The Wii has as console exclusives arguably the two most popular series and maybe even as high as 3 of the top 4 actual console series on this site. Not to mention it had maybe the most-looked forward to game ever. Well-loved series' tend to lead to people owning the only console one can play said series on.
Just a few days before GotY voting begins, I'm wondering if anyone here would seriously consider taking Skyrim over Brawl or Twilight Princess in a match.

Not yet. Skyward Sword might just be a weak entrant, honestly, especially considering this site abandoned the Wii a couple years ago.
Relatively speaking, that is. It could be an ME2/Galaxy 2 situation.

At the very most, Skyrim will not be stronger than Fallout 3 in a contest, and it already lost to Brawl in GOTD.
I assume Skyward Sword will at least be above the fodder line in a general games contest. Regardless of what you think about Skyward Sword's strength, it's still a console Zelda game, which really makes a big difference in the strength of a Zelda game. The portable Zeldas are weak and would be thrashed in a contest (except for Link's Awakening).
Being from the most popular series on this site along with being on a console will at least assure every console Zelda game will be automatically granted enough strength that it becomes very likely it will be above the fodder line.

Why is it impossible for Skyrim to be stronger than Fallout 3? Skyrim seems bigger right now than Fallout 3 ever was. I wouldn't feel 100% comfortable taking anything other than OoT and FFVII over it, right at this moment. The TP/FFX/MM/Brawl/Melee tier of entrants are strong, but not invincible beasts. Remember that Brawl/MGS4 GOTY poll? Brawl won, but barely, and Skyrim's closer to its peak right now than MGS4 was then.

Skyrim also seems to be closer to this game's tastes than Fallout 3, as I think the site generally prefers fantasy settings (at least I do). Not sure why it has to be weaker.
-- SuperNiceDog owned me in the Guru. Or do I have to stop using the word "owned" in order to not offend black people due to slavery?
Skyrim should grow to be the strongest Western game of all throughout the next year. It may in fact hold that distinction now, but I'd still feel uneasy taking any Western game (including it) over the established Japanese elites. Pre-Skyrim, the strongest Western game was either Fallout 3, Oblivion, Portal, or Mass Effect 2, and there are a half dozen Zeldas alone that would take any of them. The site is just crazy for the older stuff from glorious nippon. Only one time has a Western game - Starcraft - truly broken through, and it got totally b****ed by FFVIII for payback.

I never said it wasn't impossible for that to happen. I'm always a little wary towards picking recently released games over established games that have been tested in a contest format already.

I get the vibe that Skyrim isn't stronger than Fallout 3 yet, but will have potential to grow with time to the point where it'll be the strongest Western game. I think by the time the next contest rolls around, Skyrim could beat WW and score 48% on TP.
Then again, I'm usually wrong about these things.

Congrats to SuperNiceDog for winning the Guru for a Super Bad Contest!
Fallout 3 got pretty close to Brawl. If Skyrim is stronger........does that mean it can hang with MM and FFX? That would really be something. Of course, if it can beat SS, then it should be in that range, so perhaps it isn't so strange.

Congratulations to SuperNiceDog, Guru Winner, who was smart enough to pick your 7 time champion, Link.
Fallout 3 had some wonky matches at the end. A game that scores almost 46% on Brawl should manage more than 52% on Metroid Prime. I think Oblivion would give F3 a pretty respectable fight, and Wind Waker (a game that would be quite lucky to be the #5 Zelda) gave Oblivion an easy 56% beating. IMO, Fallout's final ranking is inflated, and Skyrim would have to be a good deal stronger just to hang with Zelda titles in that 3-5 range.

I suspect Skyrim and ME2 (maybe ME3, too) will pass FO3. FO3 was basically restarting a niche series, whereas Skyrim and ME2 already had a good establishment for their fanbases and the directions they wanted to go. Skyrim also has a good shot at winning GotY here like ME2 did, which is something FO3 failed to do. Not that established sequels or GotY-awards always decide what are the strongest games here (hello, CoD:MW2), but FO3 seems like it's helped open the doors for other WRPGs to become more successful -- like Oblivion and SW:KotOR before it.
It'll remain a milestone-game, but it's not unbeatable in its genre. Whether you consider the chances it was over-rated against SSBB, Skyrim meeting the hype in a very competitive holiday season as its front-runner, and/or the chance ME2 boosts after ME3 anything like how ME1 did after ME2...eh, I think FO3 could lose those match-ups now or in the near future.

Skyrim the strongest Western game losing by at least 10 old japanese games.Makes sense.

GameFaqs is NOT the place to go for relationship advice.Nobody here gets any action unless it is their right or left hand.Including me.~Dawn and Dusk~
The big flaw with arguing GotY awards for ME2/Skyrim > FO3 is that if the Wii doesn't completely die off Skyrim and Mass Effect 2 get dominated by Skyward Sword and Galaxy 2, with maybe Mass Effect 2 able to make it close to Galaxy 2. Mass Effect 2 didn't even exactly light the world on fire against a game that was about as hyped here as Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
One feather in ME2's cap is the performance of the original Mass Effect in an actual 1v1 games contest. It delighted fans and surprised critics by scoring 46% on Portal, which went on to prove its own worth by scoring almost 45% on RE4. Among B8ers, ME2 is unanimously considered to be a stronger contest force than the original, and it doesn't need to be that much stronger to threaten or beat Portal. If it beats Portal, then it starts falling in the range where it would give RE4 a good showing.
Unfortunately, I think ME2 missed its best time to excel. Whether the upcoming ME3 is a gem, a dud, or anything in between, I think it'll probably end up siphoning some of 2's popularity. I just have a feeling that new, rapid-fire, direct sequels in series with an ongoing plot might work that way. For example, I wouldn't expect Skyrim to negatively affect Oblivion's popularity, but I think Uncharted 3 may indeed do that to Uncharted 2.
EDIT: Does anyone else think this unsubstantiated theory could hold some water, or am I on crazy street here?

