Artificial.

Real trees aren't worth the hassle, and they look worse than artificial trees when decorated anyway.

Artificial.

Almost impossible to get a real tree up here (I live in an apartment), and I think it's illegal too.

Though there are no kids around so I haven't bothered to put it up yet.

No Christmas tree.

Christmas has become very unceremonious in my family across the last few years. It's still celebrated, but without the tree.

Real. If you aren't allergic and have a fake tree, you are a monster.

But I don't want to deal with Christmas tree shopping (every year, I mean), trying to move it around, pine needles, preventing it from catching fire from lights (or does that happen anymore with modern lights?), and disposing of it!

It's much easier to just take my prelit tree out of its closet and shove it back in when I'm done with it!

And no, no worries about the tree catching fire. Nobody I know has ever had that happen.

Real tree is the only way to go. In fact in 2006, I had TWO real trees! We put one up the day after Thanksgiving (the first day I consider it acceptable to put up a tree, and anyway I'm not sure any lots are ever open before then), and by Christmas Eve it was dried out so we took it down and then went out and snagged another that stayed up for another month. Two months of REAL Christmas trees! It was a lot of work taking a tree down AND putting another up in the same day though. I'm not about to do that again.

Also in 2007 we didn't have one because we had a puppy who we didn't trust to not tear it down, and in 2008 we got one just to see how he'd react, but we didn't put any decorations up for fear he'd break em. And last year we didn't have one because we didn't make it out to get one when we originally planned and then it was too late. I think it would be good to have an artificial to keep in storage that we could put up in emergency situations like that.

BTW am I crazy or did they stop selling good Christmas lights sometime in the 1970s? The ones I see are always steady-burning. There's almost never any twinkling lights, and whatever ones there are always twinkle big sections of lights (like 1/2 the entire string) off and on together. Or even worse, these "twinkling" mini-lights I got recently where the green ones flash at near-strobe speeds, while all the other colors are steady-burning. What the **** good is that? The only really good lights I've ever seen are these three strings of C7 lights my parents bought sometime in the 60s or 70s where each bulb twinkles independently and at varying intervals. They're seriously amazing. The tree looks beautiful and the patterns of light and shadow it creates on the ceiling above the tree is fantastic.

Artificial. The only thing I miss about real trees is the smell - there's just too much work involved with getting/setting up a real one (and cleaning up those needles can be a pain in more ways than one) and I kinda feel like it's a waste to chop down a tree just for decoration.

By the way, I'm totally not a hippie. I think.

One thing I do miss about my tree from '09 is the stand I had. It was the custom-made stand of the lot I went to. It had three legs about 18 inches long made out of steel rebar, connected to a metal disk with a spike in the center. It was very sturdy; I stood on it with each foot on a leg and bounced up and down and it held me up fine so I'm sure it could support just about any weight of tree you could buy. Then you put this big plastic bucket on over it (the bucket had a hole in the bottom for the spike to go through, and rubber washer to make the seal watertight). They had a drilling apparatus at the lot, and when you bought the tree they drilled a hole in the bottom, and that's where you inserted the spike. So it was REALLY easy to do, much better than a normal stand where you need two people to get it in right and screw the bolts in. It was also really easy to get the lights strung because instead of having to circle around the tree myself, I was able to stand in one place and spin the tree on the spike. That probably wasn't the best idea, as pine is a very soft wood and fresh-cut pine even more so, and spinning it like that could easily have damaged the hole and potentially caused the tree to fall over. Nothing bad ended up happening though so in the end I guess it was okay.

Unfortunately that one lot is the ONLY place where they have the drilling apparatus you need to make the trees fit the stand, and I moved away the next year so I can't use this stand anymore and had to buy a lame-ass PLASTIC stand at Home Depot. Ugh.

Actually since trees are short term carbon cycle it isn't really a waste at all (especially since balsam wood isn't used for like... anything). They'll just get regrown on the Christmas tree farms (or in the forest), so the only part of the tradition that's bad for the environment is the transportation of the tree, which really isn't that bad at all

Artificial tree is what I bought last year, and I'm satisfied with it. Not a big Christmas guy, and the clean-up and hassle of a real tree isn't worth it to me.

Also, got this fake tree for $10. Find me a real tree for that price.
