE doesn't count because she's a robot. (and robots can't be strong, apparently.)
Ellie Fredricksen doesn't count because she DIES! (and thus, doesn't affect the story at all, right?)

I find this part of the article particularly laughable.

Wouldn't Princess of Mars have balanced out? Or would absolutely no one want to see that?

Movies with Mars in the title are pretty universally bombs. Mars Needs Moms, Mission to Mars, Mars Attacks, Ghosts of Mars, all failures for the most part. (Mission to Mars made a little money, but everyone kinda hated it)

Veronica Mars was a fairly successful TV series.....then again Life on Mars didn't fair so well.

I think Princess of Mars would be a double whammy on the bad. Guys avoid it cause of princess, girls avoid it cause of mars, and only die hard john carter fans go to see it.

Really, I wouldn't put any thought into a title of a movie, but it's actually a very true thing. They do plenty of studies to know what movie titles to avoid. I can't believe it sometimes, then I talk to people, and it makes sense.

Princess of Mars was already made. By the Asylum. Starring Traci Lords.

Princess of Mars is the book it's based on. This new one by disney is based on the same book. I think it's in public domain now, so anyone can make a movie on it.

Pixar is still sexist, news at 11.

I think it's kind-of absurd to say that girls wouldn't see a movie with "Mars" in the title. Although...I guess I technically have never seen a movie with Mars in the title, but it's not like there's a whole lot of them, or that someone tried to take me to a movie and I was like "Sure, sounds like fun. Oh...wait, the movie has Mars in the title? No, I changed my mind."

In fact...amount that the three titles appeal to me...

Princess of Mars > John Carter of Mars > John Carter

I don't know what Pixar being sexist has to do with this movie, aside from Andrew Stanton being the director. This isn't a Pixar movie.

Thinking they're right on this one. Princess of Mars alienates both genders, John Carter of Mars alienates girls. Just John Carter doesn't sound as appealing, but it at least alienates no one.

"John Carter" sounds like it's about a lawyer discovering corruption in his firm and being conflicted about whether or not to expose it.

They're right that girls wouldn't want to see a movie with "Mars" in the title, pretty obvious.

And guys wouldn't either. Because movies with Mars in the title are always bad.

I'm not sure having "Mars" in the title would alienate girls that much. Girls seem much more willing to see a "guy" movie than vice versa.

Ehhh, I can see the reasoning with this one at least. "John Carter" could be anything- "John Carter From Mars" makes it sound like a sci fi flick that girls would avoid.

"John Carter" makes it sound like some kind of political documentary. If you asked me if I wanted to see a movie called "John Carter", I'd say "no." If you asked me if I wanted to see "John Carter of Mars" or "Princess of Mars", I'd say "tell me more." I can't be the only one.