I feel like rapid-fire sequels run the risk of getting a CoD/Madden perception. If ME3 is a dud or even just ok, it wouldn't surprise me to see a big drop for ME2. Maybe if ME3 outshines ME2 massively it could siphon some of the other's popularity, but on a site like this old beats new pretty easily, and I'd expect ME3 to help ME2 more than hurt.
Although quite frankly if the Rivalry Rumble really was an extension of games/series, that's a really bad sign for damn near everything recent.
I knew they existed, because this isn't the first time that "Windows Phone" has been in a GameFAQs poll.
But, I'm still not sure what we'll get for tomorrow's poll. It will be an original poll idea, although I'm probably expecting a new idea for a "Got Console?" poll that has never been used before. Something like "Got iPod Touch/iPad?" might even be possible.
-- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as SuperNiceDog, Guru Champ!
Last year the poll on New Year's Day was "Best DS Game". Perhaps he'll replace that with "Best 3DS/DS Game?" I don't think anyone wants to sit through Pokemon Black/White blowing out the likes of Okamiden, Dragon Quest VI and Radiant Historia in a Best DS Game poll, but seeing it up against OoT3D, SM3DL and MK7 could be interesting.

Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who.
We had a best PS3 game poll for 2006, even though the PS3 had only been out for less than 2 months prior to that poll. Granted, that poll was total trash and only had 5 games. The 3DS has the advantage of being released during the early part of this year and there are definitely enough 3DS games to make a poll that has more than 6 games in it.

GameFAQs console ownership rates as of the end of 2011:
Wii: 69.03% PS3: 63.28% X360: 58.67% 3DS: 33.55%
Pretty complete turn around from the PS3 against the 360. With the Wii more or less static at this point (on GameFAQs), it wouldn't shock me if the PS3 was able to get very close to it over the next couple of years. Other point to note is the strong start by the 3DS, and with continued momentum and games for series GameFAQs likes coming out (Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts, Paper Mario...) throughout the next year it should climb quickly.

Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who.
I don't think ME2 will be that much affected by ME3. People will still have fond memories of ME2, no matter how good/bad ME3 is.
And I'd pick ME2 over Galaxy 2 in an actual match, but that's more because I don't have much faith in Galaxy 2's strength. It's a game I'm sure people love, but I don't think it's a game people are passionate enough about to vote for.

Congrats to SuperNiceDog for winning the Guru for a Super Bad Contest!
I've probably said it many times before, but I personally think that Fallout 3 and Metroid Prime were both receiving "artificial" boosts from those franchises having releases right before GOTD, so Half-Life 2 could beat them both now, especially now with Valve being more relevant than in 2010.
Although Fallout 3 > Metroid Prime > Half-Life 2 makes the most sense anyway.
And I thought that Metroid Prime > Oblivion was certain - Oblivion did worse against Wind Waker than Metroid Prime did, and the latter has more reason to be SFFd (unless you think Legend of Zelda and Elder Scrolls share a "casual RPG fanbase" of sorts).
I'm really looking forward to seeing how Skyrim does in the GotY polls. Obviously it won't mean as much as if it was a true contest, but if it can easily beat Skyward Sword again after both are out (like another 60-40), I'd feel safe saying its the strongest Western game. Even in GotY polls, I couldn't see any of the other Western games demolishing a main line Zelda game like that.
No mainline-LoZ game has ever lost GotY here before, so a victory over LoZ:SS at all will be impressive...and the hype-polls suggest it could be an easy beat-down, too. Time will tell, of course, but the winner of a year this stacked and varied should be quite strong anyway. We not only get deja vu from 2009's best games...
--> CoD:MW3, second sequel to 2009's GotY --> Uncharted 3, sequel to 2009's runner-up --> Batman: Arkham City, sequel to B:AA which arguably could've been 2009's runner-up --> Dragon Age 2, sequel to 2009's #3 game --> Assassin's Creed: Revelations, second sequel to AC2 which arguably could've been 2009's #3 game
...we also have three unrelated front-runners:
--> Portal 2, following the still-growing original --> LoZ:SS, another mainline-LoZ game that sold tons despite Wii-hate --> Skyrim, which has taken The Elder Scrolls to another level
I think all of them except DA2 were well-received, so whatever survives will command some respect.

FateStayAlbion | Posted 12/31/2011 1:49:33 PM | message detail | quote I'm really looking forward to seeing how Skyrim does in the GotY polls.
If we do 3 days of Multi-Platform polls, like we had for the GotY 2010 polls, Skyrim could possibly get above 30% in the Multi-Platform poll. Even Fallout 3 couldn't manage 30% here:
Skyrim will probably be in Day 2 of the Multi-Platform polls, but it's very unlikely it will get above 30% in the final Multi-Platform poll, like this poll we had for GotY 2010:
